Pasadena Tournament of Roses Golden Jubilee, 1889 - 1939

This magazine gives the history of the Pasadena Tournament of Roses, the Rose Parade, held every New Year's Day, from its conception in 1889 to 1939. One of the first floats is shown on page one. Some of the prize winners from each year, beginning in 1927, are shown in color, one to a page. Although Shirley Temple was the Grand Marshal of the parade in 1939, she is not mentioned or pictured in this magazine.

The inside front cover advertises Tanner Motor Livery, showing the Gray Line Sightseeing tour bus, a limousine to be driven with a chauffeur, and the latest model (1939) U-Drive Cars. Inside back cover advertises Heine's Tobacco, and the outside back cover has a full page ad for Sunkist orange juice.

The magazine, 8-3/4 x 11-3/4 inches, with about 32 pages, comes in its own envelope, unsent. The magazine has only a slightly bent upper corner, and is in very good shape. The envelope has darkened along the edges, and along the glued areas, and has a crinkled flap.

In the Hall of Columns of our nation's Capitol stands the heroic figure of one of Iowa's greatest statesmen: James Harlan of Mount Pleasant. Chosen with Samuel J. Kirkwood to represent the Hawkeye State in Statuary Hall, Harlan richly merited this honor.

Not only had he served Iowa in the U.S. Senate for sixteen years, but he had been Abraham Lincoln's choice for Secretary of the Interior. For constructive ability, for capacity of leadership, for sincere statesmanship, James Harlan had few equals among his contemporaries.

Harlan, like Lincoln, had been born in a log cabin in Illinois. He served as president of Iowa Wesleyan College in Mount Pleasant (the oldest institution of higher learning in continuous operation in Iowa). His daughter was married in 1868 to Robert Todd Lincoln, the only living son of Abraham Lincoln, and their marriage produced Abraham (Jack) Lincoln in 1873 -- the only namesake for the assassinated president.

This March, 1960 issue of The Palimpsest magazine, published by the State Historical Society of Iowa, includes three features on James Harlan, his friendship with Lincoln, and the Harlan Home, which was restored in the 1960s as an important Iowa historic site.

The articles were written by J. Raymond Chadwick and William J. Petersen. There's a lot of fascinating information here!

Cooking for One

by Norah Mannion Wilmot

Uncomplicated Scalloped Oysters; Gingery Legs and Thighs; Cloud 9 Rolls; German Apple Cakes; this is the kind of food that makes Cooking for One a joy. And joie de vivre is one of the reasons why the first edition of this charming cookbook sold out immediately when first published by Norah Mannion Wilmot.

The author was 85, but there is nothing old-fashioned about her approach to cooking for one -- just the kind of good-humoured, no-fuss advice that only someone who enjoys her own cooking can give. And there are enough time- and food-saving hints in the book to make a cook out of anyone.

Published by Douglas & McIntyre/ Vancouver and Madrona Publishers/Seattle, 7th printing, 1980. Soft cover, 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 inches, 64 pages. Slight wear to corners, and not completely flat, but nevertheless in clean and unmarked condition.
