I've had this ambro around for years but have never quite been able to decipher the information contained within so it's time to pass it on to someone else.

Inside the case is a paper which reads on one side: Anise? Ann? Carter of Washington Dreur-Gover? of the Anderson Bay Presented him with his picture.

On the other side it reads: Quin? Anz? Picture taken at Washington.

The paper is a lined tablet page and the writing is in faded ink.

Ambro is of a very striking young man probably about 20 years old with bright blue eyes and is hand tinted. Young man is wearing a woolen sweater and what appears to be a heavy woolen waistcoat.

Approximately 1860-not a soldier.

Case is in expected condition for the period with rubs on the paper corners and a repaired hinge. about 2 3/4 inches x 2 3/8 inches.

Our research/resource indicates due to the SMALL SIZE, CHOCOLATE COLORING, and CASUAL BACKGROUND that this PHOTOGRAPH is a considered to be a GEM TINTYPE / FEROTYPE and dates between 1870 and 1885.

It is surrounded by a BEAUTIFUL COPPER or BRASS Ferotype preserver. The preserver has a FLORAL DESIGN in all 4 CORNERS and a ROPE DESIGN all along the edge.

A BIT of HISTORICAL INFORMATION:

The form of tintype (also referred to as ferotype or sometimes melainotype) known as a "gem" is a small photographic image usually anywhere from 3/4" to 1" wide and 1¼" high made possible by the use of a multi-lens camera with repeating back which therefore could produce multiple exposures on a single photographic plate.

In terms of quantity, the gem was the most prolifically produced form of photograph in the 1860s in America. Aside from the speed of its production, the gem was also inexpensive and its small size made it suitable for mounting in jewellery such as lockets and broaches.

Like daguerreotypes and ambrotypes before it, hand colouring was also possible and rouging of the subject's cheeks was the most common form of this.

The ferotype, also called the melainotype or tintype, was America's first major contribution to the art of photography. It superceeded the ambrotype by the end of the Civil War and went on to become 19th-Century America's favorite quick picture. It was made the same way as the ambrotype, except that a thin piece of black enameled, or japanned, iron was used in place of glass. Like the ambrotype, the image is reversed. Ferotypes were made from THUMBNAIL SIZE to as large as 11 x 14. With the introduction of multilensed cameras with sliding backs in the early 1860's, the more typical small sizes were made in volume. These were usually mounted in card mounts of the then popular cart-de-vista size. Made on a metal plate and with a varnished surface, ferotypes have proven very durable.

The CONDITION of this listing is ANTIQUE / USED. It is slightly faded. The COPPER / BRASS MATT is in wonderful condition for its age.

This photograph was found in the SHAKER SEWING CASE that we sold on a separate listing.

ANTIQUE LATE 1800s CABINET CARD SMALL CH $20.00

This is an interesting LARGE ANTIQUE CABINET CARD of a PORTRAIT of a WOMAN (unknown). Her dress is VICTORIAN ERA, high neckline, trimmed in lace. It appears that she is wearing a necklace made of coins. Her hair is curled and in a bun on top of her head. Her hair is adorned with an ornament that also looks like a string of coins (under magnification).

The PHOTOGRAPH carries the STUDIO MARK of HESLER & PEABODY of 96 STATE STREET in CHICAGO, ILLINOIS. The mark also makes reference to the WORLDS FAIR of 1853 and WORLDS FAIR of 1876 and notes the addresses: 92-98 STATE and

49-55 WASHINGTON STREETS.

Our research indicates that the PHOTOGRAPHER named HESLER is in fact ALEXANDER HESLER who is known for his photography of PRESIDENT ABRAHAM LINCOLN.

The CONDITION of the PHOTOGRAPH is VERY GOOD. The IMAGE shows light fading/yellowing and handling marks.

Some edges are slightly worn. The PHOTOGRAPH has slightly curved edges and is almost the same size as the card.  This is a LARGE SIZE CABINET CARD of a WOMAN who is STANDING by a CHAIR and HOLDING a BOOK. By her feet there appears to be a NOTE that she has dropped on the floor. There is a faint view of a warming pan next to her.

A PLUS to this listing is the BLUE STAMP that is affixed to the back of the CARD. The STAMP is a COMMEMORATIVE STAMP that was issued in 1893-1894 and is part of the COLUMBIAN STAMP SERIES called COLUMBUS IN SIGHT OF LAND (scott 230). The picture on the stamp was taken from a painting by W.H. POWELL.

The CONDITION of the PHOTOGRAPH is FAIR/POOR. The image is still very clear but there is alot of age residue and staining. There is pen/pencil writing/drawing/scribbling on the back apparently done by a child. There is some wear to the edges.

The CONDITION of the BLUE STAMP is FAIR. It is affixed to the back of the card. The PRINTING is OFF CENTER. There is a small portion on the left side of the STAMP that is missing. The STAMP has some staining.

An antique AMBROTYPE is also known as a COLLODION photo. They are a fairly rare find in the year 2004. This photography process was used from the period of 1850 until about 1860.

This process involved using a glass negative and was short lived. In 1852 the method used was to make the negative into a positive. The photographer would bleach the negative and then frame it using a black fabric behind the glass or by using black varnish on the back of the glass plate.

These COLLODION portraits were less expensive than the earlier DAGUERREOTYPES. However their life expectancy was quite short due to the fragile nature of glass.

This portrait of a somber looking couple almost didn't make it through these 150 years. As you can see from the gallery photos it has 2 cracks in the glass. However, the frame and 'album' covering managed to keep the pieces of glass together. The frame is very ornate and made of metal which might be copper. The frame looks as if someone who did not know what they were doing has tried to clean the metal and there are many scratches on the glass photo. At one time this minature 'album' had a cover or another photo which was held together with a hook latch. You can still see the hole where the latch should be.

I would love to know the story of this couple. Were they brother and sister or much more likely husband and wife? And whatever happened to them??
