What a rich cast of characters in this town band in Victorian England. C.1900. Love their instruments proudly stacked like rifles in front. Most of the men are wearing the same caps. Classic mustaches. Cigars. Walking sticks. They are in a field outside their town which can be seen in the background. Size: 5 x 7. Image condition is excellent. Card mount is also very good with just modest soiling and edge wear.

SALE PRICE $50

WAS $65  This delightful image has two nicely dressed young men and a pretty girl sitting on the steps of a Victorian house. Each of them has a cat in their lap. They are obviously having fun. Just behind them is a beautiful Victorian screen door with fancy woodwork.

Size: including mount 5 1/4 x 6 1/4.

The photo itself is 3 3/4 x 4 3/4.

Condition of photo and mount are excellent. The photo appears to have a few modest blemishes from the developing. Card mount has just modest edge wear.

SALE: ORIG $55 NOW $45  C.1910. A great look at a Victorian beach moment. Don’t you wonder what they were thinking. Mom and dad don’t look particularly lighthearted, but maybe the little girl is having some fun, though we hope she doesn’t get her shoes wet. We wonder what the photographer was wearing.

Photographer: Stober, Borkum, Kohlers Strandhotel. A Google search shows that Borkum is in Germany and is an island resort in the North Sea. Size 4 1/4 x 6 1/2.

Condition of both the image and card are very good. There is just some paper loss on the top left corner of the mount, but it doesn’t touch the photo. The image looks slightly faded. This must have spent most of its life in an album.

SALE: ORIG $55 NOW $45  C.1880. Outstanding image of a policeman from Gloucester, Massachusetts. His badge appears to say “SPECIAL POLICE, GLOUCESTER.” I’m not sure what the “Special” denotes. I can’t quite make out the badge on his hat. A very human portrait of this old fellow in his humble uniform. Nice watch fob and chain. Photographer: Adams, 192 Main St., Gloucester, Mass. Size 4 1/4 x 6 1/2. Condition of both the image and card are very good. There is some modest soiling, but the edges show almost no wear. This must have spent most of its life in an album.

C.1890. I am not a guitar expert. Some quick search engine research turned up several harp guitars that looked similar, so I am assuming this is one, too. This fine image gives an excellent look at the guitar itself, as well as its proud owner. Photograper: Jurgens, St. Paul, Minn. Size 4 1/4 x 6 1/2. Condition of both the image and card near mint. This was obviously well protected in an album.

SALE PRICE $90

WAS $125  C.1890. A fine image of Chauncey Olcott, famous actor, singer and song writer from the turn of the century. This card is labeled "Mavourneen." Olcott wrote the words to "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling." He also wrote both the words and music to "My Wild Irish Rose."

Photographer: Donovan, New York. Size 4 1/4 x 6 1/2. Condition of both the image and card are excellent. Just light soiling and a very small dent to top left corner.

SALE: ORIG $55 NOW $45  C.1880. As clearly shown by this great image, mothers have always over bundled their kids… even for a studio photograph! The poor little guy on the left looks like he is about to pass out. Fantastic fur outfit on the little guy and gorgeous fur trim on the older child. These kids clearly came from a wealthy family. Nifty little sled, too. Photographer: J. H. Brown, Port Hope. It doesn’t specify where Port Hope is. Google search turned up towns in Canada and Michigan. Size 4 1/4 x 6 1/2. Condition of both the image and card near mint. Fine detail. This was obviously well protected in an album.

SALE: ORIG $75 NOW $50  C.1890. This is a wonderfully gritty image of a late 19th century railroad engineer. He has obviously just paused for a moment from his duties, because he is clearly in his soiled work clothes. His hand is moving slightly as if he is anxious to get back to his familiar world. The his watch chain shows well. Photographer ID is an imprint on back: Ben Biscombe, No. 69 South Poplar St., Hazleton, Pa. Size 4 1/4 x 6 1/2. Condition is excellent. Very slight fading and aging to mount. Very little wear. This photo was obviously well protected in an album.

CABINET PHOTO –CHAUNCEY OLCOTT-MAVOURNEE $45.00

CABINET PHOTO – BUNDLED UP KIDS AND SLED $50.00

This is a great little strip because it is more than just changes in expression. The girl also changes her outfit to include a bonnet and a parasol. Great curls. Size 3 1/2 x 6 3/4. No photographer ID. Condition excellent with just a few spots on the mat, not the photo.

Handsome image of what appears to be a cadet, possibly from West Point which is not that far from Sing Sing in New York state. His hat has a military badge but I can’t quite make it out. Photographer: Vanderbilt, Sing-Sing, N.Y. Size 4 1/4 x 6 1/2. Condition is near mint. Obviously was well protected in an album.

SALE PRICE $45

WAS $65  Nifty image of a substantial farmhouse in the late 19th century. The owner and his wife and dog are out in front by the gate. Peering out the window in what was probably the parlor is another man and woman. The house has a very pretty cupola on top. On the back is written “Residence of Frank Brooks, Halsey Valley, NY.” This is between Corning and Binghamton. Size is 4 1/4 x 5 1/4. No photographer ID. Condition is excellent with fine detail in this photo. The tan card mount has a little soiling, but no dents or bends.   Nice image of a cavalry trooper, probably in 1880-90 era, almost certainly from Fort Riley, home of the 7th Cavalry. The 7th Cavalry rode from Fort Riley to the Battle of the Little Big Horn.

Photographer: Pennell Photo, Junction City, Kansas. Size 4 1/4 x 6 1/2.

Condition is excellent...just some modest foxing. Obviously was well protected in an album.

CABINET PHOTO – BROOKS FARM, COUPLE, DOG $55.00

CABINET PHOTO – 7TH CAVALRY SOLDIER – 18 $65.00

Compelling image of a boy and his dog. The boy is wearing a large jacket and looks like a fine young man. His dog is sitting calmly on a chair next to him, though the dog is clearly focused on someone off camera.

Size 4 1/4 x 6 1/2. No photographer ID. At bottom of mount is a handwritten name, Hiram Stevens. Image quality is excellent and card mount has minimal wear. Obviously kept in an album.   CLICK IMAGE TO SEE ENTIRE PHOTOGRAPH. Extraoridinary image of what looks like a brigade of maids posing in formation with their brooms stacked at arms. They are all wearing fancy maid uniforms. Several are holding feather dusters. Photographer: Bilbrough, Dubuque (Iowa). Size is 4 1/4 x 6 1/2. The image is in very good condition. Edges of the card show some wear, but not bad. Great piece.  A fine image of a classic moment in English society at the turn of the century. Elegantly dressed men and women strolling the grounds of what looks to be a park. Parasols and top hats at every turn. It is identified on the back with a note that says “The Mayor of South Shields (J. Rhawson) Garden Party, August 1901.” This is not a posed photo. Possibly taken by an event photographer who would then sell his photos afterwards. Photographer: J. Downey & Sons, 17 & 19 Eldon St., South Shields which is on the River Tyne in Northeast England. Might be the River Tyne in the background. Size is 4 1/4 x 6 1/2. Condition of image is excellent. Card is near perfect, just some slight discoloration on the edges, but not in the photo.  It just has to be them. What a great father and son photo from around 1880. Great outfits and hats. The little boy is as proud as can be about having his picture taken with his father. No photographer identification. Condition is very good with just modest soiling. Image is nice and sharp.

Victorian Man with Bow Tie, from Johannesburg,s.a.r., good condition  Cabinet Card Victorian Young Woman, good condition ,photo taken in PA  A funny shot with these two trying to look natural. At first glance it seems to be sisters, but the child on the right has very short hair, so it is possible this could have been a sister-brother image. Photographer: Bangs, located in bustling metropolis of SLEEPY EYE, MINN.

CABINET PHOTO – CHILD JOCKEY-MISSISSIPP

Victorian Man with Bow Tie $9.00

Cabinet Card Victorian Young Woman $10.00

CABINET PHOTO – TWO KIDS BOWING-SHAKING $35.00

An interesting image of a drummer in uniform posing casually in the studio with his drum at his feet and the sticks in his hand. He is even wearing the drum strap. No hat visibile. Probably about 1900. Photographer: Vogt’s Studio, Lesterville & Menno, S.D. Size 3.5" x 5.25". Condition is very good. Image is slightly faded and there are a few modestly discolored areas on the mount. Something different for the musical or South Dakota collector.   This little lady is one of several little women who attained celebrity status in the 19th century. In this image, she is 18 years old, weighs 15 pounds and stands 21” tall. Photographer: Wendt, Photo Artist, Boonton, N.J. Size: 4.25” x 6.5” Condition of card and image are excellent. Very modest edge wear and a slight sepia tone. There is a tiny white letter “A” in bottom left area of image. Looks like it was part of negative, but not sure.   This is an extra tall cabinet card of a fine looking cadet in his uniform. He is holding his cap in his hand. Can’t see detail on the hat or buttons to identify the institution. Could be West Point. Photographer: Bachrach & Bros, Baltimore. Size 4” x 8”. Condition is excellent with hardly any wear. Just slight fading. Must have been kept in an album or frame.   A note on the back says this is an Argyll and Sutherland Highlander with a studio sword. This is a famous Scottish regiment that has been involved since 1794 in Great Britain’s military exploits, including the Battle of New Orleans in 1815. The sword certainly could be a studio prop, but it looks very realistic. Clear, sharp image. Size 4.25” x 6.5”. Photographer: Waddells’s Fine Arts Studio, 43, Wellmeadow, Paisley (Scotland). Condition is excellent with just modest edge wear and very slight scuffing near edge of image on right.

CABINET PHOTO – DRUMMER IN UNIFORM - UNU $55.00

CABINET PHOTO – PRINCESS TINY – 21” TALL $55.00

CABINET PHOTO – CADET IN UNIFORM 1880’s $50.00

CABINET PHOTO –ARGYLL & SUTHERLAND HIGHL $45.00

Excellent view of a thriving 4-story commercial block in the 1880’s. Great look at the signage, awnings, merchandise and the employees of the businesses. There is the Boston Clothing Company, a furniture store that looks like Charles Shikarick, and a Merchant Tailor. Big sign over 2nd floor windows says “Furniture, Bedding & Co. Not sure where this was taken, but with the Boston reference, could be there. If you look closely, you can see several people peering out the upper windows. Size 4.25” x 6.5”. Condition is excellent overall. Very slight fading and soiling.

C.1880’s. This field of daisies looks pretty darn real. It is most likely a carefully rigged studio photo with fake, but convincing, daisies. Really well done. Size 4.25” x 6.5”. Photographer: Chas. F. Lee, No. 35 West Broad St, Elyria, Ohio. Condition is excellent overall. Very slight fading and soiling. A really charming piece.  A very interesting little junior cabinet card showing a beautifully dressed boy standing at attention with his realistic toy rifle at his side. He is wearing a great little suit and has a plumed hat. This is a small cabinet card measuring 3.5” x 5.2”. Photographer: Melendy & Packard, Manitowoc, Wisconsin. Both the image and card mount are in beautiful condition. It looks like this cabinet card was protected in an album.  Intriguing shot of an older man playing a snare drum next to a lake in Vermont. Probably about 1890 or so, so he could possibly have been a drummer boy in the Civil War, which was about 35 years previous to the photo. The image is nice and sharp. Size 4.25" x 6.5". Photographer: Kingsley, Bristol, Vermont. Both the image and card mount are in excellent condition. There are some tiny scratches on the image in a few spots, but it looks like it was protected in an album.

CABINET PHOTO – GIRL IN “FIELD” OF DAISI $40.00

CABINET PHOTO – LITTLE SOLDIER WITH TOY $75.00

CABINET PHOTO – OLD DRUMMER BOY $65.00

Delightfully Victorian image. C.1890's. Captivating, artistic cabinet photo of a woman lounging in a hammock next to a man seated in chair. He is holding an open book. His straw hat sits at his feet. They are both sheltered under an arbor with the leaves providing a pretty border at the top of the photograph. Photographer: A.W. Mason, Artist, Toronto. Size 4.25” x 6.5”. Card mount has very modest edge wear. This is a nice clear image of a Victorian moment.

This is a wonderfully unique piece from the 1890’s. Charming Christmas cabinet photo with small images of 4 different children around the poem in the middle. I believe this was done as a family card by dropping in the children’s photos taken by the photographer. The little girl at bottom left is holding a doll.

Photographer: Ann H. Pierce, Springville, N.Y. Size 4.25" x 6.5". Image is slightly discolored and has a small chip out of it which can be seen in the scan. Card mount is excellent wih almost no edge wear. Very unusual piece. SEE ALL THE CLOSE UPS.  We think this is a military cadet. He is wearing a nice wool uniform complete with the stripe on the pants. Photographer: Thomas, Columbia, Mo. Size 4.25" x 6.5". Image is nice and clear with only very slight yellowing. Card has almost no wear. Change of pace military piece.

In a room setting no less. This is an unusual image to say the least. C.1890’s. Note the wonderful surrounding details... the man’s umbrella, the unusual vase on the table, the prints on the wall, the bottle and other assorted vintage accessories. Perhaps a backstage photo from a play or maybe a photo from a costume party.

The photograph measures 3.75" x 4.5" and it is on a mat that measures 5.25" x 5.25". The embossed mat has some modest edge wear, but the photo is in extra fine condition. No creases, tears or discoloration. Extremely sharp with great contrast.

Great “action” shot of four guys playing cards. Coat over chair back. Straw hat tossed on the floor. Looks like they have little stem glasses of whiskey. The photograph measures 3.75” x 4.5” and it is on a mat that measures 5.25” x 5.25". The embossed mat has some moderate corner wear, but the photo itself is in excellent condition. No creases, tears and just slight fading. This is a great period piece.

Fine cabinet photo of a uniformed U.S. Army officer (Captain?) from approximately the 1870-80's period. Great look at his epaulets which are huge. We tried to get a view of the buttons, but they don't show up with enough detail.

Photographer: Etter, Somersworth, N.H.

Size 4 1/4 x 6 1/2.

Condition is excellent overall with slight fading which can be noted in the scan. The feathered lighting is part of the image.  Extremely fine and rare image of a 19th century English judge. Appears to have been taken in his chambers because the background looks like law books. Lighting is also different than studio lighting. There is a name written under the photo, but we can't make it out. W. C. Tully or Sully perhaps. Photographer: London Stereoscopic Co. 106 x 108 Regent Street, W. "Photographers to the Royal Family." The back of the card also advertises "Free Lessons In Photography" and " Special Studios & Dark Rooms reserved for the use of Amateurs." This is a superb piece in near perfect condition.  Rare, early sports "action" shot from the pre-sweatsuit era. Lawn bowling is still an institution in England. Size 3" x 4". Photographer: unknown. Unmounted. Excellent condition.
