Porcelain and Pottery: Belleek

What's New in the Collector's Showcase of Porcelain and Pottery: Belleek?
The Most Recent Additions to This Category are First!
Beautiful Irish Belleek porcelain handled butter server in the pattern of New Shell from circa 1955 - 1965. It is a elegant shell design with yellow highlights to look like coral and is in like new condition. It is approximately 6.00 inches long, 5.00 inches wide and 1 3/4 inches at the tallest point, with no nicks, chips, cracks or crazing. On the back you will find the what is known as the 2nd green mark or 5th mark that was used from 1955 - 1965. This pattern was produced from 1955 - 1991, so you should be able to complete a set fairly easy.  For more than 120 years, Irish Belleek, the fragile-appearing translucent porcelain, has held the interest of the collector.

Belleek was born on the banks of the river Erne (pronounced Aaron) in the County of Fermanagh (pronounced Fir-man-ah) in Ireland, the brainchild of John Caldwell Bloomfield. Bloomfield inherited the Castle Caldwell estate which encompassed the village of Belleek. Due to the severe deterioration of the estate, he vowed he would start a pottery to provide employment and upgrade conditions. It was a natural choice; all major ingredients to make pottery were present on the estate: feldspar, kaolin, flint, clay, shale, peat, power and trainable labor.

Few collectors realize that earthenware was the first product of Belleek. It remained their principal product until 1920, and was only discontinued entirely in 1946. Examples of early earthenware are rare and consequently quite costly if they can be found at all.

After WWII, the Belleek pottery concentrated all its production on parian china. The timing was right; Belleek found an insatiable market, both domestic and foreign. It was purchased again in 1985 by another Irishman and continues today to be a genuine Irish product.

Many of the patterns produced are named for natural elements- the sea surrounding the land and lands such as Finner and Rathmore. Some favorite employees are also memorialized by pattern names, such as Henshall, and Cleary, after James Cleary.

Belleek's marking system makes it fairly easy to date pieces, even though some patterns have been produced over a long period of time. The first three marks are black, lasting until 1946. The next three marks are green, lasting until approximately 1980, and the following mark was gold which in 1984 was changed to brown. Pieces with an early stamp bring prices almost double that of a similar piece of a later period.

This piece is in very good condition and would make a great addition to your Belleek collection.

In 1849 John Caldwell Bloomfield inherited the Castlecaldwell estate, which encompassed the village of Belleek, from his father. Mindful of the plight of his tenants in the aftermath of the potato famine he sought to provide some form of worthwhile employment.

To his delight it revealed the necessary raw materials to make Pottery - feldspar, kaolin, flint, clay and shale.

Bloomfield acquired partners in the venture, Robert Williams Armstrong an architect from London with an abiding interest in ceramics, and David Mc Birney, a wealthy Dublin merchant

Raw materials, power, capital and transportation all in place, plans for the construction of a Pottery building were drawn up. On Thursday 18th November 1858 Mrs Bloomfield laid the foundation stone.

By as early as 1865 the company had established a growing market throughout Ireland and England and was exporting pieces to the United States, Canada and Australia.

Mc Birney died in 1882 and Armstrong in January 1884. A group of local investors acquired the property and a new venture, the Belleek Pottery Works Company Ltd began trading in August 1884. The new Company officially acquired all the property.

A myriad of economic factors conspired to cause a change in Pottery ownership in 1983.

In 1990 the company was sold again to an investment group. Dr. George Moore, originally from Dundalk and now living in the USA, was appointed Chairman and the company is run locally by a group of four Directors - John Maguire (Managing), Hugh Quinn (Sales and Marketing), Martin Sharkey (Finance) and Arthur Goan (Operations).

Not only did the Belleek management team rejuvenate the Belleek enterprise, the also embarked upon an aggressive acquisition strategy which has seen the purchase of Galway Crystal (Galway City), Aynsley China (Stoke-on-Trent) and most recently Donegal Parian China (Ballyshannon, Co. Donegal). The Belleek Group today employs over 600 people with a yearly turnover of 40 million.

The thistle is the emblem of Scotland and is used extensively with many early Belleek designs along with the Rose (England) and the shamrock (Ireland). This vase was first shown in the 1928 Belleek Catalogue. This vase remained popular for many years but was eventually retired in 1990. It wass available again last year as a Limited Edition of 750 in the 2010 Archive Collection.
