Porcelain and Pottery: Gonder

What's New in the Collector's Showcase of Porcelain and Pottery: Gonder?

This is a lovely blue glazed figural planter. The swan planter is the smallest of 3 manufactured by Gonder. Lawton Gonder bought the Zane Pottery Co and incorporated his company as Gonder Ceramic Arts in 1941. Years later, after converting all his production to tile and other ceramic products, Gonder sold his business to Allied Tile Company in 1957. I do not know the actual age of this item.

The swan planter measures 5 1/4" H x 3 7/8" W x 5 3/4" L.

The bottom is mold marked: E-44 / Gonder / USA. Please see photos.

This planter is in excellent condition, though it could use light dusting and cleaning. Gonder pottery was so well made and glazed that it does not develop crazing like other pottery ware. It has fine surface scratches consistent with its age, normal use and storage. There is no damage: there are no nicks, flea-bites, chips, cracks, crazing or repairs. Spots are reflections from photography flash and lighting.  This is an unique, art deco style planter by Gonder. The planter is glazed Sea Swirl, a green color. Gonder Ceramic Arts was opened in 1941 by Lawton Gonder at Zanesville Ohio. The factory closed in 1957. Gonder is known for its stylish and beautiful art pottery.

The planter measures 7 3/4" (7.75") high x 7 3/4" (7.75") long.

This planter is mold marked on the bottom in script lettering Gonder / Original (please see last photo). It is also marked 674 on the foot rim. The planter is listed in the Index of Gonder Ceramic Arts: A Comprehensive Guide by Boshears as Mold # 674, Planter, Basket, Slanted, p 86.

This planter is in excellent condition and appears unused, though it could use dusting and cleaning. The planter has fine surface scratches consistent with its age, normal use and storage. There are no flea-bites, chips, cracks or repairs. Spots are reflections from photography flash and lighting. I have other Gonder pieces available.

This lovely art deco style vase was produced by Gonder Ceramic Arts during the middle of the twentieth (20th) century. The vase is glazed a lilac color (French Lilac) outside and the interior is pink. Gonder Ceramic Arts was opened in 1941 by Lawton Gonder at Zanesville Ohio. The factory closed in 1957. Gonder is known for its stylish and beautiful art pottery.

The vase measures 8 1/4" (8.25") high.

This vase is mold marked on the bottom in script lettering Gonder / USA / H-73 (please see close-up).

The vase is in very good to excellent condition. It could be dusted and cleaned some. There is a glaze pop at the top of the handle. There are no flea-bites, chips, crazing, cracks or repairs. Spots are reflections from photography flash and lighting.  This is a very attractive, free form design console bowl. The surface seen under the glaze has texture ridges. The bowl is double glazed blue over a gray or mauve color. Gonder Ceramic Arts was incorporated in 1941 at Zanesville Ohio after the purchase of Zane Pottery Company facility, formerly Peters and Reed. Gonder pottery is functional and of high quality; most pieces show little wear and are in exceptional condition. Glaze treatments were so good that many pieces do not reflect the crazing that appears on most other pottery. Before he sold his business and retired in 1957, Lawton Gonder had his company begin production of art tiles. I do not know the actual age of this listing.

This oval bowl measures about 8 3/4" x 11 1/4". It is 2 1/2" high on one side and 2 5/8" on another.

The 6" x 6 1/2" bottom is in-mold marked Gonder Original in script and 520 for the mold or form number. Please see photos.

This bowl is in excellent used condition for its likely age, though it could use light cleaning. There are surface scratches across the area of the stilt marks, and there is a glaze pop along the foot rim. Please see photos. There are no nicks, flea-bites, chips, crazing, cracks or repairs. Spots are reflections from photography flash and lighting.
