 Vintage Wooden Mexican "BALERO"

or "CUP AND BALL TOY"

OLD BALEROS ARE HARD-TO-FIND.

CUP AND BALL HAS ITS ORIGINS IN MEXICO

IN THE SIXTEENTH CENTURY

The flollowing information comes from Wikipedia:..."Cup-and-ball (or ball in a cup) is a traditional children's toy, consisting of a wooden cup with a handle, and a ball which is attached to a string, which is attached to the cup. It is popular in Spanish-speaking countries, where it is called "boliche". The name varies across many countries — in Argentina, Ecuador, Colombia, and Mexico it is called "balero"; in Spain it is "boliche"; in Brazil it is called "bilboquê"; in Chile it is "boliche" or "emboque"; in Colombia it is called "coca" or "ticayo"; and in Venezuela the game is called "perinola. "The main goal of the game is to get the ball into the cup. While the concept is very easy, mastering the game sometimes requires many hours of practice. To play, the player holds the cup by the handle and lets the ball hang freely. The player then tosses the ball upward by jerking the arm holding the toy, attempting to catch the ball in the cup. The player must not use any body part other than their handle-holding arm to catch the ball. The player must not purposefully bounce the ball off their body to change its trajectory."

THIS BALERO IS A GENUINE VINTAGE VERSION AND SHOWS VINTAGE MARKS OF AGE AND WEAR. MEASURES 4-1/2" TALL X 2-1/4" AT BASE. THE HANDLE IS 5" LONG.

This beautiful 15-5/8" diameter decorative Mexican pottery charger or wall plate is made of heavy reddish-gray clay, unglazed on the back. It isn't marked or signed, but is very typical of the hand thrown, burnished folk art pottery of the Tonala, Jalisco region of Mexico during the 1940s and early 1950s, with traditional earthen colors and "flora y fauna" design motifs. The scene depicts a graceful heron amid ferns and flowers in pleasing shades of terra cotta, rust, peach, gray, white, and black.

I noted only two small, shallow scratches to the paint near the rim. There are no chips, cracks, or design wear. A reinforced hanging hole is molded into the upper back for display on the wall.

This attractive two tile panel was made by the firm of Ramos Rejano, in Spain, circa 1940-1950. Each tile measures 10 3/4" x 5 1/2" - the tiles are glued together. Done in wax resist technique, also known as cuerda seca. The design is very interesting - it is the Coat of Arms of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico. According to Michie's Legal Resources website: "The coat of arms of the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico shall be "a green shield" bearing a silver lamb resting upon a red book and bearing a flag with cross and banner, as shown in the device of Saint John, and having for border castles, lions, flags and crosses of Jerusalem, and having for a device an F and Y with its crowns and yoke and arrows, and a motto around it as follows: Joannes est nomen ejvs.". One top left corner glaze chip - otherwise in extremely nice condition. (#T-1304)

This extremely nice tile panel was hand painted by Vicente Flores Navarro, at the Ceramica Santa Ana, which was founded in the Triana district of Sevilla in 1939. The tile blanks are from the firm of Mensaque Rodriguez (Spain). Three tiles make up this scene of a bull and matador in a stadium. The tiles measure 10 7/8" x 5 1/2" by just under 1/2" thick. The right tile has a large chip on its bottom left corner. Otherwise, in very nice condition. I believe this is circa 1940's. (#T-1931)

This tile panel, and the other one I have in stock from this artist and company are unusual as the majority of works produced were usually religious retablos and Bible scenes.
