What's New in the Collector's Showcase of Porcelain and Pottery: Yellowware?

This is an outstanding vintage large spatterware Pitcher. Very attractive coloring and in excellent condition.  Nice Coloring on this Yellowware Spatterware Pitcher. Pitcher stands 4.5 inches tall and is in excellent condition.  Ruckel's Pottery was established in 1870 in White Hall Illinois. White Hall attracted many different pottery companies due to the abundance of clay in the area. Ruckel's Pottery was one of the more popular companies and operated from the late 1800's and into the early part of the 1900's. Ruckel's pottery mixing bowls, in general, are somewhat hard to find. This bowl features the Inverted Pyramid pattern, and is also known as Picket Fence. It is a pattern of alternating large and small triangles around both the outer rim and side of each bowl. This bowl is part of the nesting set and is the largest size of the nested mixing bowls.

Ruckel's marked the bowls on the undersides before glazing, and the glaze had a tendency to fill in the mark. From our research, we know that they say "Ruckel's Pottery Whitehall Ill 1870", when held in the just the right light you can make out the Pottery and White Hall, the rest is really hard to see. It is 10 3/4 inches across and just over 5 inches deep, in excellent condition, no chips, does have an extremely minor age related line across the bottom. A beautiful addition to your collection.

Vintage Yellowware Bowl with two brown bands. The piece has a small inside base chip which is not visible unless you turn it over.

Yellowware Bowl $45.00

Custard dish decorated yellow ware / sponge ware – 2-1/4 inches height, 3-inches across the rim, 1-3/4 inches across the base. Condition: vintage, has age crazing, no chips  Here is a very nice pair of old yelloware bowls that nest perfectly and are so closely matched in pattern and color they look like they were made by the same hands on the same day. The larger bowl is 9 inches wide and has the most evidence of hard use. There are a number of popped surface bubbles on the inside and a extremely fine hairline crack that has probably been their since before any of us were born. The crazing is lovely and so is the color. The 8 inch bowl is in very good condition and has no cracks or chips , just a few tiny flea bites and lots of classic grazing. Each has two sets of three blue slip bands . A great looking set of boels for nesting.  This is a really nice and very early yellow ware mixing bowl that also happens to be quite massive. The bowl measures eleven and a half inches across and has a wonderful embossed wave pattern. The underside of the lip, like many early pieces, is

unfinished and shows a lot of staining, but a bit of bleach and a little patience will fix that in a hurry.

Nice smooth interior glazing with no chips or cracks and a great looking pattern of crazing throughout.  Crude, in a nice sort of way, this vintage number 7 yelloware mixing bowl is also in very good condition. The bowl measures seven and a half inches in diameter and three hand-painted blue slip stipes. No cracks or chips, just normal wear marks and a very nice pattern of crazing. Will make a great addition to someone's collection of Yellow ware.

Large, hand-thrown yellow ware (or yelloware) pitcher decorated with two thin, blue bands. Wide mouth, measuring 5 1/4 inches long by 4 1/4 inches wide. Rows of hand-thrown ripples are evident on the inside of pitcher.

Pitcher is very heavy, weighing in at 3 lbs!

Size: 6 inches tall; 6 1/4 inches wide.

Vintage, Robinson Ransbottom yellow ware pitcher with hand painted over glaze designs. Designs feature a pair of red strawberries, and two blue bands.

This is a left-handed pitcher.

Made in USA.

Circa: 1940's-1970's.

Size: 4 3/4 inches tall; 3 1/2 inches wide.

Condition: Used; very good condition.  		This is a wonderful and Scarce Antique Yellowware Victorian Grape Pattern Food Mold. The mold is a cut-corner rectangular pyramid bordered with graduated arches set beneath a bunch of grapes framed in a smaller cut-corner rectangle. The rich color for which

yellow ware received its name, is captured here in this wonderful old mold. I consider the condition of this scarce piece as being very good, even approaching excellent when you consider it dates to the late 1800’s. There are a few rough spots which seem to have been caused in the original shaping process, and the shape, like any old hand made and fired pottery piece, is slightly uneven, but to me these are the things that make this old yellow ware grape design food mold so unique.  Nested Yellow Ware Bowls – Blue & White stripes

Another lovely set of vintage yellow ware bowls with double blue stripes, faintly accented with white. The bowls date back to the early 1900’s, perhaps even before that, but are in very nice condition, with the rich, yellow color they were named for. There are two bowls in this group. The largest is the number 9, which measures 9 inches across and is slightly more than 5 inches tall. The 9 is in very good condition with only minor wear and the normal crazing effect that comes from the aging of the glaze. Its cousin is the number 8 and as you likely have guessed, it measures 8 inches across and stands just over 4 and 1/2 inches tall. The bowl is a perfect match to the 9, but does have a Y shaped, hairline crack in the bottom. The crack has likely been there for decades and should not cause a problem when the bowl is used, but it needed to be mentioned. Other than the hairline, the 8 is lovely and makes a perfect companion piece to the 9.

Together these bowls make a lovely set that would be a highlight in anyone’s kitchen. Not only are they old, beautiful and still able to do the job they were designed to do, these bowls, like all quality antiques are also a very good investment.

Smoke Set by 'BB' Bernhard Bloch $125.00

Gift Art / Bush Ceramics; a 1960's piece.

This is a Victorian style vase/planter/cuspidor/spitoon with a Bennington drip glaze over yelloware. Top opening is 6 inches and the height is 3 ½ inches. This piece has medium crazing, but no damage. There is a nice side pattern, that gives it a special look, and has a double; slightly footed area on the bottom, which is not glazed. That same area gives the piece an unusual inside bottom, where the pottery was pushed out for the two footed areas on the underneath. I doubt you can notice that in the photo’s. The rim is hand done, and spongeware decorated, uneven in places. Not marked, originally would have had a foil label reading: Gift Art - Brush Ceramics.  This is a beautiful piece of spongeware / yelloware decorated with a floral row around the top edge. Has the Bennington type glaze. This pattern makes even a spittoon attractive! About 7 ½ inches across the top and 3 ½ inches in height with a side drain, and it is open at the center. Very minor scuffs, crazing – has an aged chip near the side drain hole, another small chip on base, has a hairline in the drain area that slopes down, all to be expected in an old pottery piece of this age.  A yelloware - spongeware bowl that measures 5 inches across and 1 7/8 inches in height. Light crazing, beautifull colored.  This is a beautiful piece of spongeware / yelloware decorated with a row of seashells around the top edge with a bead between them, has the Bennington type glaze, for a stunning look! Makes even a spittoon attractive! About 8 inches across the top and 4 inches in height with a side drain, and it is open at the center. Very minor scuffs, very light crazing – just a great piece from a recent estate sale in Kentucky.
