*** I’ve included a short but interesting article in regards to UNDERSTANDING THE MEANING BEHIND "THE SERMON ON THE MOUNT":

In the Gospel of St. Matthew, the Sermon on the Mount is a compilation of Jesus' sayings, epitomizing his moral teaching. According to chapters 5-7, Jesus of Nazareth gave this sermon (estimated around AD 30) on a mountainside to his disciples and a large crowd. Matthew groups Jesus' teachings into five discourses, of which the Sermon on the Mount is the first. The others concern instructions for the disciples, parables of the Kingdom, instructions for the church, and a harsh denunciation of scribes and Pharisees.

The best-known written portions of the open-air sermon comprise the Beatitudes, found at the beginning of the section. The sermon also contains the Lord's Prayer and the injunctions to "resist not evil" (5:39) and "turn the other cheek", as well as a version of the Golden Rule. Other lines often quoted are the references to "salt of the earth", "light of the world" and "judge not, lest ye be judged."

Many Christians believe that the Sermon on the Mount is a form of commentary on the Ten Commandments. It portrays Christ as the true interpreter of the Mosaic Law. To many, the Sermon on the Mount contains the central tenets of Christian discipleship, and is considered as such by many religious and moral thinkers, such as Tolstoy, Gandhi, Dietrich Bonheoffer, and Martin Luther King, Jr. It has been one of the main sources of Christian pacifism.

The last page in the back of the book reads, "The events narrated in this album are found in the Holy Bible principally in the Book of Exodus, Chapters XIII - XX and Chapters XXXII". Next to those words is an embossed patent stamp that reads, "N. Arthur Relmen; No. 2011; Licensed Professional Engineer; State of New York". There are 12 full-color perforated photo plates in the middle of the book that are meant to be applied to their correct places throughout the book. This book has never been used and the color plates are all intact. Also, there are numerous beautiful black and white and color illustrations throughout the book with informative captions below on almost every turn of the page! There’s even a full page color map of "The Probable Route of the Israelites from Egypt to Mount Sinai". This book has a total of 64 pages. This teaching book is in excellent original condition, except there is very slight scuffing to the back of the book. Every page is fully intact and the binding is tight. This book has no stains, tears, creasing, browning, foxing, writing, doodling, or pen ink. Circa 1959.

This is lovely antique print featuring Madonna embracing Baby Jesus while the young John the Baptist devoutly watches. This picture represents itself as a symbol of humanity with St. John the Baptist and renders homage to maternity with The Madonna. This picture is titled, "Madonna Della Sedia" by famous artist, Raphael (Raffaello Santi or Sanzio). This picture was originally painted by him in circa 1512 to c.1514. Someone once said, "When he died, the heavens wanted to give one of the signs they gave when Jesus Christ expired...Here, people are talking about nothing but the death of this exceptional man, who has completed his first life at the young age of 37. His second life - that of his fame, which is subject neither to time nor death - will endure for all eternity…". This print has beautiful details and colors throughout. The matting is very elaborate with beautiful embossed designs. The molded wood frame is fancy and retains a great original gold finish. Original glass and original backing with original label. The label reads, " R. 702; Madonna Del Sedia; By Raphael; C. & A. Richards; Boston, Mass.". This picture can be displayed one of two ways - hanging it on the wall with its original metal hanger or as a table top display with its original fold out stand. The fold out stand has a crease towards the bottom (probably from sitting on a table top for a long while) but it works just fine. Circa 1920’s.

***I’ve included a short article written about RAPHAEL SANTI (1483- 1520) & THIS PICTURE:

Raphael painted the picture in Rome, probably during the period immediately after the completion of the Stanza di Eliodoro. It soon passed into the Medicean collections. It was already there by 1589 and has been in the Pitti since the 18th century. It was carried off to Paris by the Napoleonic troops in 1799 and brought back to Florence in 1815.

A celebrated picture in which Raphael is under the influence of the antique and of the Venetian school, of Titian and of Sebastiano del Piombo. The form of a "tondo" is in itself a reminder of Florence and carries us back to the taste of the Quattrocento. Of the form of the tondo the artist preserves and emphasizes the curve with his genial adaptation of the figures to the outline of the painting. And yet the composition is in no way forced, but on the other hand the figures in following the curve become more closely entwined together. This grouping, this closing around the fulcrum of the tondo coincides with the centre of affection - the little Christ, the spiritual centre of the picture. The colour, in spite of its vividness, has a fusion and a warmth which Raphael attains with genial and personal mastery.

***Here is a little more info about this picture and the artist, Raphael:

The Madonna della seggiola or Madonna della sedia is a Madonna painting by the Italian renaissance artist Raphael. It depicts Mary embracing the child Christ, while the young John the Baptist devoutly watches. It is housed in the Palazzo Pitti collection in Florence.

Painted during his Roman period, this Madonna does not have the strict geometrical form and linear style of his earlier Florentine treatments of the same subject. Instead, the warmer colors seem to suggest the influence of Titian and Raphael's rival Sebastiano del Piombo.

Maria Montessori, Italian doctor and pioneer in pedagogy, wrote that it was her wish that the Madonna della seggiola hang in each Children's House (Montessori school) as a symbol of "humanity [St. John] rendering homage to maternity [Madonna]".

- This was cited from the following website: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Madonna_della_seggiola

***I’ve also included another short BIO ABOUT THE FAMOUS, RAPHAEL:

Italian master painter and architect of the Italian High Renaissance, Raphael is best known for his Madonna’s, such as Madonna della Sedia, and his large figure compositions now housed in the Vatican in Rome. His work is much admired for its clarity of form and ease of composition and for its visual achievement of the Neoplatonic ideal of human grandeur.

Raphael was already being described as a master in 1501. After moving to Rome in 1508, Raphael was commissioned by Julius II to paint some of the rooms of the palace in the Vatican. One of these paintings was The School of Athens. This was unheard of at the time for a inexperienced artists of only 25 years old. In 1514, Raphael was commissioned to rebuild St. Peter s, and although his work has since been demolished or altered, for a time he was the most important painter and architect in Rome.

Marked by perfection and grace, Raphael paintings and sculptures were highly admired by his contemporaries. When compared to the great Michelangelo or Titian, Raphael may be considered inferior, but he always triumphs when considering the ease and grace of his creations.

This is a beautiful crisp and detailed antique print of the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus surrounded by 6 Angels. All of their faces are exquisitely detailed! The colors are bright and vivid. Both the Virgin Mary and Baby Jesus have a halo and are bathed in a heavenly light from above. The artist of this picture is the famous, Sandro Botticelli and the actual title for this picture (although not written anywhere) is, "The Madonna of the Pomegranate". The molded wood frame retains the original gold finish with black and red trim color. It has a nice old patina. The picture and frame are both in excellent original condition with the original hanger and labels on the back. The top label reads, "Virgin and Six Angels By Botticelli". The middle label towards the bottom reads, "For Elizabeth + Buckstien". The bottom label reads, "From Aunt Nell". Circa 1920’s.

*** I’ve included below some VERY INTERESTING INFORMATION ABOUT THIS PICTURE, "THE MADONNA OF THE POMEGRANATE":

The Madonna of the Pomegranate is a painting by the Italian Renaissance master Sandro Botticelli, circa 1487. It is housed in the Uffizi Gallery of Florence, Italy.

The picture's title is explained by the pomegranate in Mary's hand: this could be understood as symbolizing Christ's Passion, the wealth of seeds conveying the fullness of Christ's suffering. It could also be understood as a symbol of heretical art and signify the fertility of Jesus. A comparison of this painting with Botticelli's earlier tondo, Madonna of the Magnificat, reveals that the artist has now arranged the angels symmetrically, thereby avoiding the compositional difficulties of the older depiction.

The Christ Child, whose hand is raised in blessing, is lying securely in the arms of Mary, but the sad, melancholy expression on the faces of mother and child are intended to remind the observer of the torments the Son of God will suffer in the future. The angels are venerating Mary with lilies and garlands of roses. The Rosary is a prayer that was created in its present form in the 15th century, and rapidly became widespread. The beginning of this prayer is embroidered on the left angel's stola: AVE MARIA GRAZIA PLENA ("Hail Mary, full of grace").

*** Here is a short little BIO ABOUT FAMOUS LISTED ARTIST, SANDRO BOTTICELLI:

Original name ALESSANDRO DI MARIANO FILIPEPI (b. 1445, Florence [Italy]--d. May 17, 1510, Florence), Florentine early Renaissance painter whose Birth of Venus (c. 1485) and Primavera (1477-78) are often said to epitomize for modern viewers the spirit of the Renaissance. His ecclesiastical commissions included work for all the major churches of Florence and for the Sistine Chapel in Rome. His name is derived from his elder brother Giovanni, a pawnbroker, who was called Il Botticello ("The Little Barrel").

Although he was one of the most individual painters of the Italian Renaissance, Sandro Botticelli remained little known for centuries after his death. Then his work was rediscovered late in the 19th century by a group of artists in England known as the Pre-Raphaelites.

Born Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi in Florence in 1445, Botticelli was apprenticed to a goldsmith. Later he was a pupil of the painter Fra Filippo Lippi. He spent all his life in Florence except for a visit to Rome in 1481-82. There he painted wall frescoes in the Sistine Chapel of the Vatican.

- The above bio was cited from the following website: http://www.ibiblio.org/wm/paint/auth/botticelli/  This is an XXLG, gorgeous antique print titled, "The Lord is My Shepherd". The print is a captivating interpretation of Jesus holding a little lamb in his arm. He is surrounded by a flock of sheep including one black sheep. The landscape is lush with greenery, a river, and mountains in the background. The colors are bright and vivid. The size of the print is quite impressive! The print is in excellent original condition. The artist’s signature, copyright date, and manufacturer’s name can be found in the lower right corner of the print, "Warner Sallman 1943, Copyright 1943; Kriebel & Bates". In the lower left corner the print reads, "Copyright 1943 Kriebel & Bates". The wood frame is original and decorated with elaborate applied gesso. The frame is in excellent original condition and retains its beautiful, old gold finish. Original glass, wire hanger, and paper backing. Circa 1943.

*** I have included below, WARNER SALLMAN’S WONDERFULLY INTERESTING INTERPRETATION OF HIS PICTURE, "THE LORD IS MY SHEPHERD":

A favorite image to place in the bedroom and Sunday School classroom, The Lord is My Shepherd visualizes the pastoral image of Psalm 23, but does so without the dark side of the ancient verse. Indeed, this may account for the appeal of Sallman’s rendition: there is not a hint of the "valley of the shadow of death" here, only a tranquil vision of "still waters" and "green pastures." The message was one of comfort with no reference to the threats to which the Psalmist alluded. The small, plump sheep inhabit a utopian garden landscape that is nothing if not peaceable. Christ is as gentle as his flock, with whom he is identified by the color and softness of his robe. Located at the heart of the quiet flock, Christ emanates an emollient aura and dotes upon the lamb, symbol of his concern for children. Even the "little black sheep" follows his lead. According to promotional literature, this animal "is a symbol of the wayward sheep who have been restored again to the fold."

While Sallman’s imagery is often dismissed for its sentimentality, it is clear in details such as this and in the overall composition of The Lord is My Shepherd that he was able to create pictures that convey very effectively the sentiment that mattered to his appreciative public. In this painting, for instance, Christ and his flock are nestled in a brightly painted landscape that wraps about them; framed by the diagonal creek in the lower left, the sheep are surrounded by the hatched movement of the verdure and the diagonal shore of the river to the upper right. The tree in the upper left echoes Christ’s gesture and helps construct a balanced and centered composition that conveys the serenity which Sallman and his audience considered the ideal of the pious life. One mother, for whom the Head of Christ symbolized stability and peace during a childhood plagued by an alcoholic parent, displayed The Lord is My Shepherd in her bedroom. She referred to Christ "holding the lamb with the mother sheep looking on with concern" and drew great relief from the relationship between savior, lamb, and the ewe as she thought about her own children: "What solace to know who held them (her children) as they began to go out on their own."

Sallman found the idea for this painting in Bernhard Plockhorst’s 19th-century portrayal of the subject, which shows the mother sheep craning its head upward toward its lamb in Christ’s arms. Sallman elevated the viewer above the scene somewhat in order to introduce the colorful landscape. Yet in adjusting the perspective of the landscape and sheep, he did not reduce the height of Christ who towers above the flock gathering about his knees. This characteristic diminution of subject matter may be an important element in the great appeal of Sallman’s work: by making the sheep doll-like, Sallman enhanced their dependence on the paternal savior and gave them a charm that corresponds to the cherubic cuteness of children in such images as He Careth For You.

- This great informative article was cited from the following website: http://www.warnersallman.com/collection/images/the-lord-is-my-shepard/  This is a rare antique plaster plaque in high relief. The picture features the beautiful Saint Cecilia (also known as 'The Holy Virgin') playing the organ (as she's famous for) looking up at three adorable angels who are visiting her. The closest angel is offering her a shower of roses. Nice details throughout. The plaque is in excellent original condition and retains the original gold finish. There are NO cracks or chips to the plaque. On the bottom edge of the plaque is the manufacturer’s name. It’s a little difficult to make out the first word, but the second word is, "Chicago". (see photo) Original hooks and wire hanger. Circa 1920’s.

*** I've included below a little information about the famous SAINT CECILIA:

"Saint Cecilia (Latin: Sancta Caecilia) is the patron saint of musicians and Church music. Cecilia was a young noblewoman of Rome. A devout Christian, she had pledged herself to chastity. Venerated in both East and West, she is one of the eight women commemorated by name in the Canon of the Mass.

Since the fourteenth and fifteenth centuries Cecilia is represented as playing the organ, evidently to express the idea that while musicians played at her wedding, she sang in her heart to God alone. When the Academy of Music was founded at Rome (1584) she was made patroness of the institute, whereupon her veneration as patroness of church music became more universal. The organ is now her most usual attribute."

*** I've also included below some extra information about SAINT CECILIA:

"Here follows of Saint Cecilia, virgin and martyr, and first of her name. Cecilia is as much to say as the lily of heaven, or a way to blind men. Or she is said of celo and lie, or else cecilia, as lacking blindness. Or she is said of celo, that is heaven, and legs, that is people. She was a heavenly lily by cleanness of virginity, a way to blind men by information of example, heaven by devout contemplation, lia by busy operation, lacking blindness by shining of wisdom, and heaven of the people. For the people beheld in her as in following the spiritual heaven, the sun, the moon, and the stars, that is to say, shining of wisdom, magnanimity of faith, and diversity of virtues. Or she is said a lily, for she had the whiteness of cleanness, a good conscience, and odour of good fame. Or she is said heaven, for Isidore says that the philosophers say that heaven is movable, round, and burning. In like wise was she moving by busy operation, round by perseverance, and burning by fiery charity.

Saint Cecilia, the holy virgin, was come of the noble lineage of the Romans, and from the time that she lay in her cradle she was fostered and nourished in the faith of Christ, and always bare in her breast the gospel hid, and never ceased day nor night from holy prayers, but recommended to God always her virginity.

However, her parents arranged for her to marry the noble Valerian. On the day of the wedding, she was clad in royal clothes of gold, but under she wore the hair. At the wedding celebration, while the musicians and singers performed music of a secular nature, her thoughts were only of God. Hearing the organs making melody, she sang in her heart, only to God, saying: "O Lord, I beseech thee that mine heart and body may be undefouled so that I be not confounded." Every second and third day she fasted, commending herself unto our Lord whom she dreaded."

This antique print is in excellent original condition. In the lower left corner of the print is either a signature or another title. It is difficult to make out. It appears to read, "Eine Vision". When I translated the words from German to English it read "A Vision". The title is centered under the print on the original matting which bears the original plate mark. The original wood frame has a lovely textured gold finish that is highly complimentary to the print. It is also in excellent original condition. I believe the full title of this picture is, "The Immaculate Conception of the Venerable Ones, or of Soult". Although this print is neither signed by the artist, nor actually titled, I do know that this famous picture was originally painted in 1678 by the great listed artist, Bartolomé Esteban Murillo (1618-1682). Today, the original painting currently hangs in a Museum at The Prado of Madrid in Spain. As for this gorgeous antique print, it is very hard to find and its large size is definitely rare. The picture is bright and colorful and the details are just beautiful. This print is in excellent original condition, except for some very minor particles under the glass, which does not take away from the beauty of this piece or the overall appearance. The print is in its original wood and gesso frame. The frame is massive in size and very decorative with bold gesso designs throughout. The frame is in excellent original condition and retains its original gold finish. It has the old glass and old wire hanger. Circa 1900.  This is an endearing antique religious inspirational print of "Christ Blessing the Children". In this captivating print, Jesus holds a baby as He’s surrounded by many adorable sweet looking children and others. They are gathered near Jesus as he blesses the children. The colors are bright and vivid with many details throughout the picture. The decorated molded wood frame retains the original ivory paint with gold highlights. Both the print and frame are in excellent original condition. Old glass and ribbon hanger. Circa 1920’s.

This is a stunning and beautiful antique religious plaque. It’s made of plaster and has a lovely shape. This plaque is heavy and substantial. It features Mary bowing her head in prayer with her hands clasped. Sweet Baby Jesus is laying down in front of Mary. He appears to be fast asleep, with his hands to his chest, holding a single flower to his heart. It’s a precious scene. There’s a lot of depth and texture to this plaque. The top portion of this plaque is in the shape of an arbor and is decorated with stars around the border. The bottom portion of this plaque has a shapely scroll design ending in a shell. This antique plaque is in beautiful, excellent original condition with no wear to the old, original gold-painted finish. The plaster has just a couple very tiny flakes to the back of the plaque. There are no cracks, stains, or repairs to this piece. The bottom edge of the plaque has the artist’s name and city etched into it. The words are a little faint, but I believe it reads, "L. Connelly" and the city reads, "Chicago.". Also, there’s an interesting bit of history that goes along with this plaque. The back is signed by the gift giver with a message. It reads, "Presented by The Sisters of St. Francis; Pittsburgh, Pa.; July 10, 1935; In return for a little favor done for them a few weeks before". How intriguing! I wonder what the favor was? This convent is now called ‘Sisters of St. Francis of the Providence of God’. The plaque has a nice, original, strong wire hanger. Circa 1920’s.

*** I have researched and included a link where you can read all about the history and current life of THE SISTERS OF ST. FRANCIS from Pittsburgh, PA. There is even an old picture of the Sisters who belonged to the convent around the 1920’s. Here’s the link: osfprov.org/history.asp  This is a beautiful, rare, antique Victorian lithograph print of Saint Anne teaching young Mary the Bible. It is quite rare to see pictures of Mary as a child. This endearing picture shows a bright and hopeful Mary clasping her hands in prayer. Both Anne and Mary have lovely colorful clothing. This print has nice details throughout. The print is in excellent original condition, except for some slight rippling of the lithograph. This does not detract from the beauty of this Victorian picture and is only noticeable in certain lighting. The original decorative wood frame is in a Victorian Eastlake design. It has decorative wood veneers with incising and a highlighted gold inset. The frame is in excellent original condition with a couple of veneer chips. The frame has a nice old original finish. This piece retains the original glass, wood backing, and wire hanger. Circa 1880’s.

*** There is much information that can be found on the Internet about Saint Anne, but I’ve included a few interesting words on SAINT ANNE, as well as a DAILY PRAYER:

*Saint Anne is a Patron Saint of Married Women:

According to legend, Saint Anne was married three times, first to Saint Joachim, after his death to Cleophas, and finally to Salomas. Her ability to find husbands inspired women to turn to her for help in finding a husband. "I beg of You, Holy Mother Anne, send me a good and loving man."

*Saint Anne Provides Aid in Granting Children:

According to legend, both Saint Anne and Saint Joachim prayed to God for a child. God blessed them with Mary, mother to Jesus and venerated as "Our Mother," therefore making Saint Anne "Grandmother" to followers for centuries.

*Daily Prayer to Saint Anne:

O glorious Saint Anne, you are filled with compassion for those who invoke you and with love for those who suffer! Heavily burdened with the weight of my troubles, I cast myself at your feet and humbly beg of you to take the present intention which I recommend to you in your special care. Please recommend it to your daughter, the Blessed Virgin Mary, and place it before the throne of Jesus, so that He may bring it to a happy issue. Continue to intercede for me until my request is granted. But, above all, obtain for me the grace one day to see my God face to face, and with you and Mary and all the saints to praise and bless Him for all eternity. Amen
