one small silver strip of bezel missing, otherwise very fine

panels read;

Inspiring bold John Barleycorn!

What dangers thou canst make us scorn

Wi' Tippeny, we fear nae evil;

Wi Usquabae we'll face the devil_

The swats sae reamid in Tammie's noddle

Fair play, he car'd na diels a hoddle.

The souter tauld his queerest stories;

The landlord's laugh was ready chorus,

The storm without might rair & rustle

Tam did na mind the storm a whistle

Nae man can tether time or tide;

The hour approaches Tam maun ride;

That hour, o' night's black arch the key-stane,

That dreary hour he mounts his beast in;

And sic a night he taks the road in

As ne'er poor sinner was abroad in.

Whene'er to drink you are inclin'd,

Or cutty-sarks run in your mind,

Think! ye may buy joys o'er dear -

Remember Tam o' Shanter's mare.

This sterling spoon is marked 925/1000 and has a twisted handle that ends in a barbed spike that looks like an arrow. The bowl of the spoon has floral repousse. Most mote spoons were pierced (see #L084 above) and so this may be a pierced olive spoon, but has frequently been described as a mote spoon. It is marked 925/1000 and has a twisted handle that ends in a barbed spike that looks like an arrow and it is slightly curved. The bowl of this ususual spoon is pierced. Mote spoons had several uses. They were usually pierced spoons (like strainers), used to remove tiny bits of debris ("mote") or loose tea leaves from a tea caddy before putting the leaves into a teapot. After pouring brewed tea into a tea cup, they also were used to remove extraneous tea leaves from the cup. The pointed handle was used to push tea leaves back into a clogged spout.
