This service for twelve Community Silverplate flatware set in the Evening Star pattern was made by Oneida LTD. 1950-1961.

The Oneida Community was founded by John Humphrey Noyes in upstate New York in 1848. In 1935 the company's name was changed to Oneida Ltd. During the 1960s, Oneida began to focus more on stainless steel flatware, instead of on the more expensive and prestigious silver-plated and sterling flatware that had previously been its hallmark. Technological breakthroughs in the late 1960s allowed Oneida to introduce the first ornate stainless flatware that had a decorative pierced pattern similar to sterling and silver plate. With these more attractive and formal patterns, stainless flatware gained a place in the silver departments of fine department stores. Because stainless was easier to care for and was far less expensive than sterling and silver plate, this new flatware sold briskly, sparking a recovery that led Oneida into a new era of growth. Oneida Ltd. is the world's largest stainless steel and silver-plated flatware maker, serving both the consumer and food service markets. Its operations in the United States, Canada, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and Italy manufacture and market sterling, silver-plated, and stainless flatware, as well as china dinnerware and hollowware (coffee sets and trays).

It comes with all the serving pieces. The set contains 77 pieces in all:

12-hollow knives that measure 9 1/4 inches,

12-dinner forks that measure 7 5/8 inches,

12-salad forks that measure 6 5/8 inches,

23-teaspoons that measure 6 1/8 inches,

12-round bowl soup spoons that measure 7 inches,

1-sugar spoon that measure 6 1/4 inches,

1-pierced table serving spoon that measure 8 3/8 inches,

1-medium solid cold meat fork that measure 8 1/2 inches,

1-solid piece gravy ladle that measure 7 1/8 inches,

1-butter spreader that measure 6 15/16 inches and

1-tablespoon serving spoon that measure 8 3/8 inches.

The pieces are marked Community while the label in the chest is marked: Tested and Approved Anti-Tarnish By Oneida LTD. Silversmiths Laboratories. The silverware does show some scratching from age and use, but all in all is in very good + condition and the outside of the box apparently has been neglected for a long time as their are knicks and chips in the wood and is in need of a good scratch cover polishing. I will not mess with the box at all, but if buyer wants to preserve the beauty of the box, spray it with a sealer to seal in all the chippiness and keep it from chipping any more.

An addition to any Holiday Table Setting or Oneida LTD. Collection.

SH & Ins. will be quoted after orders placed. If you have questions feel free to contact me and thank you for looking.  7-3/4 inch long serving or cold meat fork in the 1956 Silver Tulip pattern by International Silver. There are some typical light use and storage marks, no plate loss.
