Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. OUR NOTES: Karl White's three volume series has consistently remained one our most popular resources in this field. Taken together, they represent one of the most broad and comprehensive approaches to this highly collectible (and profitable) collecting hobby. I heartily recommend Karl's 3 book set as a worthy addition to any collector or dealer's reference library. -- John Kincaid, Collector Bookstore Author's Introduction: The purpose of this book is to identify and evaluate reels and metal lures dated up to 1970. Good reels usually have identification on them. Prices can fluctuate up to 50%, according to the demand of antique tackle. One thing to remember is that the better items keep getting more valuable and the common items stay about the same. Reel and lure sets (items of one company's production) and sets of all the individual reels produced of one type, should be at least 25% more valuable. The values in this book are rated as to excellent condition, although the items pictured might not be. Rarity, demand, condition and age determine value. Keep in mind that the higher the number of items found and in circulation, the lower the value is. A true collector obtains tackle for love of the hobby and not for the investment. The only common denominator that everyone understands is putting a dollar value on it. Good finds of antique fishing tackle are hard to come by and more people are collecting the 1940's, and later. In this book the lures are indexed alphabetically by manufacturer and by common name. The reels are indexed by manufacturer only. There are three indexes: Lure by Manufacturer Lure by Common Name Reels by Manufacturer The pictures in this book were done to give the best view of the item to help with identification. The sizes of the actual lures and reels are not relative to the picture size. All pictures were done by digital camera and are computer enhanced. Enlarged pictures may be obtained for a nominal fee. Best of luck and good hunting, Karl T White -- From Introduction of Contents, page 4  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. -- John Kincaid, Collector Bookstore Author's Introduction: These three volumes of "Fishing Tackle Antiques and Collectables" contain my entire collection, with the exception of duplicates. With the donation of my collection, this will be the conclusion of most of my involvement in collecting, having been in it for 55 years. I am consulting now only. The reason for all the unknowns included in the three volumes are so that hopefully, the next generation of collectors will be able to identify them. Fishing tackle is the only collectable which has artistic, mechanical and craft involved. Keep in mind that good items keep getting better and junk will always be junk. Values will be consistent with this statement. Sets, as color or single items will bring a premium. I have been told many times that you can't collect everything, but I have found that this is not true, but having the knowledge of everything is fleeting. Any good collector who focuses on one subject will far exceed my knowledge of that subject. A true collector obtains items for the love of the subject. The only time I have had regrets is the few times I have gotten rid of an item of which I only had one of. It has been a pleasure for me to be part of this hobby and I thank you for sharing your knowledge. The fishing tackle collection will be on display at the beginning of 2003 at the Oklahoma Aquarium in Jenks, Oklahoma (a southern suburb of Tulsa). With the conclusion of these three volumes and the donation I bid you farewell as I am now retired from collecting. Best of luck and good hunting, -- Karl T. The fascination of a traditionally built, double-barreled gun can scarcely fail to attract a passionate hunter. For one thing, there is the perfection of handiwork in making clean-shooting guns, but also the spirit that emanates from these weapons. The double-barreled gun is part of hunting, and when you hold an old English gun in your hand, your mind's eye almost automatically conjures up visions of elephants, buffalo, or lions, great antelopes in the African scrub or rain forest, even if you are just hunting deer or wild boar back home. With the detailed engraving, beautiful grain, checkered stocks, and high finishes of many double-barreled guns, they are ideal for your hunting or dreaming. This book presents the double-barrel gun in 272 beautiful photos and clear informative text that will captivate a hunter's attention and inspire the sport.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. The gun's name is derived from the German word for three "drei". As a "combination gun," the Drilling is comprised of various combinations of shotgun and/or rifle barrels, giving the flexibility of shooting both types of cartridges with a very wide range of caliber from one firearm. Designed for the discerning hunter or survivalist, these guns were originally designed for the German and Austria forests where there was an advantage to carrying one gun with multiple loads when hunting the dense forests filled with various types of game, from deer, to wild boar and fowl. The option of quickly choosing a specific caliber enabled the hunter to be ready for whatever came out of the woods. Primarily made by small manufacturers, Drillings were offered in a broad range of barrel configurations, combinations, and calibers. Many of these firearms were custom made and are highly decorated through detailed engraving, stock carving and customized metal work. This book is an essential reference to this type of gun and looks at both older as well as contemporary Drillings and gives instructions on their use.

His invention, in 1833, of the pinfire system opened the door on the concept of practical self-contained ammunition, eventually prompting the development of today's modern centerfire metallic cartridge. The arrival of Lefaucheux' invention coincided with the coming of great industrial revolutions on both sides of the Atlantic, and with them political and social revolutions, as well. Soon countless new types of firearms began appearing in the market. Pinfire revolvers became the requisite sidearm for many leading European military powers, and as revealed for the first time in this new book they were purchased and issued to many units during the American Civil War, both North and South. The popularity of, and adventures with pinfire revolvers by officers and soldiers during our Civil War, including such dashing cavaliers as Confederates "Stonewall" Jackson and "Jeb" Stuart, continue to inspire new legions of historians and collectors. First published in a 1983 limited printing as The Pinfire System, this volume is a result of continuing fascination with pinfire arms by the world-wide fraternity of antique gun enthusiasts. Much more than a reprint, Systeme Lefaucheux, Continuing the Study of Pinfire Cartridge Arms is in may ways an entirely new work. The reader will note scores of additions including important new historical data, documents, and photographs of guns, cartridges, and accoutrements. Author Chris Curtis' comprehensive collection of pinfire arms, along with examples from many of the leading public and private collections in America and across Europe, comprises the basis for this study. Hundreds of pinfires of all types are illustrated and discussed, ranging from the humblest single-shot pistol to the great rarities in the field. Also covered are the personalities involved in the design, development, and manufacture of pinfire arms and ammunition; plus technical data, patents, commercial sales, military contracts, markings, cartridge headstamps, and much more. The numerous varieties of pinfire arms are explored, and a rarity chart is even provided for collectors. Once relegated to a minor footnote in the long history of firearms, Systeme Lefaucheux, Continuing the Study of Pin fire Cartridge Arms now elevates these renowned guns to a position of distinction in the annals of weaponry. Here is a welcome addition to every collector's library. 2002  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. Table of Contents: - The first weapons were invented around 500,000 years ago since when they have played an undeniably significant part in shaping human history. Cultures all over the world crafted fighting blades, many of them so elaborately formed and decorated that they were as much works of art and powerful symbols of status as they were weapons of war. This beautifully presented book traces the fascinating history of daggers, dirks and bayonets through to the 21st century. From the appearance of the earliest stabbing tools of the so-named Dagger Period of 15,000 BC it describes the development of these short-edged weapons and their impact upon ancient civilizations such as the Etruscans, Egyptians and Romans. The significance of the dagger in the artistic culture of the Celtic peoples and the role of the scrimasax fighting knife as a Saxon weapon of conquest is also explored. The symbolism of the dagger as part of a knight's armoury is covered, and its importance as a civilian weapon during the Medieval and Renaissance periods as well as in 19th-century America. The book looks at the part played by fighting blades in military combat from the famous Highland dirk to 20th- century Commando knives, and traces the history of the transformation of the hand-held stabbing tool into the bayonets of World Wars I and II. This broad-ranging book examines the variety of short-edged weapons from around the world, from the Indian Katar to the Japanese Tanto. It looks at the technical and military accomplishments leading up to the present-day role of the short-edged blade as a military weapon, as well as its transformation into an object of modern art. With a comprehensive and fully illustrated weapons directory, this book will be an indispensable resource for the amateur enthusiast and professional collector alike, while the beautiful photographs of these extraordinary pieces of craftsmanship will fascinate anyone with an interest in the weapons that have shaped the world. A comprehensive history and visual directory to more than 500 sharp-edged weapons and blades from around the world, with over 600 stunning colour photographs.Presents a detailed history of the development of military daggers and bayonets from around the world, from their origins in the Stone Age through the battlefields of Europe, America and World Wars I and II on to the present day.Includes a comprehensive directory of weapons arranged by time period and geographical area, along with specifications of date, origin and length.Descriptions of the most famous and fascinating weapons include the medieval rondel, the Highland dirk, the American bowie knife, and the bayonets of World War II.Perfect for the avid collector and amateur enthusiast alike, and a superb sourcebook and reference work for military historians, curators, academics, and experts on edged weaponry of all periods. 2009

FOR WELL OVER ONE HUNDRED YEARS the sixteen-shot Henry repeating rifle has been a rare prize for collectors and students of old guns. Although the Henry rifle was the technical marvel of its age, many American military minds doubted whether the average mid-nineteenth century soldier could effectively operate it, and as a result the new rifle saw only limited purchase and use during the Civil War. Yet it quickly became a legend, and these revolutionary rifles that one could "load on Sunday and shoot all week" acquitted themselves very well on the battlefield. But very little was known about themor their brilliant but enigmatic inventor, B. Tyler Henry and even less had been written. That was due, in part, to their very limited production and the fact that the New Haven Arms Company left virtually no records behind after being taken over by Oliver F. Winchester, of subsequent rifle manufacturing fame. That is, until author Les Quick stepped in to fill the void. With the help of literally scores of other antique arms collectors and dealers, many of whom like Les had been researching, gathering serial numbers and amassing other information about Henry rifles for decades, Les Quick has produced what is arguably the definitive word on the famed Henry's Patent Repeating Rifle. You, the reader, are the beneficiary of all that record sifting, data gathering and interpretation. So, open the covers of this book... and enjoy this fascinating story.  This fine vintage advertisement for a 1959 ad for AMF Magic Triangle is in excellent condition but is slightly yellowed. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. Shortly after the American Civil War, a New York dentist-turned-firearms inventor named William H. Elliot designed a revolutionary pocket pistol to fire the .41 Short rimfire caliber metallic cartridge. At the time, it was the most powerful small handgun cartridge on the market. This compact but hard-hitting pistol was immediately embraced by riverboat gamblers, ladies of the night, messengers, travelers, shopkeepers and anyone else who needed an easily concealable, large-caliber weapon for self defense. Its novel design featured twin, over-and-under barrels that swung open from a top hinge for loading and cartridge extraction, a "spur" trigger and large, comfortable grips. This was one, but not the first, of the more than 130 firearms patents Dr. Elliot would be granted over the last half of the nineteenth century. To manufacture his new pistol, Dr. Elliot contracted with the E. Remington & Sons arms firm in upstate New York, which by 1867 had been in the gunmaking business for more than fifty years. The Remington Double Deringer, as it has become known among collectors, was sleek, simple, sturdy, effective and inexpensive. It was the right gun for its time and place, and it enjoyed the longest manufacture -- sixty-five years of virtually any firearm before or since. This book tells its story.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. The 1936 German Olympics took place at a very critical time in the 20th century and were unusual in many respects. It was the first time that television was used to broadcast a sporting event. The first torch run to light the Olympic flame was originated. Perhaps the most important Olympic film ever produced covered the summer games. It was the first real political Olympics threatened by several potential boycotts. The first fully self-contained Olympic village was constructed. It was the most elaborate Olympics staged up to that time and for several more afterwards. The largest crowd to ever watch a baseball game (100,000) saw an exhibition match between two American teams. Basketball was introduced to the Olympics. Three American competitors were removed from the team for breaking training or for criminal activities. Downhill skiing was introduced to the winter games. A Polish female sprinter was later found out to be a male. Two American sprinters were replaced on the relay team supposedly because they were Jewish. The youngest American participant was a 13-year-old diver. Germany, the host country, won the most medals, the last time a country other than the United States or the Soviet Union would do so. Several athletes such as Jesse Owens and Sonja Henie would become household names throughout the world. Many myths have grown up around the 1936 Olympics, including one that had Hitler snubbing Jesse Owens after his victory in the I00-meter dash.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. Compared to other weapons such as the ax, sword, rifle and shotgun, it is light and compact, allowing it to be carried almost anywhere deployed quickly when needed. For these reasons, throughout the centuries the handgun has endured as the best defensive weapon for most people, most of the time. In Fighting Handguns, Jeff Cooper not only takes the reader through the development of this weapon from its beginnings in mid-16th-century Europe through the various iterations of single- and double-action revolvers and semiautomatic pistols, he also discusses some important aspects of carrying and shooting a fighting handgun under combat conditions. The late Jeff Cooper was one of the true pioneers of weaponcraft in the United States. His numerous accomplishments include founder of Gunsite Ranch, editor at large of Guns & Ammo magazine, winner of the Outstanding American Handgunner award in 1995, Rangemaster Emeritus of the U.S. Practical Shooting Association and long-time member of the board of directors of the National Rifle Association.

Paladin is pleased to reissue this classic book in the field of military battle knives. Allied Military Fighting Knives chronicles in detail the background, development and variations of both common and unusual combat knives. It also provides firsthand accounts by and in-depth interviews with the men who used them in battle, including U.S. Marine Raiders; U.S. Army Rangers; U.S., Canadian and British airborne units; the legendary Gurkhas; the First Special Service Force; such clandestine outfits as the OSS and SOE; and even officers who served in the Shanghai Municipal Police with W.E. Fairbairn and E.A. Sykes. In addition to its focus on military-issue blades, the book devotes chapters to two of the leading private companies that provided knives to soldiers in all war zones - Ek and Randall. A must for historians and collectors alike.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. Table of Contents: - As the author of Soldier Of Fortune's "Battle Blades" column from 1984 to 1988, Bill Bagwell was considered both outrageous and revolutionary in his advocacy of carrying fighting knives as long as 10 inches and his firm belief that the Bowie was the most effective fighting knife ever developed. Here, you'll find all of Bagwell's classic SOF columns, plus all-new material linking his early insights with his latest conclusions. In addition to offering advice on the design criteria, concealed carry and use of large knives, this book features controversial evaluations of a variety of big battle blades, from the AK bayonet, Sykes-Fairbairn commando dagger and USMC KA-BAR to the common machete, Gurkha kukri, Japanese tanto, tomahawk, various combat folders and more.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. Modern Combat Pistols provides a comprehensive account of the development of military and police semi-automatic pistols and their ammunition from 1945 to present day. It follows on from the same authors' critically acclaimed Assault Rifle. The first part of the book looks at defensive and offensive pistols, the difference between military and police pistols, and special-purpose weapons such as silenced and underwater pistols. The history of the handgun before 1945 is described, and there is an examination both of the development of the semi-automatic pistol since 1945 and of future trends in pistol design. The second part of the book is divided up on a country-by-country basis. Each country's section starts with an historical overview of pistol development in that country before giving a description and technical data for each individual weapon. Appendices cover technical aspects of semi-automatic and ammunition design.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. In the Illustrated Manual of Sniper Skills, Mark Spicer draws on his extensive experience to reveal the secrets of his craft. Spicer's credentials are too vast to list here in their entirety, but suffice it to say that when it comes to combat, he's seen it all, and when it comes to snipers operating today, he likely had a hand in training them all. -Military Book Club This heavily illustrated manual provides a timely, in-depth review of the art of sniping in war and anti-terrorist environments. Drawing on a vast, firsthand knowledge of sniper skills, former British Army sniper and sniper instructor Mark Spicer describes the role of the sniper in peace and in war, in reconnaissance and counter-surveillance, in cities, in vehicles, at night and by day. He presents crucial information about training and equipment, judgment and positioning, details of great relevance to professional marksmen, both military and law enforcement. This comprehensive manual will also be of interest to hunters, weapons enthusiasts, competition shooters, and paintball participants. Rapala - the very name evokes quiet mornings on a mist-shrouded lake, family expeditions in a well-worn rowboat, and - best of all- the thrilling moment when a fish explodes out of the water. This richly illustrated book tells the story of a remarkable company and the iconic angling products they produce. Rapala lures are now sold in 140 countries and are more world-record fish than any other lure. It is the dominant company in a hugely popular sport enjoyed by 44 million recreation anglers in the U.S. alone - more people than play golf or tennis combined.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. Here's a nice little booklet on an interesting vintage brand of American pocket knives that really hasn't received its due over the years - the Dollar Knife Co. knives produced by Schatt & Morgan. Printed on non-acidic paper stock with a nice color cover, this booklet is a revised and expanded version of an important article with the same title, published in the October, 2004 issue of KNIFE WORLD. That piece presented to the collecting world a great deal of new information on the Dollar Knife brand, which had previously been thought to be simply a line of inexpensive knives with celluloid handles and celluloid shields produced and offered by Schatt & Morgan. Krauss and Clarks research revealed there to be much more to the story: three phases of Dollar Knife companies stretching from Oklahoma City to Atlanta to Titusville, Pennsylvania, home of the firm that made them all. The notion of all or even some of the knives having celluloid shields was challenged, and the research to back it up well presented. This is the sort of quality research that continues to move knife collecting away from the land of flea market horders, further towards the category of well-studied antiques. Though the text is not substantially different than that previously published, anyone interested in the subject will find this booklet well worth the small price tag. For one, the format is more conveniently accessed; and the bright white paper allows the photographs to be printed at a higher resolution for better clarity. It also fits conveniently on the bookshelf, for ready reference or casual reading. If you like the classic knives by Schatt and Morgan, or their successor Queen Cutlery, its an informative and enjoyable read.

These companies produced a wealth of items that are now eagerly sought after by collectors. Everything from vintage brand-specific clothing to advertising items, dealer signs, oil containers, snowmobile board games, snowmobile cuff links, and a host of other memorabilia. Bogdan, in his late 80s and still at his workbench, is the son of Polish immigrants who wound up in Nashua, N.H. where as a boy he learned to fish and hunt, and as a just-married young man with a prodigious work ethic and unusual manual dexterity decided that there would be a market for meticulously-crafted Atlantic salmon reels. For decades, Bogdan's superb reels which are expensive have been cherished by their owners who often had to wait years before their creator could assemble them in his little shop. Bogdan's decision to focus on Atlantic salmon fly reels made all the difference, although he and his son Steve do produce models for trout and steelhead. Atlantic salmon fly fishers are inordinately fond of their sport, and for more than a century most of the best salmon waters of the world have been controlled by the wealthy and influential. Hilyard's lavishly-illustrated account reveals how such people came to crave and purchase Bogdan reels, and how, after meeting the maker of those reels who is also a superb fly fisherman and a helpful and gentlemanly streamside companion, they began inviting him to fish their own holdings. Hilyard, him-self a passionate pursuer of Atlantic salmon, both sea-run and landlocked, devotes a lot of space to Bogdan flogging far-away salmon pools, testimony to the rewards of the unrelenting pursuit of excellence.

The bamboo fly rod still represents the pinnacle of the fly-fishing art; its apparent simplicity and delicacy belie the craftsmanship and strength that are the hallmarks of all great rods. A growing number of people have tried to learn the art of making bamboo rods from a shrinking number of secretive craftsmen. The revised and expanded Handcrafting Bamboo Fly Rods is the definitive reference for beginners and experts alike. Wayne Cattanach begins by explaining the qualities that distinguish bamboo from all other materials: It has a tensile strength akin to steel, yet it is very light. He describes the process that will take anyone from lengths of hard, raw bamboo to a beautiful finished rod with clear, step-by-step instructions and illustrations, including how to find the best supplies; select tools and materials; make heat treaters and binders; cut culms; straighten bamboo strips; plane and stagger strips; bind strips; apply finishes; mount the reel seat, ferrules, and tip-top; and much more. This is surely the most thorough book available for those who wish to make and fish with their own bamboo fly rods.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. This book is intended as an aid for those who wish to pursue the art of cane-rod making or repairing. The reader will find a wealth of information regarding the methods, devices, and techniques that can only be learned by testing, trial and error. Many tips are given to guide the rod-maker in how to accomplish a particular and/or unusually difficult task. While a number of books and references are available for the basics of rod building, this book focuses on specific information and problem solving. The tips include: heat treating and moisture control; color toning; how to use and build equipment; ferrules; grips; rod wrapping, finishing and gluing; tapers; and more. Of special interest is an often sought after collection of nearly 300 rod tapers by many famous rod builders.  Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas.
