Tools: Mechanical

What's New in the Collector's Showcase of Tools: Mechanical?
The Most Recent Additions to This Category are First!
This is a very nice industrial tool catalog from the 1930's era! It is marked on the front cover "INDUSTRIAL SUPPLIES J.A. WILLIAMS COMPANY PITTSBURGH PA.". There is no copyright date in this catalog that we could find, so we compared some of the tools with other dated catalogs to determine that it was printed around the mid-1930's. This catalog has listings as a distributor for the following manufacturers: Carborundum, Stanley Tools, Lufkin, Millers Falls, Billings & Spencer, Proto, Remington, Disston, Delta, Crescent, Wiss, Ames, Union Die Sets, Black & Decker, Nicholson, Red Edge Shovels, and several other less known makers. This is a 9 x 11 catalog with 408 clean pages, a faux leather cover in very nice condition with minor corner wear, good tight binding, no missing pages. One date penciled on the front inside cover, no other hand writing or scribbling noted. There is some minor dirt smudges on the page edges, but very good overall. It is profusely illustrated, on good heavy paper pages. A very nice catalog overall!  This is a rarely seen push drill with a hollow pistol grip shaped hardwood handle that has a spring loaded flip cap, and a tube area inside the handle for drill point storage. There is 7 different drill bits or points included, the 1/16" size is missing, all in good working order, sharp and ready to use. The shank is marked "WARDS MASTER QUALITY PAT. PENDING". The shank end on these is shaped like a +, to fit the matching shaped jaws on the thread screw type chuck. The drill points are of the Millers Falls and Goodell-Pratt type, and most likely, this tool was made by one or the other company for Montgomery Wards retail stores. The drive system works like the well known Yankee brand push drills, you push in on the work piece, and the drill bit turns clockwise, then release that same pressure, and it spring back into the original position. The handle is solid, no cracks, fits tightly to the main shaft, and has a good working flip latch. We note some scratch and wear on the handle, and it appears to be made of fruit wood. The metal is nickel plated, and about 1/2 is still intact, with some brass showing through in some places. The drill measures 10.5" long overall, and has about 2" of travel on the spiral system. A very rare push drill, the first we have seen with the wood handle, others were made later, but had a plastic handle. Nice!  This is a nice old steel 12", three fold folding ruler. It is marked "THE L.S. STARRETT CO. ATHOL MASS. U.S.A." on one side, and "THE TRAVELERS LEADS IN LIABILITY INSURANCE" on the other side. It does have some pitting and staining on it, but most of the inch graduations can be seen, and the two joints are still snug as they should be. Other than the pitting on it, no damage, and no rust on it now. A hard to find Starrett made, advertising rule!  This is a three piece group sold together as a set. The Square and the center head are both in very good condition, they have the 95%+ paint and good clean, nicely ground precision surfaces. The square is most likely a new square from the 1970's as it is a dark blue textured paint, where the center head is a black textured paint. The square head is about 98% like new, with over 98% paint intact, a good working level and scribe that stores in a hole in the head, very nice overall, near mint condition. The center head is marked "HARDENED PATENT 2,085,461", and is in about 90% like new condition with about 90% paint intact, and one past owner's intials very lightly engraved on it. The rule is marked Brown & Sharpe Mfg., TEMPERED No.4, 12" long, it has no owner's name or marks on it. The blade is in good condition with some minor staining on about 5% of it's surface, no pitting, good sharp edges and corners. A very nice clean set.

J. A. Williams Industrial Tools Catalog 1 $75.00

Wards Master Push Drill Pistol Grip Wood $90.00

Starrett Advertising Steel Folding Rule $15.00

Brown & Sharpe Combination Square Set 12 $60.00

This is a very nice, clean 8.5" long alligator wrench stamped "J O". The jaw serrations are at angle to the other surfaces of the wrench, making it a bit different from most alligator wrenches. The finish on this one is very smooth, and it is made of very good cast steel, with a hang hole near the end of the handle. Very nice antique wrench with no maker's name on it, but very good quality! No rust, or pitting, no damage, good jaw serrations! Unique!  This is a rare maker's marked wrench, antique buggy or machinery type wrenches. It is marked in raised cast lettering "QUAKER CITY IRON WORKS 1329" on the handle section. The wrench has one square box wrench size 1/2", and that socket shaped end is 1" deep. The wrench has some pitting on it, but is not rusty, not damaged, some minor dings, the handle is almost perfectly straight, in good condition overall. Although the name is on this wrench, we don't know what company this was as no location is given, but most likely from the New England states area, and my guess would be Philadelphia PA.. Unique!  Offering both of these hard to find, antique buggy or machinery type wrenches for one price. The are basically identical, marked in raised cast lettering "70 TO 83" on the handle section. The wrench has two sizes at the large opened end, and one size at the small end. The size is on the small end is .75", and at the large end is .98" and 1.17" width. Each wrench weighs .75 pounds, and is 10" long overall. It was most likely made to fit a specific machine, and most likely for square type nuts or bolt heads due to the deep inset of the slots. The wrenches are basically the same, but one is spread open on the small end to about .8" (should be 3/4"), but both are very clean, not rusty, and not cracked, both have a cast hanging hole in the handle. Unique!  This is a hard to find, antique linesman's pole hardware wrench marked in raised cast lettering "LC-25-A" on the handle section. The wrench has two sizes at the large opened end, and three sizes at the small end. The sizes is on the small end are .54", .63", and .82", and at the large end is .93" and 1.13" width. The wrench weighs 2 pounds, and is 13" long overall. It was most likely made to fit a specific machine, and most likely for square type nuts or bolt heads due to the deep inset of the slots. The wrench has some dings on it, but is very clean, not rusty, and not cracked. This wrench was used by bell system linemen before the adjustable wrench was considered to be a better alternative. Unique! We did find this one in the Schulz's Wrench book as No. 1036.

This is a hard to find stubby ratchet screwdriver marked "YANKEE NO. 12 NORTH BROS. MFG. CO. PHILA PA. U.S.A. PAT.NOV.2.97-JAN.22.01". on the handle ferrule area opposite the selector switch. Features forward, reverse and lock positions on the selector. This type screwdriver has the non-removable tip that is about 1.0" long, and the screwdriver is 5.6" long overall. In very good condition overall with 90% wood handle paint intact, no rust, a few small dings on the handle wood, a very good steel tip, good++ working condition, tip in good condition. A hard to find, early Yankee screwdriver in top used condition!

This is a nice quality made 4 pound, double faced striking hammer, in good used condition. The head is 6.3" long x 2" thick at the widest point, the striking end are about 1.2" diameter, and the handle is 14" long. The head has some pitting on it, but is not rusty, the striking faces show little or no sign of use. The hardwood handle is in very good shape overall, no cracks, fits tightly. Good for Blacksmith, drilling, and cold chisel work!  This is a nice quality made Depth micrometer head with .001" graduation, and a standard thimble. It is marked "THE L.S. STARRETT CO. SPECIAL" on the thimble. The spindle size is .235" diameter, the smaller diameter next to the spindle is .100" for a distance of .5". Designed to fit Starrett standard micrometers or micrometer heads that have the .235" diameter spindle clearance hole in them. We tried this head in a No. 230 Starrett micrometer, and it will work, but is not the correct length (spindle) for correct calibration, so we advise, if you used it in a outside micrometer, to you will need to take the length into account. We gauged .63" when the micrometer showed a 1.00" reading. So, it is most likely designed to be used with a Starrett micrometer head mounting base. The head is in very good condition overall, no wear noted, no signs of use.

Please take a few minutes to look for other machinist tools you may be looking for, as we have several hundred to choose from, both antique, and newer. We discount shipping on multi-item orders!

This is a nice group of three different, and unusual shaped cast steel cold chisels, the one with the curved and flared end is marked "DELAWARE-USA 6" on the handle, the others are not marked by the maker. The Delaware has little serations at the V shaped end, appears to have been made that way, and it is 9" long x 1.2" wide at the widest point, and .17" thick. The longest is the bend neck type, it is 10" long x .62" wide x .12 thick on the blade. The short one is 7.4" x 1.2" wide x .09" thick with a little taper to the blade thickness, and a radius on one side of the blade. All are used, but in good shape, not damaged, some minor wear, no rust, a little pitting here and their, not bad. All appear to be very good quality steel. All three for the price!

This is a new old stock, vintage, adjustable wrench, marked "FORGED ALLOY STEEL-UTICA-STEEL 91-8 UTICA TOOLS U.S.A." on the handle. This wrench is 8" long overall. It's in like new condition! A top quality vintage wrench!  This is a quality tool set marked "YANKEE HANDYMAN SCREWDRIVERS NO. 33H, 133H, 233H, SET OF 3 DRILL POINTS, COUNTERSINK 5/32 BIT FOR SMALL SCREWS 1941 NORTH BROTHERS MFG. CO. PHILADELPHIA DIVISION OF STANLEY TOOLS" on the red, black and white label on the card type advertising packet. The card is in good condition overall, it is very rare, and to date we have not seen any other North Brothers Div. of Stanley tools with an earlier date then 1947, which has been the official date when the North Brothers ownership was handed over to Stanley. There are 3 new drill bits in the plastic tube that has a metal cap, and all the mentioned items above are in the set as pictured, to fit the smallest Yankee brand chucks, including the ones mentioned on the card and above. This set will also fit the No. 135, and several other Craftsman, Millers Falls, and Greenlee models that used the YANKEE brand tooling. All of the shanks in this set measure .218" diameter, the smallest size shank Yankee offered of the three different sizes. This is a very rare Handyman advertising card with tools, and it in very good condition overall! The first one of it's type we have seen in over 10 years!  This is a nice clean, used, 2"-12.5 inch capacity inside micrometer, it is marked "BROWN & SHARPE MFG. CO. PROVIDENCE R.I. 261". It .001" graduations up to .500". There are small precision V grooves cut in each of the rods, that the male V on the micrometer threaded collet fits into, to size the rod in the appropriate position, and then the nut at the end of the rod is for calibration. There is a calibration wrench supplied, along with a height gage (look a bit like a tiny surface gage) also supplied. The height gage is also marked "BROWN & SHARPE MFG. CO. PROVIDENCE R.I." and is in the old 1930's catalog as No. 598. It has a collet the same diameter as the inside micrometer in this set, and is design to be used with the No. 260, or 261 models. All these precision tools are in very good working order, very good straight rods, the micrometer in great shape with very little wear, and the height gage base in very good shape with a little pitting noted around the base of the collet holder, with not effect use, otherwise near mint condition (a pretty rare little tool!). This has no owner's names and or marks on any of it. It has been inspected, and is properly calibrated. A good old machinist tool! A rare find! Don't miss out!  This is a nice clean, used, 2-3 inch micrometer is marked with an early patent date of "JULY 3, 1923". It is also marked "BROWN & SHARPE MFG. CO. PROVIDENCE R.I. 63 2-3 LBS", and has the decimal equivalent markings as well. It has .0001, and .001" graduations. The friction brake is not working, doesn't effect normal use, just will not lock. It's in great shape with very little wear, over 75% of the original paint intact. This has no owner's names and or marks on it. It has been inspect, and is properly calibrated. A good old machinist tool!

Just like a new one, very nice condition!  This is a very nice, clean, 3/8 Pipe reamer marked "MORSE TWIST DRILL & M. CO. 3/8". It is in very good condition, sharp, ready to use, with the tapered shank to fit most braces and two jaw breast drills! Measure 4.25" long, tapers from .28" to .44" over 2" fluted length. H.S.", one is marked "SP82-7 7/16x7/32" and the other is marked "SP82-17 .497x17/64", both are in fine condition, appear to be new old stock! Both are a bit over 4.5" long.   This is a very nice, clean, 1-2" outside micrometer with .0001 graduations. It is marked "BROWN & SHARPE MFG. CO. PROVIDENCE R.I. U.S.A. NO. 48 PAT. DEC. 30, 1902". The fractional equivalents are also marked neatly on both side of the frame. As you can see in the pictures there is no rust, and no past owner's marks, some minor wear and scratches noted. This micrometer features the .0001" graduation scale, and the adjustable brake. The calibration checks out good, the brake works, and will snug the spindle, but no as tightly as many modern day micrometers will. A true antique machinist tool! Over 100 years old, and still in nice shape!

This is a nice clean drill and tap drill size gauge marked "T.F. WELCH BOSTON" on one side, and "TAP DRILL SIZES" on the back side. It has numbers marked from 0-60 on the front side, and 2-56 to 14-20 on the back side also. T.F. WELCH BOSTON is a rather rare name to see on this type of gauge, the more common was the Starrett brand. This one is 1.7 x 5.3" long, and is in good++ condition with some minor wear, and scratches noted, no rust, no pitting, and no past owner's names. A truly collectible machinist tool!  This is a very nice, clean, single speed hand drill marked "YANKEE NO. 1431 NORTH BROS. MFG. CO. PHILA. PA. U.S.A." on the handle ferrule. This particular design is one of the smoothest of the many single speed hand drill made, since it's design includes the double gears on the main shaft, balancing any play there could have been in the drilling motion. This drill is in great shape with about 70% original paint intact, and about 85% nickel plating intact. The 0-9/32" diameter capacity, 3 jaw chuck, is in good working order as well, and is also marked with the YANKEE brand name and a patent date. This drill measures 9.25" long overall, and is not designed to have a side handle. Both hardwood handle and knob on the crank are in great shape, nice smooth natural type finish. All the shafts and gears are in very good shape, very smooth operation. A very nice tool overall!  This is a very nice 5" outside spring caliper, with early patent dates on it! It is marked "THE L.S.S. CO. ATHOL MASS. PAT. JUNE 2.85", and "PAT. JAN. 30 1900" on the spring nut, or speed nut. Since is is marked with "THE" before the Starrett name, this one was made after 1909, but not very long after, as the patent dates were not on the calipers in the 1920's era. The spring nut allows the user to simply pull or push the nut along the threaded rod, once the spring pressure of the caliper is released, making for fast adjustments. With the pressure on the nut, it works just like a normal nut would, turn it for fine adjustment. Works good too! This caliper is in about 97% like new condition, no rust, damage, or past owner's names or marks on it! A few minor edge dings noted, very nice! The Yankee patern, refers to the extra thick upper legs of the caliper, very study!  I've seen only a few of these over the years, and they still remain a sought after precision indicator! The indicator has been checked and verified to be in good working order, no wear noted, It is clearly marked "THE L.S. STARRETT CO. ATHOL MASS. U.S.A. No. 64" on the indicator. This model is design to attach to a surface gauge round rod, or even a lathe tool, as is basically has large, sturdy washer like, clamp jaws that squeeze the rod tightly and hold the indicator in place just fine. In this case is is attached to a piece of steel stock about tool post size. This is hard to find model from the 1920's-50's era!

This is a good clean, used 3" toolmaker's inside caliper marked "STARRETT". It is the 3" size, about 3.7" long overall. This caliper is in good shape, with very clean measuring tips, very good spring and joint, adjustment nuts and threads, no rust, some minor dings noted on the legs, none effect use, and we note the ball shaped nut missing from the end of the threaded rod. We note no owner's marks. This caliper is in very good, straight, useable condition, with a few minor flaws, but in a hard to find smaller size.  This is a very hard to find, late 1800's era inside caliper marked "L.S. STARRETT ATHOL MASS. PAT. APL'D FOR". It is the 8" size, about 8.50" long overall. This caliper is in fine shape, with very clean measuring tips, very good joint, adjustment nuts and threads, no rust, or damage, very nice polished finish with only minor discoloration noted. We note two initials (H.T.) on the adjustable firm joint nut, neatly stamped. In 1909 L.S. STARRETT CO. was change to "THE L.S. STARRETT CO.". This is clearly stated in most all the Starrett catalogs from 1909 to the 1940's era. We also note that the name change was applied in 1909 to the way all Starrett tools were marked. This tool, was made before the 1909 name change. These old Starrett calipers are nearly impossible to find from this era, and in this fine of condition!

This is a nice clean precision machinist / toolmaker's square marked "D. B. & S PROV. R.I.". The marked is that of Darling, Brown & Sharpe which became Brown & Sharpe Mfg. Co. in 1892 when Darlings interested where bought out. D. B. & S is a common mark on these 19th century precision tools made from 1866-1892. This square is 5.5 x 3.8" wide. It's in very good original condition with some minor staining, no rust or owner's names. Has been inspected, and is still accurate. A good useable square, quality made, over 100 years old!  This is a very clean lathe tool post type square drive box wrench, marked " 1/2 A", and with the Armstrong logo. It has most of it's original black paint on the handle, and is in very good condition!  This is a very nice threaded split collet adapter, like new in the original box.  This is a very nice double position vernier height or depth gauge with two scales, one 4" and one 8" capacity, either will fit into either slot. There is no maker's name on this tool, which is surprising, as it is nicely made. Graduations are in .025" on the scales, but the vernier scale on the also has graduation allowing for .001" accuracy with the combined scales. The case is 2 x 10" with felt interior, hardwood exterior, with good hinges and latches. This tool is near square enough to use as a double square as well, but is basically designed to be used are a depth gauge. A nicely made, unique tool!

The nickel plate is about 70% intact, and the handle paint is about 65%+ intact, a very tight grain separation noted, handle fits very well and is in very nice shape, other than the missing paint. The 3 position movement selector is in very good condition, as well as the 1/4" straight drive tip. The overall length is 8.5". This model has no spiral drive, and the tip is not removeable. The ratchet system works very well!  This is a hard to find stubby ratchet screwdriver marked "YANKEE NO. 12 NORTH BROS. MFG. CO. PHILA PA. U.S.A.". on the handle ferrule area opposite the selector switch. Features forward, reverse and lock positions on the selector. The handle also has an impressed "YANKEE" mark on it. A hard to find Yankee screwdriver in very good used condition!  These are new old stock .2185 / 7/32" diameter, with a Phillips screwdriver tip, for Yankee style (smallest) screwdrivers, like a No. 135, 233H, 133H, model Yankee, may fit other brand names as well that accept the Yankee style tooling with the notch and flat on the shank. The screwdriver tip is 3.25" long overall. It is marked "PAT. 250723 (PHILLIPS)-LIC 2" on the shank, so it is a No. 2PT. size. These are new old stock bits! North Brothers Yankee No. 10 Ratchet Scr $22.00

North Brothers Yankee No. 12 Ratchet Scr $38.00

Yankee Style 7 / 32 Phillips Bit Screwdriv

Starrett Combination Square Blade 6 inch $19.00

This is a very nice clean drill attachment with the 1/2" capacity, 3 jaw chuck, holds round shank drills very well! It is marked on the chuck "YANKEE NORTH BROS. MFG. CO. PHILA. PA. U.S.A. PAT. MAR.15.10", and the main shaft is marked "YANKEE NORTH BROS. MFG. NO. 1500" also. This model is designed for drilling metal pipe and other material up to about 3" in diameter, perhaps bigger with a short drill bit. It has a small lever on the side of the main casting that is a spring loaded ratchet controller, so you have a choice of clockwise, counter-clockwise, and free spinning. This system allows the chain that would be wrapped around the stock being drilled, to either press against the stock to assist with drilling pressure, or release the pressure on the drill. A great design for hand drilling metal! All the gears and threads are in very good condition, no rust, very clean! The chuck is one of the few I've seen with most of it's nickel plating still intact, very good mechanical condition. This model has the tapered end shank, for use with a brace or two jaw type breast drill. The tapered section shows some wear in terms of edge dings, but the majority of it's original shape is intact, and works just fine in all two jaw chucks we tried it in, particularly well in YANKEE brand tools. It is about 10" long overall. Very good condition, and hard to find in this nice shape!  Two antique molding or polishing tools. Both for one price! Solid iron with initials: J.N.P. on tops. Both are same size, weight but one has two indentations on top area. Some rust on them. I thought they'd make unique doorstops, paperweights, or bookends!  This is a good clean Yankee ratchet / spiral screwdriver, clearly marked "NORTH BROTHERS MFG. CO. YANKEE NO. 31A DIVISION OF STANLEY TOOLS PHILA PA. U.S.A.". Has 3 good tips, one #2 Phillips, and 2 slot bits. About 97% of the nickel plating is intact, and about 95% stain and varnish intact on the handle, a few very minor dings in the wood finish. This type spiral drill is not spring loaded (no rapid return) in the spiral area drive area, works perfectly, as from the factory.

This is a timer type indicator, push the button the gauge resets to "0", and begins the gauge speed. The indicator is in neutral while the timer is not on (it lasts about 10 seconds), so you can touch the tip to the motor shaft to begin the rotate of the indicator shaft before you begin gauging the speed by pushing the timer button. The rubber tip will come off (press fit), and you can also use the solid steel tip that is permanently attached to the indicator. The indicator is in very good condition overall, work fine when tested, very little wear, nice glass dial lens, and chrome case. Was very expensive when new! If you are interested in the larger sizes, please email us, as we may be able to get the larger socket driver adapters as well.
