The H.M.S. Wellesley was a teak 74 gun full rigged sail ship built by the East India Co. It belonged to the Royal Navy and was launched February 24, 1815 at Bombay Dockyard and saw active service in the Far East. She was renamed T.S. Cornwall in 1868, moored off Purfleet and served for awhile as a school ship for the Wellesley Nautical School. On September 24, 1940, she was severely damaged during an enemy air strike and sank. In 1948, she was raised at Tilbury-Ness and broken up. The figurehead now resides in Chatham Dockyard under her original name of Wellesley and most of her timbers were used in rebuilding the Royal Courts of Justice in London. In addition, many souvenirs were made from her timbers – candlesticks, ashtrays, rings, etc. Each souvenir was fitted with a metal plate giving details of the ship.

This small barrel was made from the timber and measures 2" high x 2" wide and 1.25" at the base. The metal plate reads: FROM THE TIMBER OF H.M.S. CORNWALL LAUNCHED BOMBAY 1815

A piece of history for the sailor who has everything! Excellent condition

The clear hard plastic display box has been opened, and has some blemishes/scratches on top, but still displayable. A very neat collectible!! Actual display box measures 9 1/2" x 3 1/2" x 4" high.
