<b>Ordinary Americans & Fashion, 1840-1900</b>

By Joan Severa. Published by Kent State University Press, 1995. Hardcover with dust jacket, large 8 3/4 x 11 1/4 format, 592 pages, index, profusely illustrated. Brand new condition.

Fashion has always been a cultivating force, and during the 19th century, a time of great change, fashion was a powerful component in the development of American society. Through dress, average individuals could step beyond class divisions and venture into the world of the elite and privileged. Beginning in 1840, with the advent of the daguerreotype, that moment could be captured for a lifetime. In Dressed for the Photographer, Joan Severa gives a visual analysis of the dress of middle class Americans from the mid to late 19th century. Using images and writings, she shows how even economically disadvantaged Americans could wear styles within a year or so of current fashion. This desire for fashion equality demonstrates that the possession of culture was more important than wealth or position in the community.

Arranging the photographs by decades, Severa examines the material culture, expectations, and socioeconomic conditions that affected the clothing choices depicted. Her depth of knowledge regarding apparel allows her to date the images with a high degree of accuracy and to point out significant details that would elude most observers. The 272 photographs included in this volume show nearly the full range of stylistic details introduced during this period. Each photograph is accompanied with a commentary in which these details are fully explored. In presenting a broad overview of common fashion, Severa gathers letters and diaries as well as photographs from various sources across the United States. She provides graphic evidence that ordinary Americans, when dressed in their finest attire, appeared very much the same as their wealthier neighbors. But upon closer examination, these photographs often reveal inconsistencies that betray the actual economic status of the sitter.

These fascinating photographs coupled with Severa's insights offer an added dimension to our understanding of 19th century Americans. Intended as an aid in dating costumes and photographs and as a guide for period costume replication, Dressed for the Photographer provides extensive information for understanding the social history and material culture of this period. It will be of interest to general readers as well as to social historians and those interested in fashion, costume, and material culture studies.

(1832-1904) Born in Upson County, Ga., he had one of the most spectacular Civil War and postbellum careers of any civilian who fought for the Confederacy. His army service began in 1861 with his election as captain of a mountaineer company from northwest Georgia called the "Raccoon Roughs," and ended at Appomattox Court House as a corps commander. In between he fought magnificently on every battlefield in which the Army of Northern Virginia participated, except when he was absent from wounds. During the battle of Sharpsburg he was wounded several times, once severely in the head, and only a bullet hole in his cap prevented him from drowning in his own blood! He was promoted to brigadier general on Nov. 1, 1862. He compiled a brilliant record in the Wilderness campaign, and in the Shenandoah Valley under General Jubal A. Early. His promotion to major general dated to rank from May 14, 1864. On the retreat from Petersburg, he was in command of 1/2 of General R.E. Lee's army. After the war Gordon returned to Georgia where he became the idol of the people of his native state. He was elected to the U.S. Senate three times and was Governor of Georgia from 1886-90. A prime organizer of the United Confederate Veterans, he was elected its first commander-in-chief and served in that position from 1890 until his death.

<u>Signature with State</u>: 7 x 3, in ink, J.B. Gordon, Ga. Very fine, large autograph.  Peter Lipman Wulf bronze sculpture The First Step c1959. Bonded bronzed measures 12. 5 x 7 inches. B 1905 D 1993. New York Times obituary Published: September 30, 1993: Peter Lipman-Wulf, a German-born sculptor who lived in the United States for nearly 50 years, died on Saturday in Hamburg, Germany. He was 88 and had homes in Manhattan and Sag Harbor, L.I. He was born in Berlin and studied at the Berlin Academy. Mr. Lipman-Wulf, who was Jewish, left Germany in 1933 when the Nazis came to power, after being dismissed from his post at the Prussian Academy in Berlin and having several sculpture commissions canceled. He lived first in Paris and then in Basel before immigrating to the United States in 1947. Bio from Peter Rose Gallery: "He was born in 1905 into a Jewish family that had converted to Christianity before his birth. His father was a well known lawyer and expected his son to follow in his foot steps. His mother was a famous artist of the period. At the age of 15 he moved to Oberammaergau in Bavaria where he apprenticed to one of the leading wood carvers of the day. He remained there for two years. He received his MBA from the Berlin State University and was expected to succeed his professor as the official State Sculptor of Berlin. He had received many prizes and had already been given several commissions of stone sculptures for the city of Berlin. In 1933 with Hitler in power he left Germany for France. He was interred in Camp des Milles in 1939 and was released in 1940. He escaped from Paris in 1942 and went to live in Switzerland with his daughter and Swiss wife. After the war he returned to Rome and finished carving the Crucifixion. In total he had given four working years to this task. Obviously the war had interrupted his work. In 1947 the French government sent the Crucifixion to South America and ultimately after much adventure the Crucifixion was sent to New York. In 1953 it was exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the director commented that, "to be in the presence of Mr. Lipman-wulf's Crucifixion is both a sobering and exalting experience."  A very rare and desirable Tiger Maple Chippendale Slant Front Secretary or Desk and Bookcase on bracket feet with beautifully paneled doors on the upper portion and four graduated drawers in the lower portion. Inside the upper and lower portions there are cubby holes and small drawers of Poplar and Pine with brass knobs, and the desk portion has a prospect door in the interior. There is a shallow blind drawer, camouflaged as molding at the base of the secretary bottom edge, and there are two candle slides with brass knobs, rare in a country piece and more typical of a high style urban desk. The strong figuring of the the Tiger Maple and its excellent warm color make for a very fine appearance. The Bookcase extends slightly beyond the desk top at the rear and appears to have been designed to accommodate a chair rail and perhaps to create deeper storage space. Probably of New England origin, circa 1780-1810. The hinges on the doors are old replacements, the replaced brass pulls are positioned in the original holes, locks and keys appear to be original. Secondary woods include Chestnut, Poplar and Pine, and there is pegged construction on both top and bottom portions. The finish appears to be an older refinish. The dimensions are 20" D. X 6' 10" H. and a rare and desirable 35-1/2" Wide.  Not a big deal but a nice little collectable without spending a lot of money is this neat little copper faced wood and type lead print block. The medal design with its American eagle Cuba veteran device will be familiar to the collector of Spanish American War items. Illustrated here with a U. S. quarter for size comparison, this nice old print block remains in excellent condition and will make a nice companion piece to lay in with other Span. Am. War collectables. <B>ALL ITEMS ARE CURRENT & AVAILABLE UNLESS MARKED SOLD!!</B> Thanks for visiting our catalog!!  All in excellent condition is this antique special purpose bottle with its <B>M. S. BURR & Co. BOSTON</B> nomenclature embossed around an eye catching 11/2 inch American Eagle seal. With the bottle is its stopper fitting for a rubber tube a feeding tip and a cleaning brush. All are original to a nicely labeled pasteboard box with an attractive American eagle graphic. The label offers directions for use and patent dates from 1859 through 1872. The box measure approximately 5 ½ x 4 x 2 ¾ inches high and is a scarce and desirable addition (this is the only example we have seen in our 40 years of paying attention and seeking out such things,) but it deserves a proper restoration where the folds have been reinforced with a modern flat Scotch type tape. (Easily removable without damage by a knowledgeable person .) Though primarily promoted by maker and patent holder M. S. Burr & Co. (see Civil War era Boston Directories) as an <I>infant</I> feeder, their especially designed bottle would surely see use in the period to aid the feeding of bedridden and invalid medical patients. A scarce specialty item seldom if ever found in the original box.
