(1821-91) Born near Mount Vernon, Indiana. He had a very diverse pre war career as a school teacher, lawyer, member of the state constitutional convention, circuit court judge, state supreme court judge, and U.S. district attorney. Upon the outbreak of the Civil War, he was commissioned colonel of the 24th Indiana Infantry. He led his regiment in the bloody battle of Shiloh and was awarded a brigadier general's star for his gallantry. Later that year he commanded a division in Arkansas under General Samuel R. Curtis, and a division of General John McClernand's 13th Corps in the Vicksburg campaign. His division played a prominent role in the battle of Champion's Hill. During the early part of the Atlanta campaign, he commanded a division in the 23rd Corps. He was promoted to brevet major general, July 4, 1864. Afterwards he commanded the District of Indiana and was put in charge of the recruitment of 10,000 new troops which he accomplished by signing up "unmarried" men only. These recruits became known as "Hovey's Babies." Served as U.S. Minister to Peru, 1865-70, and later as U.S. Congressman, and Governor of Indiana.

During the Mexican War, he was brevetted major and lieutenant colonel for gallantry at Palo Alto and Resaca de la Palma. At the outbreak of the Civil War he was commissioned major general of Pennsylvania Volunteers and commanded the "Pennsylvania Reserves" as a division of the Army of the Potomac. He planned the operation against Dranesville, Va. in December 1861, and during the Peninsular campaign he formed the advance of Porter's 5th Corps as they gallantly opposed the assault of A.P. Hill's Confederates across the Chickahominy. A few days later, on June 30, 1862, he was captured at the battle of Glendale. Confined in Libby Prison, Richmond, until August 18, 1862, he was paroled and exchanged for Confederate General Simon B. Buckner who had been taken prisoner at Fort Donelson. His health broken, he retired in March 1863.

(1824-87) A descendant of Puritan ancestors who had fought in every war in which American people had been engaged, was born in Greenfield, Massachusetts. He graduated from West Point in the class of 1845, and won the brevets of 1st lieutenant and captain during the Mexican War. Early in 1861, Stone, under orders from General Winfield Scott, served as inspector general of the District of Columbia and secured the capital and the personal safety of President elect Abraham Lincoln. Lincoln came to trust Stone implicitly. He commanded a brigade during the 1st battle of Bull Run, and a division at Ball's Bluff. Made a scapegoat for the Union debacle at Ball's Bluff, the Radicals in Congress who already disliked Stone because of his views on slavery, clammered for his removal. On Feb. 8, 1862, at midnight, without charges being then or ever preferred, Stone was arrested and subsequently confined for 189 days in Forts Lafayette and Hamilton. He was grudingly released on August 6th without reparation or even acknowledgement of error. Later requested by General Nathaniel P. Banks, he served with gallantry at Port Hudson and in the Red River campaign. After the war he served 13 years as chief of staff of the Army of the Khedive of Egypt, where he was greatly distinguished.

(1817-93) Graduated #16 in the West Point class of 1837. He served in the Florida War and in the Adjutant General's Office, when on Mar. 7, 1861, he was named General Winfield Scott's chief of staff. He later served most of the Civil War as Assistant Adjutant General of the U.S. Army. Townsend was one of a select few who were chosen to accompany the body of the slain President Abraham Lincoln back to Springfield, Illinois for burial. It was General Townsend, and Admiral Charles H. Davis, who were photographed with the open coffin of Lincoln, the only known photo of Lincoln in death.

(1831-74) A nephew of Union General Daniel Tyler, he graduated from West Point in 1853, and joined the artillery branch of the service. In 1861 he was a spectator at the bombardment of Fort Sumter being a member of the expedition that was sent to relieve the fort. He later saw yeoman service in McClellan's 1862 Virginia Peninsular campaign, in the battle of Fredericksburg he commanded the artillery of Hooker's "Center Grand Division," and he was in charge of the Artillery Reserve at Chancellorsville. At Gettysburg his 130 guns pounded George E. Pickett's advancing Confederate columns as they attempted to storm Cemetery Ridge on July 3, 1863. Tyler commanded a brigade of Gibbon's division, 2nd corps at Spotsylvania, and at Cold Harbor he was cited for great gallantry and was struck in the ankle by a ball which not only lamed him permanently but brought about his death a decade later. By the end of the war Tyler was breveted major general in the Regular Army.

(1825-1902) Graduated in the West Point class of 1847. He was immediately sent to Mexico City and was stationed there during its occupation. Following routine frontier duty he resigned his commission in 1853 to engage in civil engineering and the next year was appointed state topographical engineer of New Jersey. For a time he was also chief engineer of New York City's Central Park, but his plan for development of the park was ultimately rejected. In 1860, he became chief engineer of Prospect Park in Brooklyn. He was the author of an engineering book, "Handbook for Active Service," published in 1861, which was not only read in the North but was used in Richmond by young Confederate officers. At the outbreak of the Civil War he was appointed captain in the 7th New York Militia and spent the early months of the war in the Washington defenses. On Aug. 17, 1861, he was commissioned brigadier general, U.S. Volunteers. In the expedition which effected the reduction of Fort Pulaski on the Savannah River, in April 1862, Viele won high praise for his incessant watchfulness and ardous labors. After the capture of Norfolk, Va., in May 1862, he served as military governor until October, 1863, when he was transferred to direct the draft in northern Ohio. He resigned on October 20, 1863, and returned to his engineering practice in New York. Viele had a most distinguished postbellum career, serving as New York City Park Commissioner, and as a Democratic Congressman.

In the field, Va., Nov. 26th, 1864

Dear Ruth,

As my thoughts are almost constantly upon you when not occupied by my daily duties, I feel it a relief to unburden them by the aid of the pen. I fancy I can see you now this very afternoon sitting by the fire reading while Emily is sitting on your lap, or standing by your side bothering you. Your Ma is smoking & your Pa is either reading some war or political news, or thinking of the uncommon large price Abe got for his butter. How I wish I could drop in upon you suddenly & surprise you. It seems almost an age since I was at your house, and when I think that over eight long months must pass before I can again greet you in person it makes me almost melancholy. Your kind letter of the 18th was duly rec’d and I have read it over & over again. Oh! Ruth! The sentiments you express give me the assurance that I have indeed something to exert myself for your love is the star of my hope, and though I should doubtless feel happier to be near you, yet my confidence in your unalterable affection gives me a refreshing ease of mind that enables me to attend to my duties with a will. I do not think of getting another furlough while my time is out. You will please excuse this poor writing for I have got the rheumatism so bad that I can scarcely write at all. Give my love to your Pa & Ma and be assured that you have my whole heart. I remain yours with the truest affection.

It measures 12 inches across the handle bu 10 inches and stands 7 inches tall. Condition is very good. There is a tiny chip on the edge of the domed lid, hard to find a very small. Wood Salvaged From The C.S.S. Virginia, Also Known As The Merrimack

The C.S.S. Virginia fought the Federal Ironclad U.S.S. Monitor, in the first ever duel between ironclad warships, on March 9, 1862, at Hampton Roads, Virginia

The CSS Virginia was the first steam-powered ironclad warship of the Confederate States Navy, built during the first year of the American Civil War; she was constructed as a casemate ironclad using the raised and cut down hull of the scuttled USS Merrimack. Virginia was one of the participants in the Battle of Hampton Roads, opposing the Union's USS Monitor in March, 1862. The battle is chiefly significant in naval history as the first battle between ironclads. Prior to that encounter on March 9th, the Virginia had sunk the Cumberland and the Congress on the previous day before the arrival of the Monitor. The fight between the two ironclads was basically a draw and the Virginia moved back into her port. With the capture of Norfolk, her Captain Catesby ap Roger Jones was ordered to destroy her rather than allow her to be captured which he did on May 11th, 1862 after her guns had been removed for future use. Starting around 1883, numerous souvenirs, made from recently salvaged iron and wood raised from Virginia's sunken hulk, found a ready and willing market among eastern seaboard residents who remembered the historic first battle between ironclads. Known examples still exist today, being held in both public and private collections, rarely coming up for public auction. The specimen of wood from the Virginia in this display came from an old collection of relics including those of the Virginia. 11 x 14, double matted in gray and red. Comes with certificate of authenticity.

Halt in the field near Warrenton, Va., July 25, 1863, Saturday, 5 P.M.

My Dear Mosher,

We arrived here after one of the most disturbing marches I ever have experienced. Since I wrote you last we marched to White Plains, a very hot & dusty tramp. We remained there about a day & left as a rear guard to the Sixth Corps wagons last night. We marched all night & are now halting along the road where we have been for two hours waiting for the balance of our brigade to come up, who are in the rear. I think we will have some rest & some chance to recuperate our exhausted condition before we resume any active service, unless the latter is forced upon us. I wrote to Maggie & sent the letter by Capt. Moss. I wrote the other day, but do not suppose the letter will reach you before this letter, as I expect they will all be mailed at the same time. I have written in full lately specifying my numerous pressing wants. Please have them attended to & get them forwarded by every means in your power. Try Capt. Moss, Sergt. West & Corporal Lare. I have given you the address of West & Lare & if you have them not, you can get them from Capt. Moss, the pistol & belt by Sergt. West & the repaired sword & scabbard by Corp. Lare. I wish you would get from Taylor, Druggist, Chestnut at 10th, 5 bottles of cholera pills price $1 & send them by Lare. In regard to the pistol, the price $16 included I think 100 or 50 rounds of cartridges & some tools. You may get these & keep them for me. I do not want them now. I am terribly hard up for money having not received any from home as yet. We have not had a mail for over two weeks, but expect I will have quite a batch when it does come. I have written at different times for two outer shirts & a pair of drawers & some knit stockings, pocket knife, small pair of scissors, two small compasses, a war map, &c.

Sunday, 10 A.M. in camp: Today I intend writing to M in Exchange Place, below Chestnut, in reference to two pair of boots that I have recently bought of him, both pair having turned out miserably. Paul can go down & ask him if he got my letter & find out what he says. If he should make me a pair you can try & send them to me by any opportunity. I am not particularly in want of them at present. I might be able to get a pair of Govt. shoes, but in these days of delay & mismangement in Quartermaster & Commissary Dept. it is a wonder half the army is not without clothes or half starved to death....and an officer is dependent upon the whims of the Commissary to get his supplies and then in the infantry, for instance in our case, always the stock comprises nothing but hard tack, coffee & sugar. This is what I have lived on for ten days past & fighting & marching for your country under such circumstances in such warm weather as this.

Killed in Atlanta campaign!

(1828-64) Graduated #1 in the West Point class of 1853, a class which included Philip H. Sheridan and John Bell Hood. Eleven years after their graduation, now Confederate general Hood opposed McPherson before Atlanta, and Hood's battle order would result in the death of his old classmate. By the fall of 1862, McPherson had risen to rank of major general. He saw service at Forts Henry and Donelson, Shiloh, Corinth and Vicksburg. On March 26, 1864, he was given command of the Army of the Tennessee which he led in the subsequent campaign in northern Georgia. McPherson was killed before Atlanta on July 22, 1864. General William T. Sherman's tears rolled through his beard and down on the floor when he viewed the dead body of his friend laid upon a door torn from its hinges and improvised as a bier.

(1822-96) Born in Somerville, New Jersey, he graduated from Yale, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1846, and commenced practice in Newark, N.J. He served as a general of New Jersey troops, and led the 4th Division in General Irvin McDowell's army with distinction at the 1st battle of Bull Run. He received special commendation from General McDowell for his zeal and efficiency in commanding the division "during the advance on Manassas Junction," McDowell adding that his efforts were of "great service to the army and the people." Fort Runyon, constructed in northern Virginia to protect Washington, D.C., was named in his honor. He was appointed major general in 1863, and put in command of all troops in the New Jersey National Guard, serving in this position until 1873. He also served as the mayor of Newark, N.J., 1864-66. In 1893, he was appointed U.S. Ambassador to Germany.

U.S. Senator From Massachusetts

(1811-74) After graduating from Harvard, he became a lawyer. A staunch abolitionist, he was violently opposed to the extension of slave territory, and was elected Senator in 1851 on this ticket. In 1856 he delivered an invective laden speech called "The Crime Against Kansas" in which he insulted a South Carolina senator who was not present. Two days later, Representative Preston Brooks, of S.C., a relative of the reviled man, attacked Sumner viciously with a cane. Sumner did not recover for three years, although he continued to hold his Senate seat. After secession he refused to let the Senate consider a compromise between the sections and constantly urged emancipation and equal rights for negroes. He was one of the people in the room when President Lincoln died. Although he had supported Lincoln, he was one of the leaders in the impeachment proceedings against President Andrew Johnson.
