With a title page stating Schloss’s English Bijou Almanac for 1839. - Poetically Illustrated by L.E.L. (Letitia Landon) London this rare miniature volume offers 64 pages with portraits and poetic utterances with respect to Victoria, Wellington, Sir Lawrence, Pasta and Beethoven. The miniature also contains a calendar for 1839 with important dates annotated and a list of royal birthdays along with European sovereigns, Queen’s Ministers and Ladies of the Court. To print this work all 64 pages were engraved on a single steel sheet, then transferred to a lithographic stone for printing. Tinier and more finely printed than its peers in England or on the Continent, the English Bijou received rave reviews from the contemporary press. All in excellent original condition with no condition issues this rare offering is bound in fine morocco with gilt stamping, matching morocco inner wrapper and gilt embellished outer slipcase titled THE ENGLISH BIJOU 1839 Shown here with a quarter for size comparison the outer slip case measures approximately 11/16 X 7/8 X 5/16 of an inch thick and the tiny 64 page volume itself measuring a mere 9/16 X ¾ X 3/16 of an inch thick. See all illustrations for best description. Little need be said about this landmark Civil War documentary except to advise that this set of five volumes is complete and in nice condition. From our own library as like so many historians we continue to make room and upgrade to DVD format. A good opportunity to acquire an inexpensive copy for the old summer cottage or spare room VCR, we have watched this 1st edition with pride as we appear in the credits and remember a much younger Ken Burns as he energetically moved his, in those days, massive bug eyed close-up video camera from one subject in our Civil War photography collection to another. That now classic Ken Burns technique of panning across period stills and his exuberance for the subject would produce a breakthrough. Now established as the best of American documentary film makers in several subjects, this pioneer work is a must see for any serious Civil War historian. ALL ITEMS ARE CURRENT & AVAILABLE UNLESS MARKED SOLD!! Thanks for visiting our catalog!!

(1808-75) Congressman, Senator and Governor of Tennessee. He was nominated and elected vice president on the Union Republican ticket in 1864. Upon Abraham Lincoln's assassination in April 1865, he became our 17th president and resolved to follow Lincoln's plans for reconstruction without bitterness or malice. His reconstruction plan clashed drastically with that of the Radical Republicans in congress, and Johnson's term was one humiliation after another, culminating on Feb. 24, 1868 with a resolution of impeachment against him. This failed by one vote to pass, and he served out his term.

His second term in the White House was cut short when he became the first American President to be assassinated. Fort Richardson, [Va.], Feb. 27th, 1864

Dear Minnie,

It is with joy that I now seat myself to write you these few lines. I am well. I hope this may find you the same. I wrote you a letter yesterday. I directed it to Father for I put in $25 dollars for you. I directed it to him for I thought it would be more apt to get to you Minnie. I have had so much to do lately. I have not done as I ought to have done in writing, but I have got things now so that I shall write again. I have been marketing today. I bought 60 lbs. butter & a ½ barrel of pickles and 75 lbs cheese and that won’t last more than 3 weeks. I also got me a lamp and some oil so as to have better light to write by. We do not have any news here except that the story is that the War Department has concluded to pay the soldiers $16 a month. I hope it is so. I wrote to Capt. Beach yesterday and told him that he told me if I counted on the quota of the town that he would give me $100. I also told him to pay whatever he did to Father. I cannot think of any more to write so I will close by sending my love to all.

I remain your true friend,

Edgar B. Bennett

(1818-1885) Graduated in the West Point class of 1838. From 1841 to 1845 he taught tactics at the U.S. Military Academy and many of the students he taught went on to become Confederate generals who haunted him on the battlefields of the Civil War. He was awarded the rank of brevet captain for gallantry at the battle of Buena Vista during the Mexican War. He was appointed brigadier general May 14, 1861. By July, political pressure demanded an advance by his half trained army on the Rebels under the command of General P.G.T. Beauregard at Manassas Junction, where the railroad from Richmond to Alexandria met the line from the Shenandoah Valley. The resulting Union disaster at the 1st battle of Bull Run stemmed as much from misfortune as ineptitude although on paper McDowell had a good plan, but wasn't able to inspire his officers or troops. He later commanded a corps of the Army of the Potomac which was detached to protect Washington, and in the 2nd battle of Bull Run he commanded the 3rd Corps. On July 1, 1864, he was assigned to command the Department of the Pacific.

(1839-1876) Graduated from West Point in 1861. He was destined to become one of the most celebrated, yet controversial figures in all of American military history. Custer was brave, dashing and enterprising. He served on the staffs of Generals George B. McClellan and Alfred Pleasanton until the spring of 1863, distinguishing himself on dozens of occasions. On June 29, 1863, he jumped rank from 1st Lieutenant to Brigadier General and was assigned command of a cavalry brigade under Gen. H. Judson Kilpatrick which he led with distinction in the Gettysburg campaign. From then until the end of the war he fought with the utmost distinction in all of the cavalry battles of the Army of the Potomac. Custer became a famous Indian fighter in the post war U. S. Army and was massacred with his entire command of the 7th U.S. Cavalry on June 25, 1876, at the battle of the Little Big Horn.

Wet plate, albumen carte de visite photograph, mounted to 2 3/8 x 4 card. Standing view in uniform with rank of brigadier general, holding his slouch hat with single star visible on the front. This view was taken by Mathew Brady & Co. on or about February 15, 1864. It is one of the scarcest of the Custer Civil War views to find! Rare.

Authentic fired .58 caliber Minnie embedded in an original piece of wood, from Spotsylvania, Va. Measures 1 1/2 inches wide.

The Spotsylvania campaign took place May 8-21, 1864, between the armies of General U.S. Grant and General Robert E. Lee. At the end of the fighting there were some 18,000 Union casualties, and 10,000 Confederate casualties.

The Little Giant!

(1813-1861) An outstanding legislator, and orator, he was one of the founders of the Democratic Party in Illinois. Served as U.S. Senator, 1843-61. He is best known for his debates in 1858 against Abraham Lincoln. He was narrowly defeated for the Democratic nomination for president by Franklin Buchanan in 1856. He did gain the Democratic nomination in 1860, but was defeated for the presidency by his old friend and rival Abraham Lincoln. Upon secession, and the outbreak of the Civil War, he supported Lincoln and his policies. He died of typhoid fever in 1861.

(1818-91) Commissioned 2nd lieutenant in the 4th Artillery, he was awarded the brevets of 1st lieutenant and captain for gallantry at Contreras, Churubusco and Chapultepec in the Mexican War. At the outbreak of the Civil War he was a full rank captain in the regular army and was highly commended by General McClellan during the Peninsular campaign for his conduct at Malvern Hill winning the brevets of major and lieutenant colonel. He commanded the guns of General Burnside's army on the left at Fredericksburg and he was commissioned brigadier general to rank from May 23, 1863. U.S. Congressman from Illinois

Speaker of the House

Defended Abraham Lincoln's stepmother, Sarah Bush Lincoln, in an 1858 Illinois case

(1836-1926) Known as "Uncle Joe," he was an Illinois congressman, and leader of the Republican Party. Served as Speaker of the House, 1903-11, and many historians consider him to be the most dominant Speaker in United States history. His antic speaking style, diminutive stature and pugnacious manner were his trademarks. He often clashed with Theodore Roosevelt who Cannon remarked had, "no more use for the Constitution than a tomcat has for a marriage license."

Cannon wielded the office of Speaker of the House with unpresedented power. At that time, he held the chair of the Rules Committee, and consequently he determined under what rules and restrictions bills could be debated, amended, and voted on, and in some cases whether they would be allowed on the floor at all. As such, Cannon effectively controlled every aspect of the House's agenda: Bills reached the floor of the house only if Cannon approved of it, and then in whatever form he determined with he himself deciding whether and to what extent the measures could be debated and amended.

Cannon also reserved to himself the right to appoint not only the chairs of the various House committees, but also all of committees' members, and despite the seniority system that had begun to develop, used that power to appoint his allies and proteges to leadership positions while punishing those who opposed his legislation. Crucially, Cannon exercised these powers to maintain discipline within the ranks of his own party: the Republicans were divided into the conservative "Old Guard," led by Cannon, and the progressives, led by President Theodore Roosevelt. His committee assignment privileges ensured that the party's Progressive element was essentially powerless in the House, and his control over the legislative process obstructed progressive legislation.

On March 17, 1910, after two failed attempts to curb Cannon's absolute power in the House, Nebraska Congressman George Norris led a coalition of 42 progressive Republicans and the entire delegation of 149 Democrats in a revolt. With many of Cannon's most powerful allies absent from the Chamber, but enough Members on hand for a quorum, Norris introduced a resolution that would remove the Speaker from the Rules Committee and strip him of his power to assign committees. While his lieutenants and the House sergeant-at-arms left the chamber to collect absent members in attempt to rally enough votes for Cannon, the Speaker's allies initiated a filibuster in the form of a point of order debate. When Cannon supporters proved difficult to find, many of the staunchest were Irish and spent the day at various St. Patrick's Day celebrations, the filibuster continued for 26 hours, with Cannon's present friends making repeated motions for recess and adjournment. When Cannon finally ruled the resolution out of order at noon on March 19th, Norris appealed the resolution to the full House, which voted to overrule Cannon, and then to adopt the Norris resolution.

Cannon managed to save some face by promptly requesting a vote to remove him as Speaker, which he won handily since the Republican majority would not risk a Democratic speaker replacing him. However, his iron rule of the House was broken, and Cannon lost the Speakership when the Democrats won a majority later that same year.

Cannon was the first U.S. Congressman to surpass 40 years of service ending his career with 48 years of service. Served as U.S. Congressman, 1873-91, and 1893-1913.

In his early years, he studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1858, and commenced practice in Terre Haute, Indiana.

He moved to Tuscola, Illinois in 1858, and became State's Attorney. During his tenure he had an important case involving President Abraham Lincoln's stepmother, Sarah Bush Lincoln. Sarah was accused of stealing a piece of cloth from a local store, and Cannon successfully defended her.

Cannon had become a Lincoln supporter during the Lincoln-Douglas debates of 1858. After Lincoln was elected President in 1860, Cannon received an appointment as a regional prosecutor.

Cannon was a critic of President Woodrow Wilson and the entry of the United States in World War I. He was also an outspoken crtic of Wilson's League of Nations.

Cannon was featured on the cover of the first ever issue of Time Magazine on the last day of his last term of office. He died at his residence in Danville, Illinois at the age of 90.

The 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery saw action at 2nd Bull Run, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania and Petersburg, to name but a few places.

Gettysburg: Batteries F & G, 1st Pennsylvania Light Artillery, were commanded by Captain R. Bruce Ricketts during the battle of Gettysburg. They were very heavily engaged on July 2, 1863, being posted on Cemetery Hill. After fighting in the afternoon on the 2nd, a heavy column of Confederates charged their batteries at about 8 p.m. and succeeded in capturing and spiking their left piece. In his Gettysburg report in the Official Records, Rickett's writes, "the cannoneers fought them hand to hand with handspikes, rammers, and pistols, and succeeded in checking them for a moment, when a part of the 2nd Corps charged in and drove them back. During the charge I expended every round of canister in the battery, and then fired case shot without the fuses. The enemy suffered severely." His report goes on to state that he lost 6 killed, 14 wounded, 3 missing, 20 horses killed and 1,200 rounds of ammunition spent.

Lieutenant George S. Greene, 57th Massachusetts Infantry, who signed this document, was wounded in action on June 3, 1864, in the battle of Cold Harbor, Va.
