Written by a soldier mortally wounded in the Antietam campaign!

Camp Augur, Upton’s Hill, Va., Jan. 26th/62

4 pages, 5 x 8, in ink, written by Francis Aubin, to his sisters Eliza and Matilda, on a patriotic letter sheet that is trimmed in red and blue along the edges. Comes with the original patriotic postal cover that has an embossed vignette of General Winfield Scott holding an American flag. The verse below reads: Brave In The Field. A True Patriot. Loyal To The Constitution And Union. Addressed to Miss Eliza Aubin, Victory Mills, Saratoga Co., N.Y., with a 3 cents rose George Washington postage stamp [#56], with C.D.S., Washington, D.C., Jan. 27, 1862.

Dear Sister,

I take the first opportunity of writing you a few lines in answer to yours of the 20th which I just received and recd. with great pleasure. I was very glad to hear from you again, to hear that you was enjoying good health, and your kind letter found me enjoying the same blessing as it left you. I was very sorry to hear that Mr. Marsel’s family was sick. I hope that when you write next time they will be better. Eliza you must give my best respects to Mr. Marsel and his wife and family. Tell them that I don’t forget my friends, although I am not very well acquainted with them, but as far as I am acquainted with them, I consider them as my best friends. Dear Sister, I received a letter from John last evening and I answer[ed] as soon as I got it. He did not tell me when he expected to leave Boonville, but if they do come when they get here in Washington, we will have a bully old time I bet. Eliza you spoke about the time that you hurried home last winter. That was quite a hurry time. That is the fact. I hope that you will not be obliged to hurry in that manner this winter. You said that you wish we all be to home this winter as we was last. I wish the same but I guess I shall remain in old Virginia. As I want to drop a line to Tilda I will have to close these for the present. Good by from your brother. Frank Aubin to Eliza.

Camp Augur, Jan. 26th/62

Dear Sister,

I received yours of the 20th and just sat down to answer it. Tilda I wrote you a letter last evening because I thought that you had not got the last one I sent you. Dear Sister, you asked me my little pullet’s name. Well her name will be Aubin before long. I shall give her your respects as soon as I see her, and about telling her to keep her nose clean, I can see it. I guess you had better keep yours clean and my pullet and I will take care of ourselves. Dear Sister, tell Mrs. Hill that I am glad that she don’t forget me, and I don’t forget her. I often think of all my friends, and I hope and trust that I may see them all again. Please give Mr. and Mrs. Hill my best respects and to all your best friends. Matilda you asked me if I heard from Mary Montee lately. No I have not. You said that my little gal that lives to Sandy Hill was married to a shoemaker. Bully for her. I wish she would make me a pair of boots and send to me. I be very much obliged to her. Tilda I am going to see Joseph Vermel tomorrow and what shall I tell him, that you love him as much as ever, or not. I guess I shall not say a word about you, that is of your love. I will now close my letter by asking you to write soon and give you my love. Good night from your affectionate brother, Frank Aubin, to his dear sister Matilda Aubin.

Eliza, I sent a letter to Tilda last night, and I sent old Dick’s likeness in it which is for you not Tilda, but you Eliza.

Write soon. F.A.

Headquarters 22 Regt. N.Y.V., Upton’s Hill, Virginia, Oct. 17/61

Good Morning Eliza,

How are you this morning and how is your health. I hope it is good. Mine is tip top. I feel almost as happy as I did that morning after that dream. Oh what a happy dream that was, was it not. When you see my woman I guess you better tell her to look for another man for I got me another wife. Maybe there is no need of you telling her to get another man. Probably she has got one by this time, but if she has everything is all right. Dear sister your letter of the 13[th] was received last night with sister Tilda[‘s]. I received 5 letters last night besides of them two that I received from you and Tilda. I tell you I was very happy to read them all. It was a great blessing to me for I hadn’t received a letter before since Sunday, and I generally get between 6 and 10 letters a week, and I began to think that I would not get any this week, but now I have and I expect [a] couple more tonight. Dear sister I am glad to hear that you and Matilda make your home to Mr. Hill and that you like to stay there so well. I think that I would like to stay there myself although I never been there but [a] couple times when I was to home. Eliza you must give me my best respects to Mr. and Mrs. Hill and all, so to Mr. Marsal[‘s] family and to all your friends. Dear sister I have no news to tell you this time for I wrote to you last Sunday, and there is nothing that happen[ed] since then, so I will have to close for the present. Write as soon and often as you can. Good by Eliza.

From your affectionate brother,

Frank

Miss Eliza in closing my letter I will give three cheers for the people of Victory, but especially for the Aubin girls. Good by.

I will not go home. Go home, oh no, not until the war is over. I must stand by the stars and stripes until they are out of danger.

Very desirable matching patriotic lettersheet and postally used envelope sent from a soldier who would be killed during the war.

(1823-1917) The most distinguished of the foreign born officers who served in the Union Army was born in Coblenz, Germany. After receiving a military education he became embroiled in the revolution which swept Europe in 1848 and the following year was forced to flee to the United States. He settled in Illinois and then moved to St. Louis whose large German population made him welcome. Osterhaus entered the Civil War as a major of a Missouri battalion and was mustered in on April 27, 1861. He fought at Wilson's Creek in August with his battalion and in December was made colonel of the 12th Missouri Infantry. He commanded a division of General Curtis' forces at the battle of Pea Ridge, Arkansas and in June 1862 was appointed brigadier general. During the Vicksburg campaign he directed a division and was wounded at Big Black River. At Chattanooga, he served under General Hooker and on the day of the assault upon Missionary Ridge performed magnificently as his command drove Bragg's Confederates from the southern end of the ridge. He was made a major general on July 23, 1864 during the Atlanta campaign. He went through Georgia with Sherman and also fought under him in the 1865 Carolina's campaign.

Wet plate, albumen carte de visite photograph, mounted to 2 3/8 x 4 card. Half view pose in uniform with rank of full colonel. Backmark: E. & H.T. Anthony, New York. Very fine.

Unused Union patriotic envelope with vignette of the U.S. Capitol building at Washington, D.C. Very fine. The Queen's Beasts are ten heraldic statues depicting the genealogy of Queen Elizabeth II. They were commissioned to stand in front of the annex to Westminster Abbey for the Coronation in 1953. Very good condition with light age wear to the rim gilding. Here is a scarce and beautiful dark blue transferware 9 3/4 inch plate. By its cobalt color, careful potting, design, and pearlware glaze, we would date it to the 1815 to 30 period.

The plate is free of all chips and flaws. The Oriental pattern features two figurres in the foreground with a fountain to their left and a pagoda behind. The surround has bold foliates. It's a great example of early Staffordshire cobalt blue transferware.

THE QUEEN'S BEASTS , CUP & SAUCER, VALE $35.00

Staffordshire Dark Blue Transferware Pla $225.00

This unmarked, ten-sided blue transferware plate bears a scene featuring a gothic castle with a large elm in the foreground. The surround has scenic reserves alternating with scrolling patterns. It is marked only with a term found on some early transferware and white ironstone items, "Best Goods." This black transferware plate is a beauty. It features a Scottish hunt scene with emphasis on the huntsman, garbed in kilt and accompanied by his trusty hound. The surround has scenic reserves alternating with scroll and flower designes.

The rim is bordered and irregularly scalloped. Condition is excellent. The underside bears the Caledonia backstamp and the imprint of the Adams pottery.

This is a particularly nice plate not only for its subject matter but also for its size, 10 1/2 inches wide.

The Adams pottery produced wares for many decades. By its characteristics, we would date this one to the 1830 to 40 period. A bone china mug with good color portraits of King George V in a blue military uniform and Queen Mary. Excellent condition with light age wear to the rim gilding. Here is a Staffordshire white ironstone ladle in excellent condition - no chips, cracks, hairlines, stains, or repairs. It is unmarked.

The bowl measures 2 1/2 inches across. The handle is 6 inches long. It bears a graceful lobed design that would blend with any Staffordshire white ironstone sauce tureen of the same period, the 1860s.

Staffordshire Blue Transferware Gothic P $100.00

Adams Lg. Black Transferware Plate, CALE $145.00

1911 KING CEORGE V & QUEEN MARY ROYAL DO $65.00

Staffordshire White Ironstone Sauce Ture $50.00

This pretty white ironstone sauce tureen measures 8 inches long by 6 inches tall. It was made in the Jacob Furnival pottery and bears its JF backstamp. The embossin consists of lily of the valley sprigs and dramatic indented thumbprint designs on the lid and base. Note also the large pear finial.

There are no chips or cracks on these two pieces. Crazing is evident. The vegetable server presented is Washington Shape. It was made in the pottery of John Meir and bears the backstamp, Measurement are 11 inches long by 6 inches tall.

Two potteries, Powell & Bishop and J Meir, produced this shape which consists of floral sprigs, an oversized bud finial and a cable design on the rim of both the lid and the base. The base actually has two cables, one at the top and another at the bottom. The J. Meir pottery made this one. In addition to the backstamp there is the cable patterning which the other pottery did not use in their design.

This shape was registered in 1863.

Condition is excellent - no chips, cracks, stains, or repairs.

Civil War Gamblers Walking Cane From a private collection and never before offered before is the Civil War or Pre-Civil War group (family) that is completely hand made and sewn.

The group of this family consists of a Father sitting with Mother on his lap and child cuddled in their arms.

The child has a dried up sucking thimble with at one time was attached to the underside of the child’s dress and is original.

Every piece is hand sewn with intent for a real life effect.

At one time, the group was sitting in a chair but over the year’s crumbled.

They haven’t been separated EVER and all 3 pieces are original…including the clothes that are intact but worn from age.

THE ENTIRE GROUP BELONGS IN A HISTORICAL MUSEUM, THAT’S HOW GOOD THEY REPRESENT OR THE SERIOUS COLLECTOR TO ADD TO THEIR OWN COLLECTION.
