Autographed carte de visite

Commander 2nd Kansas Cavalry

Colonel 83rd U.S. Colored Troops

Governor of Kansas

(1835-1913) Born in Lawrence County, Indiana, he graduated from Cincinnati College School of Law in 1858. He moved to Kansas Territory in 1859, and commenced a law practice in Garnett. Instrumental in helping to organize the Republican Party in Kansas, he was elected a member of the first Kansas state legislature in November 1859. When war broke out, he resigned his legislative seat and was commissioned captain in the 2nd Kansas Infantry. He served under General Nathaniel Lyon in southwest Missouri, taking part in all the engagements of that army, including the battle of Wilson's Creek. On Oct. 31, 1861, he was commissioned into the 2nd Kansas Cavalry, serving under General James G. Blunt in Missouri, Arkansas, and Indian Territory. During that time he participated in the battles of Newtonia, Old Fort Wayne, Cane Hill, Bald Peak, Cove Creek, Prairie Grove, and Van Buren. He led his battalion in the charge at Old Fort Wayne which resulted in the capture of an entire battery of Confederate artillery. On March 12, 1863, he was appointed commander of the 2nd Kansas Cavalry which he led on an expedition through the Choctaw Nation, capturing Fort Smith, Arkansas. Crawford was instrumental in capturing a number of prisoners, wagons, horses, a Confederate paymaster, and $40,000 of Confederate money. On December 6, 1863, he was commissioned colonel of the 83rd U.S. Colored Troops, and led them in the Camden expedition, and in the battle of Jenkins Ferry where they captured an artillery battery. In March 1864, he participated in General N.P. Banks' Red River campaign. On September 8, 1864, while still in the field, Colonel Crawford was nominated for governor of Kansas. He was granted a leave of absence in early October, the first he had had since entering the Union army, but on arriving in Kansas he learned of Confederate General Sterling Price's Missouri Raid, and instead of entering the governor's race, he at once reported for duty to General Samuel R. Curtis. He was promoted to brevet brigadier general, March 13, 1865, for his very creditable Civil War record. Elected governor of Kansas, November 8, 1864, he took the oath of office, Jan. 9, 1865. He was reelected becoming the first person to be reelected governor of Kansas. He resigned on November 4, 1868, to take command of the 19th Kansas Volunteer Cavalry which was to join the 7th U.S. Cavalry in the Custer Sheridan winter campaign of 1868-69.

Light age toning and wear. Very fine. 'Staffordshire salt-glazed ware is intricately molded, often in elaborate forms and sometimes depicting historical events. It is trimly potted, often of extreme thinness, and lighter in weight than porcelain of the same period. This eighteenth-century ware brought Staffordshire pottery from the kitchens into the drawing rooms.' This copiously illustrated book is the first work to be devoted to Staffordshire salt-glazed ware – a delicate and highly collectible class of pottery that, in its lightness and fine potting, closely rivaled porcelain in the 18th century.

THE ILLUSTRATED GUIDE TO STAFFORDSHIRE SALT-GLAZED STONEWARE by Arnold R. Mountford, Barrie & Jenkins, London, 1971.

Eight color plates and 244 halftones picture hundreds of examples of this ware complete with in-depth captions. 'Staffordshire salt-glazed ware, widely exported, established an overseas trade that was to persist when the cream-ware body superseded salt-glaze - a trade continued in fine bone china today.' This scholarly study covers by chapter: Origins of Staffordshire; Brown Salt-Glaze; Drab Ware; Salt-Glazed Blocks; White Salt-Glazed Stoneware; Scratch Blue and Littler-Wedgwood Blue; Enameled and Printed Salt-Glazed Stoneware; Salt-Glazed Figures; Extracts from the Sales-Account Book and Crate Book of Thomas and John Wedgwood; and British and American Museums where Staffordshire Salt-Glazed Stoneware is Represented; Bibliography; and Index. If you are looking for a pictorial guide for the identification of this ware – one that is supplemented by in-depth narrative – then you will want to add this text to the shelf of your permanent reference library.

Norwalk, Conn.

July 6/82

Genl. Wm. B. Franklin

Pres. National Board, &c

My Dear Franklin,

Not having seen Mr. Fitch since my return from Minnesota as I had hoped to, I sent him a note asking him what he intended regarding the transfer of Fitch-Home to your Board. Last night the following was received, "you will remember that I told you I had given up all hopes of the U.S. Government taking the Home as I never could live to see them sell the property which I have given for the benefit of the soldiers & their orphans." Mr. Baker and myself have an appointment to meet Mr. Fitch on the 8th inst. when we hope to come to a more [?] understanding upon the subject of which I shall be very glad to give up the substance.

I am Sincerely,

D.N. Couch

Trustee Fitch Home

Civil War Nurse

Founder of the American Red Cross

Card Signature With Sentiment, Place & Date

(1821-1912) A native of Massachusetts, she was a teacher, U.S. patent clerk, nurse, and humanitarian. Barton moved to Washington, D.C. in 1854, and began work as a clerk in the U.S. Patent Office. This was the first time a woman had received a substantial clerkship in the Federal government, and at a salary equal to a man's salary. Subsequently, under political opposition to women working in government offices, her position was reduced to that of copyist, and in 1857, under the administration of President James Buchanan, eliminated entirely. After the election of Abraham Lincoln, she returned to work at the patent office, now as temporary copyist, in the hope she could pioneer to make way for more women in government service. On April 21, 1861, nine days after the commencement of the Civil War, Union soldiers answering President Lincoln's call to arms were attacked by an angry mob of Confederate sympathizers in Baltimore. They arrived in Washington with their dead and wounded and no baggage or supplies. Barton tended to these wounded soldiers who were quartered in the U.S. Senate chamber. After the First Battle of Bull Run, July 21, 1861, Barton established the main agency to obtain and distribute supplies to wounded soldiers. She insisted that, "while our soldiers stand and fight, I can stand and feed and nurse them." She was given a pass by Surgeon General William Hammond to ride in army ambulances to provide comfort to the soldiers and nurse them back to health, and she lobbied the U.S. Army bureaucracy, at first without success, to bring her own medical supplies to the battlefields. Finally, on August 3, 1862, she obtained permission to travel to the front lines, eventually tending to the wounded on some of the most horrible battlefields of the war. She said that her place was "anywhere between the bullet and the battlefield." Her face sometimes black from gunpowder, she dispensed bandages, and dug bullets out of flesh with her pen knife. At Second Bull Run, she helped care for the maimed survivors. Clara wrote, "the men were brought down from the field till they covered acres." She helped split open bales of hay on which to lay the wounded men. By midnight there were three thousand helpless soldiers lying on that hay. Barton also administered to the wounded at Cedar Mountain, Chantilly and South Mountain. At the Battle of Antietam, when Confederate artillery seemed certain to hit the field hospital, all of the male surgical assistants ran for cover, but Clara Barton stood her ground and held the rolling operating table steady so that the surgeon could complete his work. "Now what do you think of Miss Barton?" wrote the surgeon to his wife. "In my examination, General McClellan, with all his laurels, sinks into insignificance beside the true heroine of the age, the angel of the battlefield." It was also at Antietam, where Clara experienced one of her most harrowing situations. She was bent over a wounded soldier administering aid when a Confederate bullet ripped through her sleeve and killed the soldier. After the war, she ran the Office of "Missing Soldiers," in Washington, D.C. Barton then achieved widespread recognition by delivering lectures around the country about her war experiences. She met Susan B. Anthony and began a long association with the woman's suffrage movement. She also became acquainted with Frederick Douglass and became an activist for black civil rights. In 1869, during her trip to Geneva, Switzerland, Barton was introduced to the Red Cross and Henry Dunant's book "A Memory of Solferino," which called for the formation of national societies to provide relief voluntarily on a neutral basis. When she returned to the United States, she inaugurated a movement to gain recognition for the International Committee of the Red Cross by the United States government. When she began work on this project in 1873, most Americans thought the U.S. would never again face a calamity like the Civil War, but Barton finally succeeded during the administration of President Chester Arthur, using the argument that the new American Red Cross could respond to crises other than war. Barton became President of the American branch of the Red Cross, which held its first official meeting at her I Street apartment in Washington, D.C., May 21, 1881. The first local society was founded on August 22, 1881, in Dansville, N.Y., where she maintained a country home. The society's role changed with the advent of the Spanish-American War during which it aided refugees and prisoners of the war. In 1896, responding to the humanitarian crisis in the Ottoman Empire in the aftermath of the Hamidian Massacres, Barton sailed to Istanbul and after long negotiations with Abdul Hamid II, opened the first American International Red Cross headquarters in the heart of Turkey. Barton herself traveled along with five other Red Cross expeditions to the Armenian provinces in the spring of 1896, providing relief and humanitarian aid. Barton also worked in hospitals in Cuba in 1898 at the age of 77. Barton's last field operation as President of the American Red Cross was the relief effort for the victims of the Galveston hurricane of September 1900. The operation established an orphanage for children of the 6,000 dead, helped to acquire lumber for rebuilding houses, and teamed with the New York World newspaper to accept contributions for the relief effort. Barton resigned as president in 1904, at the age of 83. After resigning, Barton founded the National First Aid Society. On April 12, 1912, at the age of 91, she died in Glen Echo, Maryland with all her friends by her side.
