Charcoal drawing by Jennie (1872-1961) and Fannie Burr (1858-1931). Measures overall 18 1/4" by 24 ". They were 2 of 5 children born into Monroe, CT's most prominent family. Their father was a very successful farmer. Although the 2 sisters were 14 years apart, they were close. Fannie began to draw as a child. She later attended and graduated from the Yale School of Fine Arts. After that, she studied at the Art Students League in NYC. These accomplishments were very rare for a young woman in those days. Young Jennie followed in her older sister's footsteps. She also began to draw as a child, but when she was of age, she went off to Mount Holyoke College to study liberal arts. While there, she took art classes, and her talent really emerged. She left Mount Holyoke after 2 years. She entered the Yale School of Fine Arts in 1895. She won prizes while there and impressed both her teachers and her fellow students. After Yale, she attended the Art Student's League; Fannie later joined her to continue her studies. They did not consider themselves trailblazers, but in a sense they were; 2 young unmarried women living in NYC on their own, studying with mostly male artists, and with no interest in marriage, was remarkably liberal and forward-thinking at the turn of the century. Their father built them a studio on the farm, probably to encourage them to come home. When they returned from New York, they tried unsuccessfully to find teaching positions. Fannie got some portrait commissions. At this time, their father unfortunately lost a great deal of money that he had invested with a man who turned out to be a swindler. He took ill, and eventually died. Fannie and Jennie had to pretty much abandon their artwork to run the farm and care for their elderly mother, who died in 1916. Fannie developed a heart problem and her health deteriorated; she died in 1931, leaving Jennie alone. Jennie, who had always been shy, became reclusive, planting and harvesting her gardens, caring for her animals, hunting small game, and stubbornly rebuffing assistance and surviving the Depression on her own, until her death in 1961 at age 89. She left her estate to Mt. Holyoke College. ATTENTION ! Great black on white female silhouette in brass frame. 2.5”L & 2 1/8”W oval. $375  "The English in India were curious about everything, particularly people. To satisfy this interest, as well as the English penchant for collecting, Indian artists painted sets of small pictures showing many catergories of humanity. Just as tourists of today are assailed by hawkers waving postcards, earlier travelers were approached by picture sellers with renderings of local views, famous personages, local castes an, and occupations." [See ROOM FOR WONDER-INDIAN PAINTING DURING THE BRITISH PERIOD 1760-1880, by Stuart Cary Welch.] It is clear by the quality of this picture that it was rendered by a skilled artist, and is far superior to most of the work that was churned out by hack artists and hawked along the wharves and sreets. This painting probably originates from the eastern region of India. PLEASE click on other images to obtain different views of this well done painting. Shipping extra.
