(1802-76) Author, pioneering feminist, social theorist, and abolitionist. Born in Norwich, England, she became an enormously popular author despite the handicap of being deaf since childhood. She began her literary career by writing articles on religious subjects, and her fame spread with Illustrations of Political Economy (9 vol., 1832–34) and Illustrations of Taxation (1834), two series of stories interpreting classical economics. After a two year visit to the United States, 1834-36, where she made lasting friendships with the anti-slavery factions in Boston, she became a staunch advocate for the abolition of slavery and wrote several unflattering works on this American institution, including Society in America (1837) and Retrospect of Western Travel (1838).

Famous Quotes by Harriet Martineau:

"If there is any country on earth where the course of true love may be expected to run smooth, it is America."

"The sum and substance of female education in America, as in England, is training women to consider marriage as the sole object in life, and to pretend that they do not think so."

"Any one must see at a glance that if men and women marry those whom they do not love, they must love those whom they do not marry."

<b>Loyal Virginia Unionist</b>

(1802-69) Born in Dumfries, Va., he was a lawyer and politician who stayed true to the Union. The most conspicuous arrest made during the Civil War under the suspension of the writ of habeas corpus was that of this prominent Virginia citizen who had been a large part of the political life of Virginia for 30 years. He had served as a member of the Virginia State Legislature and the U.S. House of Representatives. He was a staunch opponent of secession declaring his state had no right to secede, and said that the leaders in the South were conspirators. He was arrested on March 2, 1862, in his home in Richmond, and confined in jail for several weeks. Through a personal interview with Confederate Secretary of War, George W. Randolph, he finally obtained permission to remain in his own home in Richmond, upon taking an oath to say nothing more that was prejudicial to the Confederacy. Tiring of confinement in his house, he purchased a farm in Culpeper County, Va., and moved there in January 1863. From there he started up again to denounce secession. His home was always full of Confederate officers and Union generals and he was arrested once again by orders of General J.E.B. Stuart, on October 12, 1863, but was soon released without further molestation.

Portrait engraving. 6 x 9. Engraved by T. Doney. Hon. John Minor Botts is imprinted below his likeness.

(1807-1870) Robert E. Lee graduated #2 in the West Point class of 1829. He emerged from the Mexican War with one wound, three brevets for gallantry and a brilliant reputation. During the Civil War, he commanded the Army of Northern Virginia at such battlefields as 2nd Manassas, Sharpsburg, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Gettysburg, the Wilderness, Spotsylvania, Petersburg, Richmond and Appomattox. His reputation became legendary and he might very well be the most famous soldier in American history!

Full color lithograph portrait. Standing view of General Robert E. Lee in Confederate general's uniform, posing with his arms folded across his chest. His hat and gloves are seen in the left background, and hilt of his sword at right. Displayed in an ornate, brown wood oval frame with raised gold floral accents and gold liner. Measures 19 1/2 x 25 1/2.

General Lee was revered by the South and respected by the North. While at West Point he was adjutant of the Corps of Cadets and later returned to head the institution. His deep concern for his men is legendary. Their feeling for him was one of love, not awe or dread. This relation of affection between the Army and its Commander had much to do with the undaunted bravery displayed by his men and bore a due share in the many victories they gained against overwhelming odds.

Beautiful portrait of this legendary Confederate General which is ready to hang on your wall.

(1824-1863) He graduated in the West Point class of 1846, a class that was to furnish 24 general officers to the Union and Confederate armies during 1861-65. He won the brevets of captain and major during the Mexican War. Resigning his U.S. Army commission, he became an instructor at the Virginia Military Institute in 1852. He earned the sobriquet "STONEWALL" for his gallant stand at the battle of 1st Manassas in 1861. He waged a magnificent campaign in 1862, in the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia. Jackson was mortally wounded on the evening of May 2, 1863, at Chancellorsville, Va., accidentally shot by his own men as his made a night reconnoisance. His left arm was amputated and he died on May 10th. His loss to the Confederacy was catastrophic. General Robert E. Lee lost not only a friend, but his best general.

Full color lithograph portrait. Standing view of General Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson in Confederate general's uniform, wearing kepi, and holding binoculars, and gauntlet. His sword and sash are attached to his belt. Displayed in an ornate, brown wood oval frame with raised gold floral accents and gold liner. Measures 19 1/2 x 25 1/2.

"There stands Jackson like a stonewall, rally behind the Virginians." At the height of the battle of 1st Manassas, as Jackson stood firm in the face of the enemy, Gen. Barnard E. Bee yelled these words. Forever Stonewall was his name. Previously a professor at V.M.I., Jackson proved to be a genius of military strategy. General Lee spoke of him as his right arm. General Thomas J. Jackson was mortally wounded on May 2, 1863, at the battle of Chancellorsville. His loss to the Confederacy was beyond measure.

Beautiful portrait of this legendary Confederate General which is ready to hang on your wall.  This is an English 19th century print in an early maple frame. The print is of a boy sitting on an odd, early auto. He's smoking a long pipe & has an open book & bottle & glass nearby. It's matted beautifully in dark brown which brings out the deep colors of the print. It measures 14" wide x 11 1/2" high. Circa 1890

Framed, signed, limited edition art print, by Dale Gallon, titled "For The Cause." It was a brief moment toward the end of the seemingly endless Civil War. April 6, 1865, the long retreat from the defenses of Petersburg was staggering its hungry way westward and there was, in the words of one participant, "blood at every bridge and ford." At Sayler's Creek, the Army of Northern Virginia nearly dissolves. Broken, disheartened, disorganized men, not even looking for a rallying point, find one; from somewhere, General Robert E. Lee picks up a battleflag and holds it, finally revealing what the true heart and soul of this Confederate Army, for four long years, has been. The men rally and form into a small but glorious remnant of the once indomitable army. And Lee becomes the symbol he never sought to be; the embodiment of the cause soon to be lost, of courage in the face of overwhelming odds, never to be forgotten. Dale Gallon's, "For The Cause," shows Lee as he touched something within each man who saw him that day, and within all of us who can only wish we had. [Source: Dale Gallon Historic Art]. Professionally framed in an ornate gold wood frame which measures 29 1/2 x 27 1/2. Triple matted in gray, gold and light blue. Brass name plate affixed which reads, For The Cause, By Dale Gallon. (1732–1818) First governor-general of British India. Employed (1750) as a clerk by the East India Company, he soon became manager of a trading post in Bengal. When Calcutta was captured (1756) by Siraj-ud-Daula, Hastings was taken prisoner but soon released. After the British recapture (1757) of the city, he was made British resident at Murshidabad. Good service there brought appointment to the Calcutta council (1761), but he returned to England (1764) disgusted with administrative corruption in Bengal. Hastings went back (1769) to India as a member of the Madras council and became (1772) governor of Bengal, immediately embarking on a course of judicial and financial reform, law codification, and the suppression of banditry, measures that laid the foundation of direct British rule in India. In 1774, he was appointed governor-general of India. This position was created by Lord North’s Regulating Act (1773), which also set up a four-member governing council. In the succeeding years Hastings was greatly hampered by opposition in the council, especially from Sir Philip Francis. Another problem he encountered in his new position was the ill-defined relationship with and resulting lack of control over the subordinate provincial governors. The interference of the Bombay government in Maratha affairs led to a war with the Marathas, while the blunders of the Madras government provoked conflict with Haidar Ali of Mysore. In both cases Hastings, conscious of the danger of French intervention, dispatched armies from Bengal that saved the British position. Nonetheless he was criticized for interference with the provincial governments. Hastings resigned (1784) and returned to England, where he was charged with high crimes and misdemeanors by Edmund Burke and Sir Philip Francis, whom he had wounded in a duel in India. The chief charges against him concerned his extortion of money from the rajah of Benares and the begum of Oudh, his hiring out of British troops to the nawab of Oudh to subdue the Rohillas (a warlike Afghan tribe), and his alleged responsibility for the judicial murder of an Indian merchant, Nandkumar. He was impeached in 1787; but the trial, begun in 1788, ended with acquittal in 1795, despite the bitter prosecution of Burke, Francis, Richard B. Sheridan, and Charles James Fox. Hastings’s fortune was spent in the defense, but the East India Company contributed to his later support. He became popular and was made a privy councilor (1814). He proved himself a talented speaker, and used this talent to join with Whig politician Charles Fox in calling for peace with the American Colonies. In 1804, when Napoleon was threatening invasion, Pitt formed an alliance with Russia, Austria and Sweden against France. After victory at the Battle of Trafalgar, Pitt was hailed as the saviour of Europe. However, Napoleon went on to defeat Russia and Austria in 1805 at Ulm and Austerlitz, effectively conquering Europe. It was a profound personal blow for Pitt. He died at the age of 46 on January 23, 1806. His last words were, Oh my country! How I love my country!
