Bonded bronzed measures 12. 5 x 7 inches. B 1905 D 1993. New York Times obituary Published: September 30, 1993: Peter Lipman-Wulf, a German-born sculptor who lived in the United States for nearly 50 years, died on Saturday in Hamburg, Germany. He was 88 and had homes in Manhattan and Sag Harbor, L.I. He was born in Berlin and studied at the Berlin Academy. Mr. Lipman-Wulf, who was Jewish, left Germany in 1933 when the Nazis came to power, after being dismissed from his post at the Prussian Academy in Berlin and having several sculpture commissions canceled. He lived first in Paris and then in Basel before immigrating to the United States in 1947. Bio from Peter Rose Gallery: "He was born in 1905 into a Jewish family that had converted to Christianity before his birth. His father was a well known lawyer and expected his son to follow in his foot steps. His mother was a famous artist of the period. At the age of 15 he moved to Oberammaergau in Bavaria where he apprenticed to one of the leading wood carvers of the day. He remained there for two years. He received his MBA from the Berlin State University and was expected to succeed his professor as the official State Sculptor of Berlin. He had received many prizes and had already been given several commissions of stone sculptures for the city of Berlin. In 1933 with Hitler in power he left Germany for France. He was interred in Camp des Milles in 1939 and was released in 1940. He escaped from Paris in 1942 and went to live in Switzerland with his daughter and Swiss wife. After the war he returned to Rome and finished carving the Crucifixion. In total he had given four working years to this task. Obviously the war had interrupted his work. In 1947 the French government sent the Crucifixion to South America and ultimately after much adventure the Crucifixion was sent to New York. In 1953 it was exhibited at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the director commented that, "to be in the presence of Mr. Lipman-wulf's Crucifixion is both a sobering and exalting experience." Measures 16 inches high, 24 inches long with a 8.5 inches wide base and 4.5 inches wide at the sculptures center. Rich old original patina. Weights 79 lbs. Thomas Francois Cartier studied under George Gardet and started exhibiting at the Salon in 1904, winning an honorable mention in the Salon in 1908 and a gold medal in 1927. This rare carved wood bust of a woman features an extraordinary pierce carved halo. It is signed by master carver I W Radia. Radia was probably taught by Ida Bagus Tilem, whose name also appears near Radia's signature. It measures 12 inches tall, 6.5 inches across its halo, 5.5 inches across its bottom and 3 inches thick. Tilem is a nationally recognized carver in Bali. He is the son of, and was taught by, lda Bagus Nyana, another Balinese "national treasure" who received a high national award in recognition of his art in 1974 . The daughter of Samuel and Rose Weiner, Russian-Jewish immigrants,she was born In 1913 in the tiny Jewish community of Beaver Falls PA. In 1936, she married Harold Trobe, also of Beaver Falls. The Weiner and Trobe families knew each other well, although the Weiners were secular socialists and Harold Trobe's father was the town rabbi. In 1947, Ruth and Harold and their two sons, aged 4 and 2, moved to Vienna, Austria where Harold was in charge of displaced persons camps that housed the survivors of the Holocaust. Ruth opened a sculpture studio and soon began to exhibit her work. Harold's social service work on behalf of worldwide Jewry later took the family to Geneva, Rome, Paris, Rio de Janeiro, and Jerusalem, over a 33-year period of living abroad. With access to a glittering international society, Ruth hosted artists, musicians, composers, writers, journalists, Fulbright scholars, and ambassadors. For these peripatetic expatriates, who gathered in her salon, she made critical personal connections and found the best buys. She claimed that she could often identify the undercover CIA agents among them and sometimes even pry out their secrets. Her sculptures, mostly semi-abstract figures of men and women, were displayed in galleries around the world. Among the owners of her work were Golda Meir, past prime minister of Israel, and Leon Fleisher, the noted pianist. The entire sculpture measures 18.5 inches high by 18.5 inches long by 11 inches wide, including the mahogany base. Artist's Biography: Norman Legassie began his sculpture career at the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Old Lyme, Connecticut, and was awarded scholarships for study for three consecutive years. He was a faculty member there from 1983 to 1988, teaching portrait and figure sculpture. This sculptor's principle works include the portrait bust of Senator Thomas Dodd, which stands in the entry of the Thomas J. Dodd Archives & Research Center of Judaic Studies and Oral History, at the University of Connecticut at Storrs. Mr. Legassie's seven-foot bronze figure of an American construction worker, completed in 1993, is a memorial to the victims of the 1987 L'Ambiance Plaza building collapse in Bridgeport, Connecticut. In addition, his portrait bust of George W. Crawford, 33rd Sovereign Grand Commander, is on view at the Prince Hall Freemasonry, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Other principle works include a larger version of this bronze figure of the American playwright Eugene O'Neill as a child, located at City Pier, New London, CT, with smaller versions installed at the Beinecke Library, Yale University, and in Shelykovo, Soviet Union, at the country estate of the 19th-century Russian dramatist, Alexander Ostrovsky. Mr. Legassie's portrait bust of Susanne K. Langer, American philosopher and author, can be found at the Charles E.
