With a reputation second to none during his lifetime, Harry Murphy was Britain's leading jewellery designer of the first half of the twentieth century, and one of the most influential and accomplished silversmiths of the Art Deco and Arts & Crafts periods. One of the first to be nominated Royal Designer for Industry, Murphy was a widely revered figure who seemed in his many skills to encapsulate that early twentieth century dream, the successful marriage of art and industry. Yet today, he is little known. This book, published to coincide with an exhibition of Murphy's work at Goldsmith's Hall in London, redresses the balance and brings Murphy once again to the forefront of the public's attention. Featuring a broad spectrum of Murphy s work - domestic silver and flatware, Church silver, regalia, civic and corporate silver, enamels and a fascinating range of gold and gem-set jewellery - The Jewellery and Silver of H.G. Murphy is the definitive book on the subject.

Return to an earlier time, a more elegant age, when celery vases, stands, glasses, uprights, and jars graced nineteenth century Victorian and early twentieth century tables. Over 350 beautiful images display vintage cut, pattern, and art glass celeries. These images are arranged by celery vase form, including those with and without stems and by stem and bowl shapes. A wide variety of decorative techniques are displayed and discussed.

The detailed text explains different decorative techniques, shapes, and motifs, and identifies the glass manufacturers involved. Additionally, it provides a detailed glossary, bibliography, and index. Values are found in the captions. This book will be a treasure to all who love and collect vintage glass.

New book, 160 pages, softcover, 8 1/2 x 11.  Archimede Seguso (1909-1999), one of the great Muranese masters, took traditional glassmaking techniques to extremes. His introduction of merletto lacework technique at the Venice Biennale of 1952 turned heads. His secret for embedding fine lacy threads of glass was never shared. Rather than apply the filigree to the surface of vessels as was traditionally done, Seguso floated these delicate wisps of color inside the glass.

Archimede Seguso was also a sculptor. His preference for solid glass and love of nature resulted in a glass menagerie of feathered, scaled, and furry creatures. In the late 1950s he debuted with an array of alabastro figurals mimicking natural white alabaster, as well as the stone in delicious colors.

This book, the first on the subject written in English, shows the full array of his extraordinary work in almost 500 full color photos from collections around the world. With focus on the 1950s and the Venice Biennales, his designs for decanters, vases, bowls, and animal sculpture from the period are shown with detailed captions and a price guide. This book also includes a history, bibliography, index, and illustrated glossary of terms.

Prior to the Industrial Revolution, only the affluent could afford many pieces of jewelry. In the mid-nineteenth century, however, industrialization led jewelry to become more affordable and the rising middle class created a larger market. Increasingly, jewelry was made not only from traditional precious metals and stones, but also of materials such as gold-plated base metals, vulcanite, hair, plastics, aluminum, and much more. Beginning with a visual timeline, this comprehensive volume couples an informative text with outstanding photographs of over 1,000 pieces of fine and costume jewelry made in America, Europe, and Asia. The jewelry reflects the changing styles of each decade, ranging from romantic to humorous to sumptuous. Pieces are organized by type of material or in delightful themes, such as heart-shaped items, insects, Egyptian influenced, and more. A helpful glossary, extensive bibliography, tips for collectors, and current values are all included. This book is certain to inspire and delight beginning and advanced jewelry collectors, historians, and designers.

Very Good in Good Plus jacket Folio-over 12"-15" tall. A detailed study of the most stunning pieces, an examination of Lalique's glassmaking techniques with respect to their effect on his work with approximately 350 full color photographs.

This beautifully written new book explores the work of 175 of the most important American modernist artist jewelers through a comprehensive text and over 540 color and 35 black and white photos. Beginning with the streamlining of Art Moderne, modernist jewelers mirrored the consciousness of their age. They were free thinkers-artists who broke away from the mainstream of jewelry design and looked to the fine arts for inspiration; they were Surrealists, Cubists, and Abstract Expressionists functioning as sculptors in small scale, painters in enamels, and architects in miniature. The modernist metalsmiths of the 1930s through 1960s laid the groundwork for the enormous expansion of metalsmithing in the 1970s and '80s. These creative jewelers produced personal designs as they absorbed the changes happening in the world around them. The artists' stories and jewelry are arranged chronologically and linked to four pivotal exhibitions held at the Museum of Modern Art, New York City, in 1946; the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis, in 1948 and 1955; and an exhibition on paper in 1959. Together, the artists at these important events comprise the modernist movement of wearable art directly and through their influence on the subsequent generations. This important book will stand as the primary reference to art jewelry of the mid-20th century and be consulted by all who want to understand the innovations it embraces.

Tiffany, has produced the definitive work on America’s premier artist-designer, examining every facet of Tiffany’s unrivalled achievements in a lifetime consecrated, in his own words, to ‘The Quest of Beauty’.

As Tiffany’s wares have continued to rise in popularity since their resurgence in the market-place in the 1950s, many collectors have focused solely on lamps, others on glassware, while others again have assembled collections encompassing several Tiffany disciplines, for example, a handful of lamps, vases, fancy goods, and a window or painting or two. Only Takeo Horiuchi, however, has set out to build a comprehensive collection that incorporates masterworks in each and every artistic discipline to which Tiffany applied himself: Paintings, Furniture, Windows, Mosaics, Art Glass, Lamps, Fancy Goods, Metalware, Enamelware, Silver, Pottery and Jewellery.

This book, based on the superlative Louis C. Tiffany Garden Museum Collection formed by Mr. Horiuchi, presents a unique overview of every aspect of Tiffany’s talent. For the first time it is possible to see, gathered together ‘under one roof’, the range of Louis C. Tiffany’s creativity – from his famous lamps and windows to his lesser-known paintings and furniture. Every piece in the collection is reproduced in colour, often complemented by extracts from contemporary art revues and the Tiffany firm’s sales catalogues, advertisements and price lists, while photographs show them in their original domestic settings, or in the firm’s showrooms or international expositions at which they made their debuts. Tiffany’s workshops are also illustrated, as well as the logbook entries of its artisans and annotated sketches of its designers.

This wealth of illustrative material is accompanied by Alastair Duncan’s detailed and evocative descriptions of the workshops, materials, manufacturing processes, the rich and famous who patronised Tiffany, their commissions, and the colourful personalities of the team of artist-craftsmen with whom Tiffany surrounded himself.

This book provides a beautiful and comprehensive picture of every artistic discipline to which Tiffany applied himself, a true testament to his extraordinary talent.

Antique Glass Bottles by Willy Van Den B

This authoritative book presents new information about the late 19th- and early 20th-century cut glass industry in Corning, New York.

The recent discovery of a mass of archival material relating to T.G. Hawkes and Company, including thousands of letters, has enabled the author to research business practices in the glass industry in more detail than ever before.

Using this new information, together with her already considerable knowledge, Jane Shadel Spillman has produced the first book on American cut glass to go beyond the glass and examine the workings of the industry itself, including labor relations, sources of blanks, special orders for the White House, Hawkes’s representation at the Paris world’s fair in 1889, and communication between the cut glass industry and silver manufacturers such as Gorham and Tiffany. Competition and cooperation between the glass cutting firms are also highlighted, and considerable attention is paid to other companies, such as J. Hoare, H.P. Sinclaire, and O.F. Egginton.

There are 512 illustrations of glass pieces, catalog pages, advertisements and old documents, including 80 colour plates. This is a book which will be of special interest to collectors of cut glass, and also to students of business and social history.

Originally published in 1976, The Price Guide to Jewellery has undergone numerous reprints and is now reissued in a new edition. It is universally acknowledged as one of the most useful and informative books on the subject ever written.

Precious stones and metals possess a universal appeal although jewellery is often considered as being very expensive and beyond the normal pocket. Accordingly, the author is at pains to include a comprehensive selection of jewellery from all periods and at all price ranges. Most of the pieces shown are, or have been, on sale in particular shops, or have passed through the salerooms.

Jeweller prices vary with individual pieces according to value of materials, workmanship and availability. The prices shown are within a bracket which the private individual might expect to have to pay when buying from a retail business and all have been carefully checked and brought up to date through consultation with a wide variety of London jewellers.

The book is arranged chronologically as far as possible in terms of both date and style. The author also relates the number of illustrations directly to the type of jewellery most readily available and the largest number of colour plates to the most prolific period of production. For this reason nineteenth century rings will obviously outnumber those produced, say, during the Anglo-Saxon period. Profusely illustrated in colour and black and white, with detailed captions, this book invaluable for identification and a source of long-term reference.

The history of great diamonds is intimately interwoven with the lives of emperors and conquerors, great kings and queens, with statesmen and soldiers, the rich and worldy - but also, inevitably, with those who lead more shadowy lives. They have been objects of passion, As well as being objects of exceptional beauty and rarity, they were once thought to posses magical properties which protected their owners from enemies. Initially a male prerogative, reflecting status and authority, they later adorned the wives of powerful men, and at times were offered as influential gifts. Few are immune to the temptation od diamonds; many sacrificed their lives and souls to them. In the past decade some historical diamonds have resurfaced, whilst the market has also seen an unprecedented arrival of 'fancy-colour' and modern gemstones, amonst them some of the biggest and finest ever seen. In this updated fourth edition of 'Famous Diamonds', Ian Balfour tells the fascinating stories of almost eighty of these remarkable gems. Some have detailed histories that can be traced from the present day back to the moment thay were mined, while others have a more mysterious past or have disappeared from view. Also included are shorter entries on a further selection of some forty notable diamonds  Understanding Jewellery

 The Book

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This essentially practical book, Understanding Jewellery, now available in a revised and fully updated third edition, is unique in explaining why jewellery values vary and the individual points important for each category. A major section is devoted to the identification of the principal gem-stones and the testing methods to assess quality and detect fakes.

Explanations are given in a straightforward, uncomplicated manner with a text largely linked directly to specific illustrations. This makes the assimilation of the information much easier than in traditional text dominated books. The authors, both Sotheby’s jewellery experts, evaluate many millions of pounds’ worth annually and thus handle a complete cross-section of what is available on the market. They have specially selected the hundreds of superb colour illustrations to show what to look for and, equally important, what to avoid.

Whether interested in the history of fashion, deciding what to buy or simply to enjoy a visual feast of beautiful objects, this book will serve as an invaluable reference and represents outstanding value.

Written by Elyse Carlin - Revised 2004 edition.

This book provides the best study of Art and Crafts style jewelry and metalwork to date. Devised late in the 19th century as a reaction to industrialized manufacturing, the Arts and Crafts movement stressed naturalistic materials, designs and techniques.

The book begins with the British movement and traces the roots of this "new art" including its characteristics, materials, motifs, influences and makers' marks. Biographical sketches are provided for over 240 of the most influential British designers/jewelers/metalworkers, with discussions of the guilds, schools and commercial firms.

In over 700 photographs, nearly 400 in glorious color, the success of these designs to provide fascinating and beautiful objects is demonstrated.

Long out-of-print, this early definitive reference book is the story of the New England Glass Company of Cambridge, Massachusetts, which ran from 1818 to 1888. Although this place is less well known than the Sandwich works, it was at one time the largest glass house in the world. CAMBRIDGE GLASS 1818 TO 1888 by Lura Woodside Watkins, Bramhall House, NY 1930 reprint (ca 1960). This book is based upon research done by visiting some thirty families whose relatives had been connected with the works, and by studying newspapers, land records and other documents. By unearthing this information, the author was able to give the New England Glass Company credit due it for much of our finest glass and to write an authentic history of an industry once so important. The illustrations of glass in the book were made from authentic specimens found in the homes of former workmen. Products include fine blown and cut ware and every type of engraved and decorated glass known in the Victorian era. Also discussed is colored glass, especially ruby, which was most famous. Illustrated with black and white photographs, etchings, and line drawings, this authoritative, out-of-print reference book is one of the leading references on the subject of Cambridge glass. 5.7" x 8" hardback with dust cover in very good+ condition. 199 pages.        Hardcover book written by Arlen Palmer and published by the Winterthur Museum. This comprehensive study of glass used or made in America from the middle of the seventeenth century to the middle of the nineteenth century is divided into three parts: essays, catalogue entries, and appendixes. Each of the 423 objects in the catalogue is illustrated as close to actual size as page height permits. The seven essays that open the book move from a survey of glassmaking in Europe and the colonies to a brief history of the acquisition of glass by Henry Francis du Pont, whose collection at Winterthur is the basis for this book, and the acquisition and display of glass by the curators at Winterthur following the opening of the museum to the public in 1951. In the second part of the book, the catalogue section, the specifics on each piece of glass are presented. Using a novel approach based on function - drinking vessels, food service, ornamental vases and desk accessories, lighting devices, bottles and flasks, and a miscellaneous category that ranges from windowpanes to bird fountains - rather than geographic region or date, the author builds a story that incorporates data on use and manufacture of glass of each type as well as provenance of each piece. The approach allows the reader to comprehend how forms could persist over a broad span of time and understand how and why objects made hundreds of miles apart (by mobile glassworkers who took their tools with them when they changed jobs) can look strikingly similar. The 78 objects in the 24 color plates were selected to illustrate similarities in the colors of glass produced in different geographic locations and at various moments in time.   This beautifully color-illustrated series of 4 volumes presents examples and history of the glass company on Massachusetts' Cape Cod which made the name "Sandwich" famous. Factory records and glassmakers and decorators have been meticulously studied to write this fascinating history. Volumes 1 and 2 are being written. Volume 3 and 4 are now available. Volume 3 presents a foreword by Richard Carter Barret and accounts of the Boston and Sandwich Glass Company between 1858 and 1882, the Cape Cod Glass Works 1858-1864, and the Cape Cod Glass Company 1864-1869. Sandwich Glass objects are grouped into chapters on vases and flower containers, cologne bottles, witch balls, toys, and specialized containers. A full discussion of Nicholas Lutz's work at Sandwich is an important part of this volume. Volume 4 presents 391 examples of Sandwich glass together with forewords by Richard A. Bourne and George Michael and chapters on the late phases of the Boston and Sandwich, Cape Cod, and Vasa Murrhina Glass Companies. Nehemiah Packwoods and J.B. Vodon glass cutters are presented with many examples. Candlesticks, insulators, frosted ware, late blown ware, threaded and epergne forms are each grouped together and many forms of each are shown.  This sumptuous volume surveys spectacular creations from the first four decades of the 20th century, when the renowned Paris-based firm known as Cartier expanded to London and New York. Specially taken photographs present a breathtaking array of necklaces, bracelets, brooches, and rings, as well as cigarette cases, clocks, and objets d'art. 450+ illustrations, 350 in color. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

This is the latest in a series of books, in fact the third book of a trilogy, on the Blenko Glass Company. The glass shown in this book was designed by John Nickerson and Don Shepard and they continued the strong modern designs that made Blenko so popular in the 50's and 60's. The book has color reproductions of the catalogs published by Blenko from 1972 to 1983. Color reproduction and detail is excellent and each piece is shown with its stock number and measurements. There is also a chronology of the company, a brief introduction and current pricing of the hundreds of items shown. Hardcover, 160 pages, 8 3/4" x 11 1/4". It remains one of the few glass factories in the United States still making modern hand blown production glass. Recently, collectors have been scooping up Blenko designs from the company's middle years of production, the 1950s and 1960s. Three outstanding designers were responsible for the entire design repertoire of that era--Winslow Anderson, Wayne Husted, and Joel Myers. Over 675 color photographs of Blenko glass (courtesy of Blenko Visitor’s Center Museum, the Huntington Museum of Art, and private collections), detailed captions, information about the designers, the never-before-published 1960 catalog, bibliography, and index make this book a valuable reference.     Hard cover book published by Schiffer book in 2001 - ISBN: 0764313576 - Size: 8 1/2" x 11" - Illustrations: 308 color photos, Pages: 160 Electrical lighting fixtures from the 1920s through 1940s reflect the popular taste for Art Deco styling in public, commercial, and home interiors. Fixtures shown include radio and accent lamps, boudoir lamps, wall sconces, ceiling fixtures, bridge lamps, torchieres, and smoking stands. Glass shades from the period are highly prized today for their diverse and exquisite designs. This book will be a constant reference for architects, designers, lighting collectors, dealers, and theater historians because it shows so many diverse examples, relates their specific details clearly, and includes values in today’s competitive marketplace.     From the Victorian era and Louis Comfort Tiffany's Art Nouveau masterpieces to the mid-century designs of Jean Schlumberger and the contemporary triumphs of Elsa Peretti and Paloma Picasso, Tiffany's 20th Century offers a stunning portrait of American design and style as epitomized by Tiffany & Co. 260 illustrations, 240 in color. This book contains lots and lots of photographs from the early printed advertisements to present. In fact, there are more photographs here than text.
