Common Wild Swan and Bewick's Swan. Beautifully mounted. Excellent condition. Common Wild Swan was purchased from W. Graham Arader in 1982, and Bewick's Swan was purchased from Shreve, Crump & Low in 1990. Frames measure 28.5 x 34; images measure  20 x 25.25. Prideaux John Selby created his large scale engravings during the same period that Audubon was publishing his famous Birds of North America. Both worked with the Scottish engraver W.H. Lizars. A highly skilled engraver himself, Selby utilized Lizars' talents only for the printing and coloring of his exquisite copper plates. At age 14, Lear began his career as an artist. About 1828, Lear began work as a zoological draughtsman, working with, among other notables, Prideaux John Selby. It was there he also met John Gould, the Societyıs taxidermist, who became one of the great 19th century naturalist publishers. Western India Bombay pierced carved rosewood cabinet c1870. The front of the cabinet is serpentine shaped, over overhanging top with a serpentine shaped back-splash. The back-splash contains a central double bird with leaves and berries. The base of the cabinet is applied with a deep carved and pierced apron, the front framed within the heads of beasts at the base of the columns. It's a rectangular table with leaves rising out from the sides to allow opposing legs to fold out & support the leaves.  It's very fine quality, heavy mahogany in excellent condition. Anglo-Indian Western India  hand carved rosewood Davenport desk from Bombay India circa 1860-1870. Birds and snakes are finely carved in an all over design. The desk has a pierced carved gallery over the hand tooled leather topped writing slope, with four interior drawers. The body is raised on two front carved winged bird with snake columns, backed by carved case holding a secret pen drawer on side, which is activated by puling the interior bottom left drawer pull. The pen drawer pops out and hinges over a door holding four drawers, all over ornately carved dog feet. Measures 52.75 inches to top of its back splash, 24 inches deep, 24 inches wide and 33.5 inches to the middle of its writing surface. Excellent condition, original finish.  Vintage Nathan Margolis furniture solid mahogany dish top snakefoot candlestand c1938.This table is an exact vintage copy of a period American 18th century candlestand. Even in its day it was a very expensive table to reproduce because of its dish top. Dish top tables are created from a solid piece of mahogany. The entire top is one piece unlike less expensive pieces that were made with applied top molding. This table was made from perfectly matched mahogany. The base has what is called a snake foot design. Each leg is hand dovetailed into the center turning. Measures 26 inches high, 20 inches across its top.The Margolis burn with border brand with border marking was used from about 1937 until 1941. The Margolis furniture store was in Hartford CT and was in operation during the early 20th century. They reproduced the finest examples of period 18th and early 19thc American furniture designs for their wealthy clients.

This is an English George III period mahogany round tilt-top tea table with an urn shaped pedestal.  It has lovely original color & patina, & it measures 29" diameter x 28 1/2" high.  Circa 1780  The table was reduced in price from $1850.  This rare Victorian walnut cylinder desk c1885 belonged to Connecticut Governor Henry Roberts B 1853 D 1929. Roberts became alderman of Hartford, Connecticut in 1897. He became a member of the Connecticut House of Representatives in 1899. He held that position till 1901. He also was a member of the Connecticut State Senate from 1901 to 1902. He became lieutenant governor of Connecticut in 1903. He held that position till 1905. He became the 44th Governor of Connecticut on January 4, 1905. Provenance supplied to buyer.This desk measures 36 inches wide, 76 inches to top of back, 30 inches to the writing surface and 22.5 inches deep. All original including finish. Even the felt writing surface that retains its surface marks and stains from the Governors constant use is original. This desk has the best interior we ever seen in a cylinder desk from this period. It has birdseye maple drawer fronts surrounded by rosewood with rosewood drawer knobs. Fine hand cut dovetailed drawers and frame joints. This stunning piece of American Victorian furniture was with out a doubt a special order, made by one of the important New York cabinet makers on Broad Street. Shipping extra.
