Art Deco Thonet furniture, This set was made by "Thonet " Michael Thonet began as a German cabinetmaker in 1830. He developed his groundbreaking process to steam and bend wood about 5 years later, and spent years perfecting it. He established a firm devoted to producing bentwood furniture in Vienna in 1849. He died in 1871, but his line continued and expanded under the direction of his sons. The Thonet line is best known for its graceful curvilinear Art Nouveau designs, produced at the turn of the nineteenth century, and for its highly sophisticated Art Deco designs of the nineteen-twenties.

A brief history of this desk: The "Bureau du Roi" ('King's Desk'), known in France as the "Secrétaire à cylindre de Louis XV" ("Louis XV Roll-Top Secretary"), is the name given to the richly ornamented royal Cylinder desk whose construction was started under Louis XV and finished under Louis XVI of France. It is the most lavishly decorated desk ever made, surpassing even the huge corative "Kunstschrank" secretary desks of Germany.
