Knife rests were part of the Victorian convention of one more things to add to the table setting, along with fish knives and lettuce forks and individual asparagus tongs. Knife rests were designed especially for the master of the house to rest his carving knife and fork on after carving a portion and placing on a plate to hand to one of his guests. The host would of course be at the head of the table unless he discharged this task to his butler who would possibly do the carving on the sideboard. Either way the table or sideboard would need protecting with a set of two quite large knife rests. In some more wealthy establishments there were also a set of knife rests at each diners chair placing. Knife rests were often in cut glass to match the rest of the glassware or salts on the table. The purpose of the knife rest was to keep the table linen clean, of course, but the knives were only placed on the rests when dirty. You would never begin a meal with the knives on a knife rest. During the meal, the dinner knife was properly placed on your plate between bites. Only when the plate was removed between courses was the knife placed on the knife rest Shipping extra. He designed this valet stand as a utilitarian homage to the Scots architect Charles Rennie MacIntosh for the 1986 Architectural League of New York show '397 Chairs,' held at the IDC.His imagined client for the piece was a person with too much wardrobe but not enough closet space, or simply an inability to put things away. The central coathanger section and the ladder frames stepping away at both sides provide plenty of options for draping clothes whiler still maintaining their sparsely elegant appearance. One of his unable-to-put-anything-away friends was inspired to title the stand a "Throne for the Disheveled."It is assembled from matte-black painted birch dowels of several diameters and hand-turned black-lacquered ash knobs, 'shoulders,' and seat, on which the grain of the wood is highlighted with Chinese red lacquer. It was crafted by the Hoboken NJ custom furniture partnership Moss/Fauset. We, also, have two pair of larger hand tiebacks on the site. This pair features the hand holding roses, a decorative bracelet on the arm and a softly draped dress sleeve at the end of the piece. Excellent condition, this pair measures 7 1/2 inches long, 3 inches wide on the sleeve end and 2 inches wide at the hand. Very minimal wear. While there is no registry mark on this pair they are, most certainly, from the same period as the larger ones or mid-nineteenth century.  We are pleased to offer these extremely rare brass hand tiebacks. The registry mark on the back dates them from Nov. 21, 1845. These exquisite and intricately detailed decorative accessories make a commanding statement. Each hand holds a sprig of leaves with berries. A bracelet, of the period, is at the wrist and the end of the arm has a realistically ruffled dress sleeve. Condition is excellent with minor, but age appropriate, surface wear. The hand is 10 inches long, 3 1/2 inches wide at the sleeve and 2 1/2 inches at the hand. Outstanding.
