Washington was well known for their beautiful Burmese glass.

Guba was the best known designer and decorated associated with Pairpoint. His ducks in flight were a well known design of his. These ducks are exceptional with superior detail and coloring. The back of the lamp has enamelled cattails and reeds - the sides being enhanced with a few well placed water lilies. There is no evidence of a signature unless it is on the bottom which is not visible, however, the ducks are clearly Guba's work. The condition of the lamp is excellent. There is no damage to the glass and the painting is intact. The lamp measures 27" to the top of the finial. The glass body is 11 1/2 inches high. Extraordinary piece!

THE ELEGANT EPERGNE: FROM THE BUNNY AND CHARLES KOPPELMAN COLLECTION with essays by Jane Shadel Spillman, Harry N. Abrams, Inc., Publishers, NY, 1995.

'The dramatic tiered centerpieces of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries are coming back into favor. Today, the term epergne designates both the tiered, ornate silver and glass centerpieces of the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries and the glass flower and fruit stands so in favor during the nineteenth… [This book] features more than 80 of these glorious objects, all specially photographed for this book, in settings both sumptuous and relaxed. Many are also shown in close-up views. Room interiors in "The Elegant Epergne" suggest a number of ideas for decorating with these versatile containers—on a mantle, beside the tub, or even in a child’s nursery, where they may be filled with the smallest, sweetest bouquets. Because they can be used to dress a table, ornament a shelf, or display flowers, epergnes make handsome additions to any home. Particular emphasis is given to the many kinds of flowers suitable for epergnes, including roses, sweet peas, lisianthus, poppies, ranunculus, and dahlias, most of which can be grown or found for sale in cities large and small. Many of the epergnes shown here were made in England around the turn of the century; also included are some later American pieces from the Boston & Sandwich Glass Company as well as those produced by Steuben and Fenton. Each piece is described in full detail, including maker and technical workmanship. A nearly encyclopedic range of epergnes is offered; the more typical clear or cranberry glass; Burmese peach-blow; richly hued glass, some with unusual shading around the fluted rims; silver bases or ones fitted with beveled mirrors; hanging baskets, including some in the shape of flowers; and gilt metal and silver fittings. For budding collectors, epergnes are found not only in the auction houses and dealers' shops, but in the flea markets as well.' This book will as easily decorate the coffee table as enhance the reference library; it will provide a pictorial journey through the world of little-known epergnes to delight collectors, interior decorators and art glass enthusiasts.

NINETEENTH CENTURY GLASS - Its Genius and Development. By Albert Christian, Schiffer Publishing Ltd., PA, 1959/1967.

The author covers each of the important types of nineteenth century art glass in definitive chapters and explains their history and the details of their manufacture. Similarities in wares produced by various manufacturers in America and Europe, means of identification, and modern imitations and developments are discussed along with many other topics of great interest to the collector.

Glass types include amberina, Alexandrite, aventurine, shaded opalescent, Burmese, peach blow, agata, pomona, Crown Milano, Albertine, Royal Flemish, Napoli, Verona, silveria, lava, Pate de Verre, onyx, cluthra, cameo glass, cut, engraved and etched glassware, threaded and spun glass, and more. Manufacturers include Tiffany, Steuben, Smith Brothers, Mt. Washington, Libbey, C.F. Monroe, Northwood School, Richardson & Atterbury, Lechevrel-Locke School, Woodall School, Daum Brothers, Galle, and more. This rare book, which is a scholarly survey of most of the art glass types, belongs in the permanent reference library of the student, advanced collector, or historian of nineteenth century American and European art glass.
