GLASS – ART NOUVEAU TO ART DECO by Victor Arwas, Rizzoli International Publications, Inc., NY 1977.

'The development of cameo carving in England heralded an international golden age of glass. Craftsmen, designers and artists vied with each other to create new and beautiful forms and colors, researching new and complex techniques, developing rare skills and achieving extraordinary effects. Art Nouveau and Symbolism provided the artistic foundations for such creators as Galle, the Daum brothers, Tiffany and Loetz to produce consistently new and exciting wares. As artistic movements changed Art deco and Functionalism succeeded as the stylistic vehicles for many new creators.'

'This book is the first to collect and evaluate the considerable amount of valuable research previously carried out on the glass producers of the time. All valuable information on the most important and a large number of lesser known but interesting glassworkers is here carefully weighed and presented, from the English cameo artists of the mid-nineteenth century to those glass designers and glasshouses of France, Belgium, the Netherlands, Bohemia, Germany, Austria, Italy, Sweden, the united stets and Russia still producing at the outbreak of war in 1939. Wherever individuals or firms survived the war their story has been brought up to date. The historical background and development of each designer and firm is followed by a description of their styles and techniques and an evaluation of their achievement, all profusely illustrated by photographs of their work. The clear and comprehensive presentation of material together with the many superbly reproduced illustrations, the majority of which were commissioned especially for this book, make this an essential reference work invaluable to collectors, as well as for those with a more general interest in the period and its glass. There are 316 illustrations, 104 in full color.'

'Written in a clean, simple, direct style THE ART OF FRENCH GLASS is a visual experience, as well as an invaluable reference volume.' 300 illustrations, 118 in full color, and a technical glossary support this expert coverage of the art of French glass.

THE ART OF FRENCH GLASS: 1860-1914 by Janine Bloch-Dermant, The Vendome Press, NY and Paris, 1974/1980, translated by Marian Burleigh-Motley.

Makers pictured and discussed include Philippe-Joseph Brocard, Auguste Jean, Francois-Eugene Rousseau, Amedee de Caranza, Ernest-Baptiste Leveille, Eugene Michel, lphonse-Georges Reyen, Les Freres Pannier, Emile Galle, Les Freres Daum, Les Freres Muller, Henri Cros, Albert Dammouse, Ringel d’Illzach, Georges Despret, Francois Decorchemont, and others.

The outstanding French Art Nouveau artists in glass are discussed here: Eugene Michel, Galle, August and Antonin Daum, and Henri Cros, 'artists who found glass the ideal medium for expressing the spirit of their time…. Their love of craftsmanship, fostered by a guild system that had preserved an ancient and difficult medium, linked them to contemporary science. It also placed them in the vanguard of the Arts and Crafts movement, actually initiated in England by John Ruskin and William Morris, whose goal was to harmonize the useful and the beautiful. In France, the cultural center of 19th-century Europe, all these elements came together in perfect equilibrium to produce the great revival of art glass that occurred from about 1860 to the opening World War I. In this era of unprecedented peace, a steady stream of unique creations in glass—vases, amphora, ewers, ‘boxes,’ and bowls, lamps, reliefs, and sculptures-in-the-round—poured out from the ateliers of Paris and Nancy. Shaped by blowing or molding, even by carving, these wonderful forms are almost always decorated, if not with enamel painting, then with acid etching or wheel engraving, usually into colors in the mass, placed there by ‘laying,’ ‘occlusion’ or ‘applique.’ Richly malleable while hot, then brittle as jewels when cold, the masterpieces of late 19th century French glass are like frozen fire and light, or the infinite meander of Art Nouveau energy suddenly fixed in timeless perfection.' The superb color and black-and-white photographs, in-depth descriptions, and rich narrative combine to make this book an invaluable reference.

'By the terms of a secret contract executed between Desire Christian and Galle in the years 1885-1896, Christian agreed to supply Galle in Nancy with artistically designed and decorated glass vases for the French and world market. During the eleven year life of this secret association, thousands of glass objects produced by Christian were attributed to Emile Galle – a belief that has persisted to this day.'

THE GLASS OF DESIRE CHRISTIAN – GHOST FOR GALLE by Jules S. Traub, The Art Glass Exchange, Chicago, 1978 First Edition.

68 black-and-white and mostly color plates with complete in-depth descriptions illustrate superb examples of the glass of Desire Christian. The narrative in this book is rich and reviews the intriguing relationship between Desire Christian and Emile Galle and the history of their respective firms (Burgun and Schverer and Galle). 'In Christian’s native town of Meisenthal, "everybody" knows that Christian was the artist and Galle the merchant who sold the art glass under the Galle name.' The investigative research and supporting documentation, and the numerous pictured examples of this glass studied by the author, shed a new light on the art glass of Galle. The information in this book is simply fascinating. If you are a collector, dealer, or historian of French art glass, you will want a copy of this rare and wonderfully illustrated book as a part of your permanent reference library.

ART GLASS NOUVEAU by Ray and Lee Grover. Charles E. Tuttle Co., Vermont, 1967/1968.

While every significant type of art glass produced during this period is covered in the succinct text, the exciting galaxy of 424 plates, interspersed throughout the book, were selected not only because of their rare beauty and authenticity, but also to show representative pieces, similar to those that are still available. Book: Charles Schneider Maitre-Verrier. Verreries Schneider France de 1913 a 1940. Le Louvre Des Antiquaires. September 1984. 129pp. 8vo 9.5x8.5. Very important reference and very hard to obtain. Laminated paper cover. Good.  This unsigned Daum Nancy crystal decanter with the fleur de lis shaped cut stopper would be wonderful in any setting or collection. The unique stopper is pictured on page #152 of the Claude Petry Daum dans les Musees de Nancy book of Daum glass. I’ve seen some with gold edging, but there was no indication that this piece ever had any gold trim. Perhaps one could have purchased it with the gilt or without the gilt. 11 9/16" high. 5 1/4" wide. Ground pontil. The crystal has a beautiful clarity accented by the optic ribbed in the body of the glass and the very extraordinary chiseled or hammered effect on the stopper. Truly magnificant.

Note both the silverplate rim and base are impressed with the hallmark V S with the circle of ship in the center of the rectangle. It is thought that acid etched vases like this were ordered from the Daum firm which explains the Cross of Lorraine. The above information was kindly provided by a Belgium gentleman who viewed this item on this site. Glass is a very complicated field of study and I appreciate all the shared information available. This piece is similiar to one by Muller illustrated in Grover's book European Art Glass as well as the vase pictured on page 126 center photo #220C signed with the same V S on bottom and Lorraine signature (Signature #168, page 152 of the French Cameo Glass book by Berniece and Henry Blount) acid etched on side. This is the softest piece of glass I've ever touched. Attributed to J.E. His technique was to treat glass with metallic oxides to create beautiful iridescent glass. It appears to be similiar to Steuben's glass of silk with the addition of the topaz color the same technique as the semi transparent color. He won several gold metals at various exhibitions for his work. This is rare and beautiful.  258. Internally decorated lilac center bowl with amethyst footed base.
