Illustrated with over 600 photographs and patent drawings, this rare out-of-print book is a classic references on the subject of early American cut glass.

AMERICAN CUT GLASS FOR THE DISCRIMINATING COLLECTOR by J. Michael and Dorothy T. Pearson, Vantage Press, NY, 1965.

'The study and enjoyment of American cut and engraved glass of the ‘Brilliant Period’ (1880-1915) is complicated and confused by the fact that so many thousands of patterns were cut, most of which were not distinguishable from the other as so many pieces were produced with inferior quality. To select with discrimination that which is worthy, to illustrated and analyze plainly and lucidly to give factual information and background without a boring recital of trivia, to re-create and re-capture the aura of aesthetic values that inspired the American artist-designers and master craftsmen – these are the objects that have motivated the authors of this book.'

The book covers by chapter: Glass and Its Early History; Cut and Engraved Glass in America (1812-1915); Manufacture of Glass (1880-1915); Cutting and Engraving During the 'Brilliant Period'; The Aesthetic Appreciation of Cut Glass as an Art; How to Collect American Cut Glass; The Care and Display of Fine Cut Glass; Terminology (with Motifs Illustrated); List of Pattern Illustrations by Plate Number; Patterns (1-95); Unusual Patterns; Examples of Early and Middle Period; Cut Glass Houses (History – Examples of Design); Cameo Glass (American, French, English); Rarities in Cut Glass; Cut Glass by Categories (baskets, bottles, bowls, boxes, cabinet pieces, candlesticks, colored, cruets, decanters, goblets, jars, knife rests, lamps, miniature and whimsies, napkin rings, pitchers, stemware, sugar and creamer sets, trays, tumblers, and vase); Trademarks; and Index. 'One of the most valuable features of this book is the fact that most of the better cut glass patterns can be identified and related to the basic patterns pictures.' As a privately published book, you will find few copies of this text in circulation. This book is a collector’s item in itself and would make a fine addition to the reference library of the serious collector, dealer, or historian of American cut glass of the 'Brilliant Period.'

Considered the bible of American antique cut and engraved glass, this early out-of-print book is Volume I of a three-part book set. 1Together the three volumes constitute the most complete pictorial record ever published of the glass of the Brilliant Period (1880-1917). The Encyclopedia constitutes the only schematic plan ever devised for quickly locating and identifying cut glass patterns on the basis of observing the cutting of the glass itself.'

ENCYCLOPEDIA OF AMERICAN CUT AND ENGRAVED GLASS (1880-1917) VOLUME I—GEOMETRIC CONCEPTIONS by J.Michael Pearson, self-published by the author, Miami Beach, FL, 1975.

This volume contains over 700 illustrations that identify over 400 patterns by name and more than 450 by manufacturer.

Contents by chapter include Trade Advertisements; Plagiarism of Patterns; Geometric Conception Index; Candlesticks; Trademarks—American and Canadian; and American and Canadian Cut Glass Firms and Outlets. The chapter entitled ''Life Among the Antiquarians' will delight readers with its humor and create nostalgia for collectors who have perchance experienced many of the phenomena described: Innocent Humor, An Antique Dealer’s Quotable Quotes, It Pays to Advertise—or Does It? The Catalogue List, Buy at Depressed Prices from Depressed Dealers, The Anniversary Gift, Earthquake in California, the Cut Glass Vase, and The Pragmatism of George Bernard Shaw. The comedy and tragedy captured by the anecdotes in this volume make for a book that is more than a collector’s guide—a book to be savored by antiquarians and antique-hunters over and over again.

IDENTIFYING AMERICAN BRILLIANT CUT GLASS by Bill and Louise Boggess, Schiffer Publishing Ltd., PA, 1984.

'The authors of the best-selling 'American Brilliant Cut Glass' have now written a new book that is not only a basic reference book but an identification guide to take with you to auctions, shows, exhibits, and antique shops. In it they give the beginner and advanced cut glass collector and dealer many invaluable facts, research and information not before available: the catalog name for various shapes in cut glass and the identity of 280 patterns of American and Canadian glass by catalog name, patterns not previously identified. It points out 130 cut glass pieces by company signature, patent record, and magazine advertisement. In addition this new volume shows you how to analyze a pattern by finding the miter outline and matching it and the motifs to an illustration or picture in a catalog or book. It gives practical advice in buying and collecting unidentified pieces and answers questions on acid polish, repairs, investments, insurance, upgrading, and selling a collection. The 843 exquisite photographs are all new and taken expressly for the book. No collector, dealer, or appraiser will want to be without this indispensable volume.'

AMERICAN BRILLIANT CUT GLASS. By Bill and Louise Boggess, Crown Publishers, NY, 1977 First Edition.

This comprehensive book is a collector’s guide, with over 600 pieces of cut glass illustrated and described. In addition to identifying this art glass by catalog name and manufacturer, this informative text also reviews signatures. The black-and-white illustrated pieces represent the sort all collectors can find today rather than museum rarities. Most important – to both the novice and advanced collector – this text tells how and where to find and recognize genuine old cut glass in today’s era of misleading imports and reproductions. The problem of repairing cut glass is examined in detail, and the book provides simple clues for detecting mismatched pieces (lids and covers, stoppers, and underplates that do not belong together), since both repairs and 'marriages' detract from value. The book covers by chapter: Crystal Gazing; Artistry in Glass; Identification by Motif; Identification by Pattern; Identification by Signature; The Buying Game; Evaluating Cut Glass; and Helpful Tips for the Collector. The Appendix includes: Signatures, and Index of Illustrated Patterns. All in all, no collector, dealer, or appraiser will want to be without this helpful pictorial guide to antique American brilliant cut glass.
