The author 'has produced, in this volume, a comprehensive history of the development of glass paperweights which will prove useful for those having both large and small collections. He fully covers the three great houses of Baccarat, St. Louis, and Clichy. In addition there are chapters on American and English makers as well as other makers in Europe and Asia. A wealth of both color and black-and-white illustrations provides a complete coverage of the subject in text and pictures. This will certainly prove an invaluable volume for anyone who has become captivated by the charm and beauty of these small glass objects.'

PAPERWEIGHTS AND OTHER GLASS CURIOSITIES by E.M. Elville, Spring Books, London 1954/1967.

The author provides a concise review of the history of paperweights and the technique of their manufacture, illustrating his text with some of the finest specimens of this very specialized craft. He rightly devotes much attention to the superb weights, which come from the famous French factories of Baccarat, St.Louis and Clichy, and traces the development of paperweight manufacturing down to the present time. His classification and descriptions of the different types of weights – millefiori, flower weights, rare subject weights, overlays, magnums and miniatures – are of the greatest value for all serious collectors. Under the terms "curiosities" and occupying the latter half of this fascinating text, Mr. Elville reviews fashionable English Victorian glass, and groups such collector’s items as glass clock lamps, candlesticks, candelabras, sconces, mirrors and drinking glasses, especially from the 18th century; and he rounds the book off with a discussion of interesting miscellaneous items such as fingerbowls, jelly-glasses, marbles and coloured lustres. This scarce book is an indispensable reference for the collector, dealer, or historian of paperweights and English Victorian art glass.
