SILVER MARKS OF THE WORLD by Jan Divis, Hamlyn, NY,1976/1977.

'Starting from the letters or symbols constituting the mark, the reader can quickly identify the country and town of origin, the date when the mark was used and often the purity of the silver. The book illustrated nearly 2,000 marks arranged under letters in alphabetical order, numerals, human figures, mammals, birds, plants, heavenly bodies, etc., so that any of the marks can be easily found.'

'The introduction describes the various systems in force in each country since the first known records. There is also a bibliography for each country, to guide the reader who needs more detailed or specialist information. With its mass of information in an easy-to-use arrangement, this handbook is a thoroughly practical guide for everyone.'

G. and A. W Reeve London.Published may 21st 1840 The wooden paddle steamer 'Great Western' was built by William Patterson and Company, Bristol, for the Great Western Steam Ship Company of that port. On completion she was the first true ocean-going steamship and the largest steamer in the world. Designed for the transatlantic trade by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, she completed her first Atlantic crossing in April 1838 just hours after the 'Sirius', carrying just seven passengers and a small amount of cargo. 'Great Western', and not 'Sirius', would thence provide the first regular passenger and cargo service on this route. Sailing initially from Bristol, then from Liverpool, she was for several years the most popular and successful steamer on the Atlantic. In 1847 she was sold to the Royal Mail Steam Packet Company for service on its Southampton-West Indies mail run. In 1856 she was chartered by the Admiralty for troop transport. She twice carried men, horses and equipment to the Black Sea. She was sold to shipbreakers in 1857 and scrapped at Vauxhall, on the Thames. Aquatint after a painting by Joseph Walter engraved by R.G & A.W REEVE LONDON. In a period oak wedge frame.

The title reads, in part, " In Commemoration of the Establishment of Steam Navigation Between Great Britain and America. This Engraving of the Magnificent Steam Ship The Great Western. Lieut. James Hosken R. N. Commander taking her departure from Bristol for New York has been prepared." ANTIQUE SILVER SERVERS FOR THE DINING TABLE by Benton Seymour Rabinovitch, Joslin Hall Publishing, MA, 1991.

'Silver serving pieces are both important examples of dining table accoutrements as well as some of the most beautiful and striking products of the silversmith’s art. They first came into prominence in the early eighteenth century as an accompaniment of the development of table cutlery and the refinement of dining practices. They comprise a host of implements including fish, pudding, cake, tart, asparagus, salad, chop, sandwich, entrée, cheese, butter, and other servers. In this monograph, the author discusses the historical origins and the functional and stylist development of broad-bladed antique silver servers in the period 1700-1900. Connections are made to the foods, culinary and social customs, and to the societal background of the times and their evolution…. British articles are thoroughly covered. Comparisons to, and differences from European and American developments are delineated….This book represents the first comprehensive treatment of the subject and will be of interest to collectors of silver, to metalsmiths, to persons in the culinary professions, and to students of the decorative arts and of social history.'

This wonderful hand made hand hewed console table was made from a single 18th century pine board with straight tapered legs, bread board ends and wooden pin construction by a local master craftsman. We have a master craftsman that has agreed to painstakingly make hand made tables in the Early American 18th century manner. These are tables who's size and quality and design we can just not find in our daily searches for fine antiques. They are made by hand with antique block planes which give that lovely hand hewed look. Each tables size is determined by the size of the 18th century board we find, no two will be the same. Early boards have the most beautiful deep rich patina which simply can not be duplicated with new boards. The top board retains all its original wear which gives it the true period look that is the most desirable. This table measures 65 inches long,18 inches deep, and 30 inches high Shipping extra. COLLECTORS’ GUIDE TO ANTIQUE AMERICAN SILVER: History, Style and Identification by Marvin D. Schwartz, Bonanza Books, N.Y. 1975/1982, discusses how, in view of various international influences, American silver represents a uniquely American approach to silversmithing.

'Silverwork from the colonial and early Federal periods was a fresh interpretation of London fashions, known for its simplicity and purity of design….Whether one is interested in the history of silver or in purchasing and collecting any sort of silverwork, this book is a delightful and instructive guide.' In addition to chapters devoted to period styles—rococo, neo-classic, Victorian, and modern, there is a chapter on identifying American silver and an appended list of prominent American silversmiths and manufacturers. This little book has a useful bibliography and index plus more than one hundred black and white illustrations, making it a valuable addition to the reference library of those who admire and collect American silver.

OLD ENGLISH PLATE: Ecclesiastical, Decorative, and Domestic: Its Makers and Marks by Wilfred Joseph Cripps, Spring Books, London, 1878/1967.

'The title is misleading; the book covers not only England, but also Scotland and Ireland, with some reference to French trade guilds. It is carefully organized, beginning with an introductory survey of gold and silver, which have been prized for many centuries. The various alloys – so necessary but tempting to the fraudulent – are carefully explained. Subsequent chapters cover the history of the goldsmiths’ and silversmiths’ crafts, with the complex legislation associated with them, followed by extensive descriptions of the articles themselves, from communion cups to cake-baskets, many of which are illustrated. One of the most valuable features is the exhaustive treatment of plate marks, over 2,600 of which are illustrated. The book ends with a useful index, which not only covers the subject-matter of the various chapters, but also contains key references to many plate marks, thus being an extremely helpful aid to identification.' This text is an invaluable resource reference for the collector, dealer, or historian of antique silver and gold plate metal wares.
