(1749-1806) A prominent British Whig statesman. He was the arch rival of William Pitt the Younger. He was known as a forceful and eloquent speaker while a prominent member of the House of Commons. During the American Revolution his opinions in Parliament were some of the most radical. He became a staunch opponent of King George III, whom he regarded as a tyrant, and consequently supported the revolutionaries in America, even dressing up in the colors of George Washington's army. Served as Britain's first Foreign Secretary.
