Ashanti Chieftain's chair of wood and stretched hide, with hammered brass tack and bell shape applied decorations. This 19th century chair from the Ghana, in western Africa, shows in its form the influence of the Portuguese traders who were actively trading in the region in the 17th century. These chairs in original condition are rarely found. The Ashanti tribe is the largest tribe in Ghana, and one of the few matrilineal societies in Africa. Ashanti kings retained figurehead status after colonization, and even today great pride in the Ashanti King lives on in the tradition of the golden stool. This chair is all original. This was a threat to the Church of England whose Parish Church was All Saints at Ledsham. It was decided to build a church at Fairburn and in 1846 the present church, dedicated to St. James, was built.The tall candlesticks in the chancel had the base and top made from "Oak and bell metal of York Minster, Burnt May 20, 1840". These words are engraved on the metal of the candle holder. This pair of candlesticks have been electrified and made into lamps but could be easily put back to their original state. Each candlestick measures 15 inches high. They measure 24 and one half inches to the top of their shades. The brass bobeche is inscribed Oak and bell metal of York Minster, Burnt May 20, 1840. NOTE: We do not know if this is the exact pair mentioned in the above article or if more than one pair was made from oak and bell metal at that time. In any case, this pair is original and extremely rare.

Etching depicting a view of the Grand Cascade at Tivoli titled 'Veduta Della Cascata Di Tivoli' done by Giovanni Piranesi in 1766.  


The etching plate image measures 28"w x 19"h.  The full sheet measures 33"w x 23"h.


The etching has been laid down on a stiff paperboard backing.  The impression is nice with some even toning of the white color which is more tanned on the upper left corner.


There is a small circular impressed stamp on the lower right corner of the image and border which contains a crown in the center and 'Calcografia Di Roma Regia' around the crown.   Chinese export orange peel platter c1820 to1830. This Chinese Export Platter has a gray white glaze and a pronounced orange peel surface with a rim design trimmed in gold. Excellent original condition.
