Wet plate, albumen photograph, mounted to 4 1/4 x 6 1/2 card. Chest up view in civilian attire. Signed in ink on the front mount, Albert R. Anderson, Iowa. No backmark. Light age toning. Very fine.

Albert R. Anderson, was a 23 year old resident of Clarinda, Iowa when he enlisted on August 10, 1861, as a sergeant, and was mustered into Co. K, 4th Iowa Infantry. He was promoted to 1st lieutenant, May 12, 1862; captain, March 19, 1863; major, April 5, 1864; lieutenant colonel, June 10, 1865; and was mustered out of the Union army, July 24, 1865, at Louisville, Ky.

During his time with the hard fought 4th Iowa Infantry, they saw action at Chickasaw Bayou, Arkansas Post, Fort Hindman, Vicksburg, Jackson, Lookout Mountain, Missionary Ridge, Resaca, Marietta, Kenesaw Mountain, Atlanta, Jonesboro, Lovejoy Station, Savannah, and in the 1865 Carolina's campaign.

In describing the ordeal faced by the 4th Iowa Infantry at Kenesaw Mountain, one of Major Anderson's men from Co. K, Private John Arbuckle, wrote the following: "The most severe and trying experience of the campaign were those we endured in the trenches in front of Kenesaw. For 26 days, 17 of which were days of continuous rain, we never had our clothes off, or a chance to wash, save dipping up muddy water in the trenches or little driblets from our canteens; never had a cooked meal, and rarely even a cup of hot coffee. During these 26 days in the trenches, at no time was it safe to venture out of them, as strongly fortified lines were in front and above us, extending along the whole length of the mountain. Our only chance for sleep was to make the best of the mudbedraggled trenches, or, perchance, in the deep darkness creep out to lie down on the water soaked earth. Such was our condition and personal appearance from grime, mud and burnt powder that we were all but a fright to ourselves, the main thing was to keep our guns in good working order and our ammunition dry."

A 10,690 ton broadside ironclad war ship, she was built at Blackwall, England, and was one of six vessels that were built to the original British concept of an armored battleship. A very long and relatively fast iron hulled steamer, carrying an extensive sail rig and a large battery of medium sized guns, she was also one of three ships with five masts, and her gun deck was almost completely coated with iron armor. Her keel was laid in 1861, she was launched in December 1863, and was decommissioned in 1887.

(1835-93) In July 1861, he was appointed major of the 6th Iowa Infantry and served on the staff of General John Pope during the early operations in Mississippi. Promoted to colonel, he demonstrated conspicuous gallantry at Corinth and in the Vicksburg campaign, after which he was promoted to brigadier general. Corse was badly wounded at the battle of Chattanooga but returned in time to participate in the Atlanta campaign. He was the hero of the battle of Allatoona Pass in which S.G. French's Confederate division attempted to dislodge Corse's men from blockhouses designed to protect the Western and Atlantic Railroad. According to many accounts, no more severe fighting was ever experienced by men in Sherman's army; leaving 1,500 dead and wounded. Corse telegraphed Sherman, "I am short of a cheekbone, and one ear, but am able to whip all hell yet!" He went on to take part in "The March to the Sea" and the Carolina campaign.
