There are two… one has long hair and the other short hair.

I am selling them as a set

I believe these to be actual late 18th century or early 19th century Sicilian Rod Puppets.

Both are different sizes…one BODY is 25 inches tall without the rod.

The other is 24 inches tall without the rod.

Their rods are attached as you can see in the photos.

They are made of wood, metal and cloth and I believe the hand-painted faces and the hands are made of wood.

Condition…need to be restrung and the garments are original but are brittle cloth.

(that doesn’t bother me because they are original)

POST-WAR TIN TOYS: A COLLECTOR’S GUIDE by Jack Tempest, Wallace-Homestead Book Co., Penn., 1991.

'This invaluable guide covers, section by section, the space toys and robots, motor vehicles, boots and aircraft, character toys, tinplate figures, and trains produced in the post-war years. A comprehensive initial chapter provides a wealth of detail on collecting and collectors and points the reader to other sources of information, such as old trade brochures and advertising pamphlets, which prove invaluable in identifying objects. Advice is given on where to discover hard-to-find toys, what t look for in terms of quality and how to ensure authenticity….'

'[The book] includes some revealing special features on current-day revivals, theme collecting and the various mechanisms that power the amazing walking, talking, musical and acrobatic tinplate novelty toys. A valuable appendix presents, in chart form, a list of post-war manufacturers, detailing provenance and trademarks; international toy museums; the major collectors’ fairs in the UK, Europe and the United States; and a comprehensive bibliography. A fascinating price guide gives up-to-date values for all the toys illustrated.' With 200 illustrations, all in vibrant color, this visual appealing guide would make a fine addition to the permanent reference library of the collector, dealer, or historian of antique toys.

Featuring 'over 150 beautiful color illustrations' this book is a fine reference source for collectors of antique metal toys. It gives 'practical advice on main collecting areas, how to avoid expensive mistakes, how to care for old toys and how to spot the work of the most famous makers; this guide is expertly written and is an essential companion to anyone collecting old toys or wishing to start a collection. Toy collecting has rapidly increased in popularity over the last few years, record sales being reported internationally. The universal appeal is, in part, due to the widely varied categories of toys available. There is something for everybody. In this book we look at probably the most collectible areas within this vast area, from the more expensive categories such as automata made in 19th century France by such famous makers as Theroude, Decamps and Lambert to modern day metal soldiers. Whatever your first love, railways, toy soldiers, automata or die cast toys, you will be enthralled by the collection shown and described here of all Metal Toys and thankful for the valuable advice.'

TIN TOYS: 1945-1975 . By Michael Buhler, (this edition by) Mandarin Publishers, Hong Kong, 1978.

After the Second World War, the US Zone of Occupation included Nuremburg, the site of several toy factories. American companies contracted with these early German toy makers to produce wares for American toy markets. This book tells the story of the Americanization of some aspects of European and Japanese cultures through the toy-making industries with American children in mind. 'With names like Gunthermann, Arnold, Gama, Gescha, Technofix, Tipp, Kellerman, Distler and Sehuco, the German toy industry flourished throughout the forties and fifties; exporting the US and the rest of the world.' This beautifully illustrated book—all in vivid color—shows cars, trams, airplanes, trains, police motorcycles, trucks and accessories. The collection is mainly comprised to what used to be thought of a 'toys for boys,' but also includes clowns and other figures. It traces the increasing mechanization of toys and the growing sophistication of toys made possible by innovations such as battery operation and radio-control. Authoritatively and enthusiastically presented, this text will make an essential addition to the reference library of toy collectors and aficionados everywhere.

A box adorned with Barbie, the Beatles, or Hopalong Cassidy placed the child squarely with the lunchroom elite, while a dull red plaid revealed a child who was obviously not in control of his or her parents.'

Shepard Hardware Co.,Buffalo NY. "Speaking Dog" Mechanical Bank. 1885. Painted cast iron.

Peter Adams and Charles Shepard Bank. The bank is in her original condition with no restoration.

To operate the bank, depress the lever on the base near the dog, which makes the girl's right arm to move back, dropping the coin placed on the small tray into the seat opening beside her. The dog opens its mouth as if barking and wags its tail. The bank works great.

I do not have a key to open her up. There is some normal paint loss, but otherwise, a nice bank.

It is 7 1/2 inches tall x 7 inches high and is marked with a patent date of July 14, 1885 on the bottom.

Profusely illustrated in color and black-and-white, this early out-of-print book is a pictorial guide to antique teddy bears.

TEDDY BEARS by Philippa & Peter Waring, Treasure Press, London, 1980.

'Ever since the day in 1902 when an American sketching artist drew a whimsical cartoon about President Theodore Roosevelt refusing to shoot a bear cub, and thus provided the inspiration for the invention of ‘Teddy Bear,’ the little furry creature has become a world-wide favorite not only as a plaything, but in books, films, newspapers, comics, on radio and television, in songs, poems, postcards and birthday greetings. This book is a celebration of his remarkable achievement. It is an illustrated survey of his history, a scrapbook of his attainments, and an intimate photograph album. It is an A-Z of the most famous bears in the world, a compendium of the record breakers and a revelation about why Teddy exerts such a fantastic appeal.' Whether a collector, dealer, or admirer of lovable teddy bears, one will want to add this scarce book to their permanent reference library.

A GUIDE TO METAL TOYS by Constance King, JG Press, Inc., North Dighton, MA, 1989.

This book is a fine reference source for collectors of antique metal toys.
