Nice old oval Toleware Tray with Roses (see 2nd photo for close up of design). Measures approx. 19 1/2" X 14". The front of the Tray is very nice and has little, if any, paint loss. The back has a few rust spot (see 3rd photo). I am wondering about the larger spot on the back- if this is where the paper label was and some one took it off roughly. This looks like a Nashco Tray to me and that is where they would have had their label. Hand painted Toleware looks great as a decorating accent and goes with so many types of decor- country, Victorian, traditional, shabby chic and more. A nice large Tray for the price!   This is a 5 ounce 4" tall Juice Glass made by Anchor Hoking to go with the the Pink Swirl Dinnerware line. Excellent/very good condition- no chips or cracks, shiny and little, if any, fading. Priced each at  Though I know nothing about who Laura Smith is or was, I do know that she is a very talented enamelist. Her enamels show great skill and imagination.

This particular oblong example measures 5 3/4 inches in length x 4 inches in diameter and is simply stunning! A background color of a bright orange showcases the warm swirls of burgundy, white, gold in this design, which is made up of small jewels. It reminds me of Op Art. The back is counter-enameled in the same black color as Bovano but the area in which the initials LS are written are done in a vibrant orange. A gold paper label stating Laura Smith Enamel on Copper is present as well. A great example of Mid-Century enamel by a very talented artist.  2011 Tonner Revlon Velvet Dazzle outfit, No. T11RVOF06 fits the 13 inch Revlon fashion doll body. Made by Homer Laughlin for the Quaker Oats company, this line was called Pastoral as the green transfer decoration scene is reminiscent of Currier & Ives decorations. The farm and barn in the background serve as a backdrop to the farmer who is guiding his team of horses and wagon on runners in the winter. The rim of the dish features a band of leaves and a five petal flower in relief.

It is signed with a green stamp PASTORAL by HOMER LAUGHLIN USA. There is also a crossed sheaf of oats most probably because it was made for the Quaker Oats company. It has the numbers C 58 N 6 which normally means it was made in 1958.

It is seen on page 178 of the 2002 Jo Cunningham book titled Homer Laughlin China, Guide to Shapes and Patterns.

From 1937-1939 he was a classmate of Glidden Parker. He had his studio in Burlington Vermont from 1946 -1960 until his untimely tragic death in February 1960.

The surface of the terra cotta vase is covered with a chocolate base glaze over which a spattered layer of glazed was added to add texture over which the colors have been applied, with thick black lines outlining the colored sections. A bland band is at the bottom and the top Above the bottom black band there is a band of black diagonal lines. A very abstract bird with orange eye and tail circles the vase. The body of the bird is done in yellow with black lines separating the yellow sections. The same horizontal aquamarine color band outlined in black can be seen in three different places on the vase.

The vase is in excellent condition. The piece is signed simply in capital leters MADE IN ITALY with a sans serif font as opposed to the Toscany pieces with a serif font for the word Italy.

This funky and retro Mid-century pottery was probably made in Italy by the Toscany Company, of Empoli Italy. Empoli is a town in Tuscany about 20 miles south of Florence. Empoli is also not far from Montelupo, a famous center of Italian pottery made for export to the United States. The silver label seen on identical pieces seems to be restricted to the 1945-1970 time period.

Another possibility is that it is from the studio of Bruno Bagnoli, who worked for Bitossi at Montelupo. Perhaps lesser known here in the United States than Aldo Londi, he nonetheless is well represented in Italy. His work can be seen on pages 160-161 in the book titled Novecento Ceramiche Italiane, Volume 2, by Emanuele Gaudenzi.

Each fish in painted in orange with a black outline and black outlined eye. The fish has aquamarine color stripes as well.

The vase is in excellent condition. The piece is unsigned and most likely had a paper label when sold. It very well could have been part of the Raymor line.

The deeply carved pattern on this 4 1/2 inch tall ewer is perhaps a reflection of Etruscan pottery as well. A rough sponged type of glaze gives the base chocolate underglaze dimension and texture. The top layers are painted in bold bright colors: pumpkin orange, lemon yellow, aquamarine, deep red. This pattern I am naming "Red Triangles".

It is signed on the bottom with the standard black ink stamp mark of MADE IN ITALY in capital letters. One can see the base reddish clay on the unfired bottom.

LIBBEY Glass Company of Toledo Ohio first introduced this exquisite pattern (Golden & Silver Foliage) in their 1957 - 1958 catalog It was very popular than and some 50 years later, it is still very popular. The gold used in the decorations is 22K - the silver is Palladium.

Each of these little gems stands 4 1/2 inches tall. A frosted band shows off 4 stylized abstract Mid-century leaf designs. Each is done in what we would today call a "drop-shadow" effect. Think Photoshop!

There is a silver band at the top of each cordial. Each cordial holds exactly 1 ounce! So, break out the Drambuie or Cointreau and toast your family and friends.

Think Brady Bunch!

The covered creamer stands 2 3/4 inches tall to the top of its finial. The covered sugar bowl is the same height. The finials on both pieces are a futuristic pinch design which was common on dinnerware of the Mid-century era.

It is in great shape with no scratches or cracks. It would make a great breakfast set for a camp as it is lightweight and easily cleaned. Add it to your Eames era funky kitchen today.  This Georges Scatchard early 4 1/4 inch tall x 4 1/4 inch wide at the mouth planter / vase is a good example of the work that Scatchard was doing in the 1970s and early 1980s before he decided to concentrate primarily on lamps. The inside of the rim shows the glaze which he used on the outside of the mug. You can see all the ridges of the hand thrown object. The outside of the goblet is done in tans and beiges and one can see both inclusions and the horizontal rings from the throwing. The mug is signed on the unglazed bottom G. SCATCHARD . A beautiful piece.

Currently located in Underhill, Vermont, Georges Scatchard started from a converted horsebarn with his brother Ted in 1960. An article about the two Scatchard brothers and their ceramics was published in the 1967 Spring issue of Vermont Life on pages 38-42. According to the article, he was the only New Englander to receive a merit award for three items (all pottery) entered in the 1965-1966 New England Craft Council's exhibition for new and emerging craftsmen.

Here is a whimsical modern stoneware piece from the late David Gil at Bennington Potters in Vermont. started by David Gil in 1948. It is from the mid 1950s time period when Gil used a transition mark which included both the words Design Cooperative and Bennington Vermont and a large arm symbol.

I recently learned that when Gil decided to mark his works with shape numbers, he started with the number 1300. However, if an earlier design was to remain in production, they marked it with a number starting with 1290. This explains the numbering and mark on the transition pieces.

They are among the few American studio potteries that turned into production potteries in the midcentury. It evolved into a co-operative of different art potters.

After 1960, they made their bread and butter by making gorgeous modern styled dinnerware that was distributed throughout the US and sold in fine department stores. In their 1964 catalogue, Gil described their creations as "Art Objects in the Practical Realm" - Museum Honored, Hand-crafted, Modestly Priced,"

This fun and funky owl plaque can be seen in the 1964 as shape #1504. I believe this particular owl plaque is much earlier as the dimensions of the piece are larger than what is shown in the 1964 catalogue.

This plaque uses the mid-1950 volcanic dark greenish gray background glaze. The highlight on the owl itself is a dark forest green. The two tone gray glaze forms the body of the owl. The back is stamped with a larger version of the Cooperative Design Bennington Vermont mark.

On the back what looks like damage is really extra glaze which was sanded off. I have never seen this on the post-1960 pieces signed with the shape number 1504. You be the judge but I think this is the earliest version of the owl plaque I have seen. There is a wire hanger for using it as a plaque though it is an earlier system I think.  This is a unmarked fire king ivory demitasse cup only. This divided relish dish designed by Yusuke Aida for Bennington Potters measures 9 1/2 inches across in length x 6 5/8 inches across and is shaped with twin sectoins. The color was referred to as Tawny Brown in the original 1964 brochure. Notice the reddish highlights which come from the firing process.

A nice item for a collection- or to use and enjoy!   Bennington by Gil started in 1948 . They are among the few American studio potteries that turned into production potteries in the midcentury. It evolved into a co-operative of different art potters. They made their bread and butter by making gorgeous modern styled dinnerware that was distributed throughout the US and sold in fine department stores but this is an earlier more studio inspired piece.

David Gil, trained at Alfred University and profiled in the Winter 1961 issue of Vermont Life, started Bennington Potters in 1948 in Bennington, VT right after WWII.

This version of the iconic double trigger mug stands 8 inches tall. This vase is glazed with a high gloss white glaze on the inside. The outside is done in a semi matte white. It dates from the 1948-1959 period before Gil used the term Bennington Potters on his pieces.

According to yet to be authenticated information, the suggestion for the double trigger handle was given to David Gil by one Maurice A. Douglass, a resident of Bennington Vermont and a collector of early Norton Pottery.

In the 1964 catalogue, there are 3 sizes of the double trigger mug shown but not this very tall #1372 size.

This beautifully deisgned and balanced 1372 trigger mug is in excellent condition. Add it to your Mid-century Bennington Potters or David Gil collection today.  This lovely blue and white Delft type vase stands 6 1/4 inches tall. It is done in the traditional style and uses the windmill motif. It is signed only with the word Holland, which makes me think that it was produced prior to 1921. You be the judge. I picked it up very very reasonably and am happy to pass it along to a fellow dealer or a collector.
