Antique Arts

Annemarie Davidson learned her enameling craft first from the great Doris Hall (1907-2001) in Cambridge, MA in 1957. In California she continued her studies with Curtis Tann. Her combination of geometric and organic form in her designs culminated in her most celebrated abstract designs, her Jewel line which features pieces of glass used to create free-form organic shapes which she calls Jewels. She also uses a sgraffito technique, incising straight lines from the center of her plate with the sharp point of a dart. She no longer is producing work.

This 10 1/2 inch long x 6 1/4 inch wide plate, most likely from the 1961-1962 time period, is unusual for its size and shape. It is scarce to find plates larger than her more standard 6-7 inches. This biomorphic oblong shape is unusual as well as most of her larger pieces are on round shapes.

This plate features 3 large yellow and blue jewels and 6 smaller clight blue jewels. The underlying copper color can be seen near the edges as well as behind the center area. A prominent Palm Springs CA dealer James Elliot-Bishop on his website has named this pattern as Grooveline.

The back of the plate has three felt pads and is signed with her charcteristic AD interwined intiails and her paper label which reads Annemarie Davidson handcrafted enamels Sierra Madre California. In addition, there is a label which reads SOLID COPPER, Made in U. S. A. I have never seen this label on a Davidson piece before. Every piece was handcrafted by her alone, from start to finish. Excellent condition.

The work of Annemarie Davidson was included in the seminal exhibit titled Painting with Fire which opened in Jan 2007 at the Long Beach Museum of Art. She was one of 30 enamelists included with a one page entry on her life and work. Her page is page 266 of the catalogue.

Add it to your Mid century enamel collection today.  The Buffalo Pottery Company was established in Buffalo, New York, in 1901. It was an offshoot of the Larkin Soap Company, which was founded in 1875. John Larkin and his brother-in-law Elbert Hubbard conceived Buffalo Pottery to make dishes that could be purchased with certificates from Larkin Soap. In essence, the company was a gimmick to sell more soap. Buffalo Pottery produced many different kinds of pottery for commercial use in hotels and railroad dining cars, as well as art pottery that is popular with antique collectors.

Buffalo Pottery completely shifted to commercial grade china in the 1920s and 1930s. This is an example from that time period.

It is part of the tableware set designed by Gil with mold numbers 1365 (followed by a letter) and it is referred to as the "Old Bennington" collection. David Gil designed the pieces, largely beginning in the early mid fifties, not likely adding to the collection after Yusuke Aida came on board and was commissioned to design the next collection there, (the so-called "Classic Bennington") in 1961. Pieces from this series were produced well into - if not through -  the 70's, based on backstamp styles alone, as can be seen on the bottom of this piece.

This is the 1365I 8 1/4" wide salad plate in a standard glaze color for this line. It is a dark teal color. It is in excellent condition. It is signed on the bottom with the stamped "bennington potters, bennington vermont" mark and the shape number 1365I.

The stump with the five openings for flower stems is done in Noritake's classic tan luster. The back and head of the bird are done in blue luster. The bill is black as are the pupils. The irises are yellow with a purple band through the eye. The feet are black. It is marked with the standard MADE IN JAPAN mark. I guarantee it to be Noritake.

A very similar figurine is shown on page 172 of David Spain's 1999 Collecting Noritake A to Z book and is valued there at $260-290. As I bought this very reasonably my price is much lower.

It is in excellent vintage condition. Add it to your Noritake, Art Deco or bird inspired collection today.

Noritake Deco figural kingfisher flower $125.00

This cute little fellow is a pin dish made by the Noritake Company in the 1935-1931 time period. One can see it pictured in plate D.236 on page 130 of David Spain's 2004 Art Deco Noritake & More book. this particular example has a white dog with red mouth and black nose and facial features. The tray part of the dish is standard Noritake blue luster and the rim is done in matte black paint, a typical Noritake Art Deco treatment.

It is in excellent condition. It is signed with the standard green Wreath mark. Add it to your Noritake collection today. In Spain's book, it is valued at $100-$180 but my price is much lower as I bought it extremely reasonably last summer.  This large Noritake Nippon cake plate measures a little over 10 inches across from top to bottom and almost 11 inches from the tip of the handle to the other handle. It is a standard Noritake shape, but it is unusual to see it NOT signed with the post-1921 Noritake mark but with an earlier purple M in wreath mark. I would place this piece in the 1920-1925 time period before the company consciously adoped Art Deco motifs, colors and styling.

It is very practical and functional piece of china and is ready for your holiday table. The cream color band would complement many contemporary Noritake dinnerware patterns. The four floral cartouches are all hand-painted. The more Victorian motif of prunus flower blossoms are done in 24K gold and form a basket shape around the floral cartouches. There were most likely 6 smaller cake plates which went with this cake plate.

It is in excellent vintage shape. Add it to your Nippon or Noritake collection today.  This Noritake Art Deco compote has a decoration that is pure Art Deco. The abstract stylized flower blossoms in the center are overlapped and bordered in black outline. The background color is not the usual blue luster but a richer deeper true blue color. the rim is bordered in black as is the base which also has a blue band, making this piece an important example of Noritake's Art Deco whimzy.

It stands 2 1/2 inches tall and measures a little over 6 inches across the top. A similar compote is shown on page 97 of David Spain's 2004 Art Deco Noritake and More book and shown therein as plate B. 737.

All Noritake Art Deco was produced between 19255 and 1931.

This 7 3/8 inch wide low bowl was made by Worcester Mass enamelist Donald B. Andrick. Here is some background information I have found on him.

He participated in the Massilon Museum’s 1964 Summer Show July 1 - August 30. 445 pieces entered and 185 accepted. His enamel tray received the Baldwin Purchase prize.

Found in The Morning Record, Meriden CT - Wednesday Oct. 8 1975:

The Annual Arts & Crafts Show sponsored by the Sisterhood of Temple B’Nai Abraham on October 12, 1975. "Donald Andrick of Worcester, MA works with enamel on copper. His works which include jewelry, dishes, sculpture and plaques are in museum collections as well as private collections throughout the world. Andrick is listed in the 1975 Who’s Who in America and has won numerous awards.

This low bowl has a background color of a reddish orange color. One can see specks in it like the early pieces of California enamel artist Annemarie Davidson. Like Davidson, Andrick draws lines from the center of the piece to the edge with some sort of tool. The back is counter-enameled in a lovely dark purple color. The original label stating Donald B. Andrick Enameling is still there as are two of the three felt pads the original owner must have added to protect the surface on which this stunning bowl sat.

It is in excellent condition with no edge chips or flakes. Add it to your American Midcentury enamel collection today.  Prior to changing the name to Bennington Potters around 1960, David Gil's company was known as Cooperative Design. There, he and other Alfred designers fashioned all sorts of interesting Mid-Century items. Having trained at Alfred University, Gil came to Bennington in 1948. His designs are included in many Mid-Century exhibits and catalogues.

This is the #1342 rimmed covered casserole with metal bail handle. It is done in an early teal glaze. It measures 10 1/4 inches across x 7 inches wide. It has a lid which features a metal handle which was formed into the pottery. . It would make a great baking and/or serving dish as. It's a good-sized practical dish. It would look great with your McCobb or Eames buffet.

The casserole bottom is marked 1342. The lid is marked 1342 C, most likely the C refers to it being the cover. There is a tiny pinpoint flake on top rim though it is so small it is just on the inside part of the top rim which slopes down toward the handle. It was there when I bought it and will be there when you buy it. I describe my items accurately.

It is signed with the earlier transition mark which includes the words Bennington Potters and also Cooperative Design. This makes it more circa 1960-1961 than 1964.

After 1960, they made their bread and butter by making gorgeous modern styled dinnerware that was distributed throughout the US and sold in fine department stores. In their 1964 catalogue, Gil described their creations as "Art Objects in the Practical Realm" - Museum Honored, Hand-crafted, Modestly Priced,"

This #1538 saucer/coaster measures 4 5/8 inches across. It is done in the Turquoise glaze.

The mark on the back shows that this piece, though a 1960s design, was produced later, probably in the early 1970s as it uses the lower case letters for all the words. It was meant to go with the #1537 12 oz. 3 inch tall Double Mug. Originally a dozen mug and saucers were priced at $30 a dozen in the 1964 catalogue. In the Mid-century tradition of multiple uses for an item, it is still a very versatile and functional piece for today's home.

She has painted blue eyes, freckles, and an auburn mohair wig styled in braids with pink ribbons. The Kish site describes the wig color as golden brown, though the dolls that came to me have reddish wigs. She is wearing a pinkish beige corduroy, plaid and tulle jumper (in shades of pink) over a simple white cotton blouse with puffed sleeves, white shorty socks with pink frills and burgundy mary jane shoes. Underneath she has white panties. She also wears an over-the-shoulder bag in the shape of her favorite beagle, made of wool felt and love, with a gold chain. Limited edition of 250. New and mint-in-the-box with shipper.
