They are included in the seminal exhibit of 2007 produced by the Long Beach Museum of Art entitled "Painting with Fire: Masters of Enameling in America 1930-1980". One of only 13 artists to merit a full chapter, information about them can be seen on pages 149-165 of the exhibit catalogue.

Based in San Diego, CA, this husband and wife team first saw enameling in 1947. In an interview Ellamarie stated that they were enamoured of enamel for "the medium’s unique properties, particularly its rich color and layered depth, especially appealing."

The plates which they produced between 1947-1953 were signed and numbered sequentially based on the order they were produced. Modern in their design, the plates were decorated with abstract, figurative, or still-life designs. More than 5000 of these plates were produced between 1948-1953.

Their work was shown in the annual Decorative Arts and Ceramics Exhibition at the Wichita Art Association in 1948, 1949, 1950, 1951, 1952, 1954, 1955 (Ellamarie), 1956 (Ellamarie), 1957 and 1961 (Ellamarie), as well as in the biennial exhibitions of 1968 and 1970. Their work was featured in the seminal Kenneth Bate’s book "Enameling: Principles and Practice", as well as in the 1957 publication by Oppi Untracht titled "Enameling on Metal". From 1954 on, their attention turned to larger works.

This #804 plate was created for Gump’s of San Francisco. It measures 4 5/8 inches in diameter. A vibrant chartreuse background serves to makes the abstract birds and fish POP out on this plate. Done in shades of turquoise, teal, green, orange and purple, these animals are asymmetrically placed around the plate. Counterenameled in a rich speckled green, the signatures are on the copper middle of the back.

Marked with the numbers 46/4. B, this vase is a design of master potter Aldo Londi, who worked for the Bitossi as Artistic Director from 1946 on. This vase has the capital letter B mark which dates it to the 1950s era of Bitossi production. It is without a doubt a creation of Aldo Londi himself.

It stands 6 1/2 inches tall with a top opening of 2 1/2 inches. The upper part of the vase is done in what is being called the Brutalist style these days. The natural body of the piece was left unglazed and a texture was added to ressemble cork. A clear glaze was applied on top of this. The bottom third of the vase features vertical bands which were incised into the clay body. Each is glazed in a different color: white, chartreuse, turquoise and a darker blue. There is also a band on incised dots separating the cork area from the colored vertical bands. This is a classic Londi decorative motif. The top and interior of the vase are glazed in a Londi blue glaze. The mark on the bottom is done in an orange color. The vase is in excellent condition.

The inside is glazed in a deep chocolate brown which he also used on French onion soup handled bowls and wine goblets. You can see all the ridges of the hand thrown object. Currently located in Underhill, Vermont, Georges Scatchard started from a converted horsebarn with his brother Ted in 1960. An article about the two Scatchard brothers and their ceramics was published in the 1967 Spring issue of Vermont Life on pages 38-42. According to the article, he was the only New Englander to receive a merit award for three items (all pottery) entered in the 1965-1966 New England Craft Council's exhibition for new and emerging craftsmen.

This funky and retro Mid-century pottery was probably made in Italy by the Toscany Company, of Empoli Italy. Empoli is a town in Tuscany about 20 miles south of Florence. Empoli is also not far from Montelupo, a famous center of Italian pottery made for export to the United States. The silver label seen on identical pieces seems to be restricted to the 1945-1970 time period.

Another possibility is that it is from the studio of Bruno Bagnoli, who worked for Bitossi at Montelupo. Perhaps lesser known here in the United States than Aldo Londi, he nonetheless is well represented in Italy.
