Antique Arts

Here is a whimsical modern stoneware piece from the late David Gil at Bennington Potters in Vermont, started by David Gil in 1948. It is part of the tableware set designed by Gil with mold numbers 1365 (followed by a letter) and it is referred to as the "Old Bennington" collection. David Gil designed the pieces, largely beginning in the early mid fifties, not likely adding to the collection after Yusuke Aida came on board and was commissioned to design the next collection there, (the so-called "Classic Bennington") in 1961. Pieces from this series were produced well into - if not through -  the 70's, based on backstamp styles alone, as can be seen on the bottom of this piece.

This is the 1365I 8 1/4" wide salad plate in a standard glaze color for this line. It is a dark teal color. It is in excellent condition. It is signed on the bottom with the stamped "bennington potters, bennington vermont" mark and the shape number 1365I.

Add it to your Mid-century dinnerware or your Bennington Potters collection today.  This 7.5 inch hard plastic doll is from the late 1940s or early 1950s. She is 7.5 inches tall, and she is similar in size and type to the Storybook Dolls, Princess Ann, Virga, and similar dolls. She still has her original auburn mohair wig that covers her head. She has painted side-glancing blue eyes and very good coloring. Her clothes are glued on, so it is impossible to see if there are any markings without risking damaging her. Her arms move, but her legs and head are stationery. She is wearing her original Scottish outfit consisting of a long sleeve red and green plaid taffeta dress with a pleated skirt, a matching scarf with metal motif, a black felt vest, a white ribbon sash with tie, and painted on white with black boots trimmed with black ribbon with white flower motifs, and white net underpants. This previously owned vintage doll is not perfect, but she is one of the better looking one of these I have seen and would be classified as in very good to excellent condition. Both dolls have red yarn hair, dark painted bluish eyes, and painted reddish noses. She is dressed in a blue jumper over a white with red hearts blouse, white pantaloons, red and white stripped stockings, a red print kerchief, blue stockings, and black shoes. Tommy is dressed in a blue and white sailor hat; a jumpsuit with a red and white checked top, blue bow tie, and blue pants; red and white striped stockings, and black shoes. The dolls come with two red plastic chairs to rest in after a day at play. They are boxed together in an attractive box with a wallpaper playroom looking background and the Classic Raggedy Logo print. These dolls are new, mint, and never-removed-from box. However, the window of the box has a dent on the upper right side and the box has a minor crinkle in the front top printing. Expand listing to view all 3 photographs.

Tonner 2011 Small World Dutch Girl from Holland doll from the Disney Showcase Collection, No. T11DYDD15, is a high quality vinyl 10 inch doll with a Small World head on an Ann Estelle body with bending knees but straight arms. She has a lighter skintone with a blonde wig styled in braids with yellow ribbon and painted brown eyes. The Tonner site shows a picture with blue eyes, but the dolls that came to me all have brown eyes and the Tonner site has been corrected to describe brown eyes, unlike the catalog photographs. She is dressed as on the Disney ride when journeying through the land of tulips. She is wearing a brilliant blue dress with contrasting yoke and sleeves, trimmed with bright green ribbon, a touch of yellow, and delicate eyelet lace, a white cloth hat, white tights, and yellow resin clogs that look like wood.  This vase stands 7 1/4 inches tall and is 2 5/8 inches wide at the mouth. It is done in the brutalist manner of the late 1960s-early 1970s. The surface of the terra cotta vase is covered with a spattered base over which the colors have been applied. thick black lines outline the colored sections. A bland band is at the bottom and the top Above the bottom black band there is a band of black diagonal lines. A very abstract bird with orange eye and tail circles the vase. The vase is in excellent condition. The piece is signed simply in capital leters MADE IN ITALY.

This is most likely from the studio of Bruno Bagnoli, who worked for Bitossi at Montelupo. Perhaps lesser known here in the United States than Aldo Londi, he nonetheless is well represented in Italy. His work can be seen on pages 160-161 in the book titled Novecento Ceramiche Italiane, Volume 2, by Emanuele Gaudenzi.

The Platter is in excellent condition- no chips or cracks and I don't see any utensil scratches on the surface. A nice Corn Flower piece for your Corning Ware Pyrex collection or to use!   These small amber glass mini beer steins look like shot glasses to me, but, I have also read that they were used as creamers in restaurants for coffee. They are very nice- very shiny, amber glass- no damage and are marked with the "F"ederal shield in the bottom. Price is for the set of 6 at

Red triangles form the middle with a blue band above and below. The inside of the piece is glazed in a terra cota glaze. There is one 5/16 flake on the inside rim of the top. The piece is signed simply in capital leters MADE IN ITALY.

This funky and retro Mid-century pottery was probably made in Italy by the Toscany Company, of Empoli Italy. Empoli is a town in Tuscany about 20 miles south of Florence. Empoli is also not far from Montelupo, a famous center of Italian pottery made for export to the United States. The silver label seen on identical pieces seems to be restricted to the 1945-1970 time period.

Another possibility is that it is from the studio of Bruno Bagnoli, who worked for Bitossi at Montelupo. Perhaps lesser known here in the United States than Aldo Londi, he nonetheless is well represented in Italy. His work can be seen on pages 160-161 in the book titled Novecento Ceramiche Italiane, Volume 2, by Emanuele Gaudenzi.

It is in very very good shape. The bowl measures 9 1/2 inches across and stands 2 inches high. It has great Deco styling and is a pratical and stylish piece today. I use a set of yellow individual salad bowls as my everyday dishes, great for salad, soups, pasta.

It is shown on page 236 of book titled Fiesta, Harlequin, Kitchen Kraft Dinnerware produced the the Homer Laughlin China Collectors Associatiion and published by Schiffer in 2000. The valuation at that time was $30-$33. My price is much less because I bought it very very reasonably.

It is in very good vintage condition with only a few light knife marks which can only be seen if you tip the bowl to the light. Good strong glazing.

The characters and drawings are based on the creations of Johnny Gruelle. The book is preowned and gently used. The cover is intact. The pages of the book are intact and in excellent condition. The book is meant for a young child to read, though it is also good to read to a child. In this book Raggedy Dog learned that it was no fun to play with a ball all by himself; it was not fun unless it was shared with the other dolls and toys. When the people are away the dolls, stuffed animals, and young animals come to life and talk and interact with one another in drawings like classical ones. Its ISBN number is ISBN 10: 1558021140.  Designed for Hall China by celebrated Hungarian designer extraordinaire Eva Zeisel, this 40 oz 5 3/4 inch tall jug in the #1881 Bouquet pattern is part of the Hallcraft Classic line. Nortwood Glass Works holder: clear opal Chrysanthemum Base Swirl.

The pattern is also shown on page 161 of the Bredehoft Second Edition book and listed there as having a value of $190. I have priced this toothpick holder considerably under that price as I bought it very reasonably.

It stands 2 1/8 inches tall x 2 inches wides. This holder is in excellent condition, with what we toothpick collectors consider normal rim roughness. It is unreasonable to expect a piece of glass which was made in 1893 and had household use to be exactly as it left the factory. The top rim has never been ground down on this one.

Annemarie Davidson learned her enameling craft first from the great Doris Hall (1907-2001) in Cambridge, MA in 1957. In California she continued her studies with Curtis Tann. Her combination of geometric and organic form in her designs culminated in her most celebrated abstract designs, her Jewel line which features pieces of glass used to create free-form organic shapes which she calls Jewels. She also uses a sgraffito technique, incising straight lines from the center of her plate with the sharp point of a dart.

This 11 1/4 inch plate, most likely from the 1961-1962 time period, is unusual for its size. It is scarce to find plates larger than her more standard 6-7 inches. This plate features 5 large light blue jewels, 12 smaller cobalt blue jewels . The underlying copper color can be seen near the edges. A prominent Palm Springs CA dealer James Elliot-Bishop on his website has named this pattern as Grooveline.

What is interesting about this particular plate is the asymmetric placement of the jewels. Davidson was usually quite symmetric in her placement. There are few pieces where the smaller jewels appear singly as on this large plate.

The back of the plate is signed with her charcteristic AD interwined intiails and her paper label which reads Annemarie Davidson handcrafted enamels Sierra Madre California. Every piece was handcrafted by her alone, from start to finish. Excellent condition.

The work of Annemarie Davidson was included in the seminal exhibit titled Painting with Fire which opened in Jan 2007 at the Long Beach Museum of Art. She was one of 30 enamelists included with a one page entry on her life and work. Her page is page 266 of the catalogue.  This particular tumbler is from the Spanish Knobs line of glass produced by the Consolidated Glass Company of Coraopolis Pennsylvania, makers of the iconic Ruba Rombic glass. In the original 1929 catalog for the Catalonian line, there were three items having the raised knobs on them. Consolidated expanded this variation of the Catalonian line into a complete line of tableware as there are fifteen different shapes of tumblers and goblets alone.

This tumbler has a square base and a round top and holds 12 ounces. It is in excellent shape and a good example of this American Art Deco line.

Add it to your Art Deco or Consolidated glass collection today. Come learn more about this glass at the Phoenix & Consolidated Glass Collectors Club website: www.pcgcc.org  Part of the Regent line made by Consolidated in the early 1940 or late 1930s, this is a 6 inch tall classically shaped vase. In the Regent line, it is shape 1140. Aqua cased in white and having a glossy finish. This vase is shown in a catalog reprint in Jack Wilson's 1989 book on page 151 (top row), where it is shape number 1140. It is scarce, as are all Regent cased pieces. Excellent condition.  Shown on page 79 of Jack Wilson's 1989 book, this is the #1174 4 1/8 inch tall Spanish Knobs fan vase in emerald green. What is interesting is that you can see on the rim where the glassworker ended his working of the rim as this piece was made from a tumbler mold.
