This vase most likely was part of the Raymor line of imported Italian pottery and ceramics.

It stands 10 5/8 inches tall and is 4 1/4 inches wide at the base. The heavy red base clay is glazed in a whitish tan glaze. Using sgrafitto incising, the decorator created a large Egyptian figure carrying two pots. There are also three cartouches on the back where the clay has been carved out and enamel dots have been added.

The condition is very good considering this type of decoration is quite fragile. There is a small flake at the rim that happened long ago. I see no other damage. There are areas of the vase where the sgrafitti left some areas without the white underglaze but this is not damage.

The colors of the figure are yellow, orange, blue, red, green with a pink face, brown body and hair. I have not seen many other Mid century Fratelli Fanciulacci pieces with this decoration. The base also carries the initials VP. It appears that the botte vase may have had a cork as there is still one inside the vase.

Katherine Nelson.

From 1937-1939 he was a classmate of Glidden Parker. He had his studio in Burlington Vermont from 1946 -1960 until his untimely tragic death in February 1960.

Produced by Vermont Mid-Century studio potter Stanley Ballard who worked in the Burlington areaa, this 5 1/8 inch square dish is a very early studio piece as it carries no shape number and was most likely hand formed.

It has a very heavily mottled light green glaze over a chocolate brown underglaze and sloping sides. A great example of Ballard's glaze and early shape. It is in excellent condition.

This Noritake Art Deco 7 3/4 inch wide tab handled plate features a very Art Deco sensibility. The main design is placed at the edge of the plate, creating asymmetricality and giving movement to the piece. That is aided by the tendril like white curving lines which flow across the piece. In fact, these are areas from which the typical blue luster glaze has been removed, thus negative space.

The central blossom measures almost 2 1/2 inches by itself. Black lines radiate out of the center. The blue center is surrounded by give green circles, surrounded by give yellow petals, surrounded by six white and orange petals. There are four other partial blossoms, suing orange, blue, pink, yellow, purple and green tones.

Gold rimmed, it is signed with the blue Cherry Blossom mark, which is a Noritake Company mark. As I picked this piece up reasonably, so have I priced it.

It is thought that this toothpick holder may have been produced until 1970.

This Madoline pattern toothpick holder was first produced by the Co-operative Flint Glass Company of Beaver Falls, PA in 1893. It enjoyed a very long production life as it was perfectly suited to the promotional and souvenir market with its plain sides.

This toothpick holder stands 2 3/8 inches tall x 2 1/8 inches wide. It has a shield of ruby stain which serves as a background for the inscription Ella 1925. These had to be ordered ahead of time so this was probably to commemorate a special event.

The name of the pattern Madoline was for the young daughter of the Company's Secretary, Mr. Charles W. Klein.

It is in excellent vintage condition and ready to join your Co-operative Glass, toothpick holder or ruby-stained Early American Pattern Glass collection today.

Annemarie Davidson learned her enameling craft first from the great Doris Hall (1907-2001) in Cambridge, MA in 1957. In California she continued her studies with Curtis Tann. Her combination of geometric and organic form in her designs culminated in her most celebrated abstract designs, her Jewel line which features pieces of glass used to create free-form organic shapes which she calls Jewels. She also uses a sgraffito technique, incising straight lines from the center of her plate with the sharp point of a dart. Now in her late 80s, she no longer produces work today as of 2010 I have been told.

This 7 inch plate, most likely from the 1961-1962 time period, is a good example of an earlier Ghostline piece. This plate features 3 large turquoise blue jewels and 6 smaller cobalt blue jewels, all symmetrically arranged, yet asymmetrically placed on the plate as the whole design is off center. The lines are under the Jewels. A prominent Palm Springs CA dealer James Elliot-Bishop on his website has named this pattern as Ghostline.

The back of the plate still has the three large brown felt pads, the full gold paper label and is signed with her charcteristic AD interwined intiail. Her paper label reads Annemarie Davidson handcrafted enamels Sierra Madre California. Every piece was handcrafted by her alone, from start to finish. There are two tiny areas of some enamel loss to the rim. They are hard to see. One has to look hard to find them. It is in good vintage but not excellent condition, but it sure still looks great on a wall!

The work of Annemarie Davidson was included in the seminal exhibit titled Painting with Fire which opened in Jan 2007 at the Long Beach Museum of Art. She was one of 30 enamelists included with a one page entry on her life and work. Her page is page 266 of the catalogue.  David Gil Coop Design #1202 7 inch teardrop Musician in very early glossy white glaze, with the COOP Man/hand logo partially visible still at the top AND the rectangular Cooperative Design Bennington Vermont mark as well as .99 in black ink. It does not have the rough unglazed rim of the earliest pieces thus I am fairly confident this is a slightly later piece circa 1960. In 1960 most pieces added the words Bennington Potters to the incised mark. I have other designs in this teardrop series which carry the Raymor label.

I recently purchased the same design in white glaze, making it easier to see that the instrument is a clarnet. It is in excellent shape.

I recently learned that when Gil decided to mark his works with shape numbers, he started with the number 1300. However, if an earlier design was to remain in production, they marked it with a number starting with 1200. This explains the numbering and mark on the transition pieces.

They are among the few American studio potteries that turned into production potteries in the midcentury. It evolved into a co-operative of different art potters.

After 1960, they made their bread and butter by making gorgeous modern styled dinnerware that was distributed throughout the US and sold in fine department stores.  Produced by Vermont Mid-Century studio potter Stanley Ballard (1917-1960), a student of Glidden Parker at Alfred University in the 1940s who worked in the Burlington area, this is one of the scarce figural pieces made by Ballard.

This cute figural elephant bank stands 5 inches tall and is 5 inches wide across the back. The glaze is a very early foamy white glaze over the early chocolate brown underglaze. Strongly modeled, this bank features a circle on the bottom where one would need to break it to get to the saved money. Also, on the bottom one sees the early inscribed S. Ballard signature and the word Vermont. I think this was made in the 1945-1946 time period. It is one of the earliest with the word VERMONT on it. Later pieces had the word Vermont as part of the molded signature but this VERMONT is hand inscribed.

I know of only 5 of these, one of which was done in a yellow glaze and is owned by Ballard's niece.

A great example of modeling and glazing, this is a prime example of Stanley Ballard's work.  Tom Tierney's 1999 Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis Paper Dolls by Dover Publishing is a tribute to a remarkable woman. Tom Tierney's Diana, Princess of Wales, Paper Doll: The Charity Auction Dresses by Dover Publishing, was first published in 1997 and is in color. It contains a paper doll and 31 costumes to cut out with notes about the charity auction and outfits. Shortly before her untimely death, Princess Diana donated proceeds from the sales of many of her stunning evening dresses to charity. This spectacular paper doll collection features 31 of the silk, velvet, and satin auctioned garments. A treasure for paper doll collectors and fans of the legendary Princess. New, mint.  Charlotte Whatley's Alice in Wonderland Paper Dolls: Through an All New Looking Glass uses costumes similar to the Disney Tim Burton release in 2010. There's 32 pages containing the 16 characters and costume changes including the older Alice, the Mad Hatter, Red and White Queens, rabbit, and various other characters from Lewis Carrol's books with a modern twist. Prepare to fall down the rabbit hole and plunge through the looking glass again — Alice is getting edgy with this modern paper-doll interpretation. Replete with stunningly original costumes and accessories, these 16 dolls crackle with steampunk style, a creative combination of science fiction, fantasy, and Victorian-and Edwardian-era fashions. This is a vibrant re-imagining of the classic story. Paper dolls and costumes are to be cut out, and may be too detailed for a young child. In color. New, mint.

Done by Lincoln Vermont potter Marcy Mayforth, this is a 1988 dated 10 1/2 inch wide x 4 3/4 inch deep mixing bowl. The design is done in the sgraffito technique, then filled in as in an enamel piece. There are five light and dark blue hanging hearts with the leaves forming a band around the top of the outside neck on the piece, which is signed Mayforth 88 on the bottom. It is in excellent shape. It is a big and practical piece of Vermont Art Pottery by a well-known and well-respected Vermont potter.

Add it to your Vermont Art Pottery or American Studio Pottery collection today.  Here is a whimsical modern stoneware piece from the late David Gil at Bennington Potters in Vermont. started by David Gil in 1948. It is from the the post-1960 time period when Gil began to use the words Bennington Potters on pieces after having used a transition mark which included both the words Design Cooperative and Bennington Vermont.

This fluted 9 5/8 inch diameter plate was advertised in the 1964 catalogue as B 1654, an ashtray which could also be hung on the wall as a plaque as it had a built-in wire on the back. This piece is shown in the 1964 catalogue as and is titled there "La Belle Chat". Its original 1964 price was $5.00.

It features one of the harder to find members of his Animal Line, a tiger. Done in an abstract stylized manner, this big cat in molded in relief and is glazed in green, but not too precisely.

The back of the plate/plaque has a wire hanger which was embedded in the pottery. It is signed 1654 and has the spark mark on the forearm. I would guess it is from the 1960-1962 period. It is in excellent condition.

Produced as part of the Dancing Nymphs line by the Consolidated Glass Company, the #3094 sherbet was introduced when the line of 8 inch ceramic was plates was expanded into a full luncheon set. There is a 1939 catlog showing the line on page 144 of the Wilson book.

The sherbet stands 3 3/4 inches tall and has 12 female nudes on it. This example is the white ceramic wash treatment in which the ceramic wash was removed from the figures to leave them clear.

The sherbet is shown on page 85 of Jack Wilson's 1989 book as plates 434. At that time, he valued a goblet at $35.

They are harder to find than the 8 inch plates and fan vases in this pattern.

More info on the glass produced by Consolidated can be found at www.pcgcc.org. The body of the paperweight is opal or milk glass which has been satinized. The overlay decoration consists of silver tendrils of flowers whose blossoms are also silver with deep blue centers. The leaves are done in a deep green glass. The asymmetrical placement of the flower seems to be common in early Lundberg Studio pieces.

The piece is numbered 280. It carries as well the initials DS, which is either David or Daniel Salazar. It is a spectacular example of early California Art Glass. Add it to your Mid Century glass or paperweight collection today.

Prior to changing the name to Bennington Potters around 1960, David Gil's company was known as Cooperative Design. There, he and other Alfred designers fashioned all sorts of interesting Mid-Century items. Having trained at Alfred University, Gil came to Bennington in 1948. His designs are included in many Mid-Century exhibits and catalogues.

This is the #1342 rimmed casserole bottom. It is done in an early very dark steel gray glaze. It measures 10 1/4 inches across x 7 inches wide. It originally had a lid which features a metal handle which was formed into the pottery. This is just the bottom. It would make a great serving dish as is. It's a good-sized practical dish.

Add it to your Bennington Potters or collection of Mid-Century pottery today.  Nice large clear glass Cookie Jar or Canister with the Pillsbury Doughboy TM and the word GOODIES on it. Well, this is a very interesting one. If you are familiar with Fire King or Gay Fad or Washington glass, this is a very cool Canister. It is 6 1/2" tall and 6" wide at the largest point. The lid has a rubber gasket and wire latch so it seals air tight. It looks like it was painted by Gay Fad Studios as it matches to the Fire King Fruit items with same painted Red Apples and Purple Grapes. Excellent condition both glass and painted design. If you collect or use this pattern, this is an unusual and useful Canister to have!  This is the lovely Harker Pastel Tulip Cake Plate.
