New, Mint, with tag and a gift box.  David Gil Coop Design 6 1/8 inch round x 3/4 inch deep plate with rough unglazed bottom and yellow tinted outside rim, signed with incised signature 'David Gil' and 'bennington'. The deeply incised mark and the dark base color of the clay seen on the back of the plate as well as the orange tinted rim place this plate into the early period for this 1240 shape series. Both the bottom and the bottom of the side rim are unglazed.

The pattern of this plate is a very abstract one, depicting a Bull or Steer with horns. I have nicknamed this piece Lascaux Bull as it reminds me of the cave paintings there. In my 2013 interview with Gloria Gil, she stated that David Gil was inspired by the discovery of the Lascaux caves in France in 1940 and opened to the public in 1948, the same year David graduated from Alfred University and started Cooperative Designin Bennington Vermont.

The body is done in a simple line technique of blue and black. The eye is turquoise blue and there are two brown spots on the side of the animal. What is interesting about the brown spots is that you can also see hints of the turquoise blue color coming through them. The glaze over this must be a type of semi-matte glaze as the colors are muted.

This is a hard to find variation of this early period 1240 shape.

In addition to the standard early period david gil bennington signature, it also shows the outline of the original Raymor paper label which was placed right over the bennington signature. Excellent condition. It was part of the Raymor line. Many of these early period 1240 plates are still found with an intact Raymor label or the shadow of the sticker. Gloria Gil told me that Raymor approached them in 1953. Their association with Raymor last 20 years until 1973.

David Gil started producing work in Bennington Vermont in 1948. They are among the few American studio potteries that turned into production potteries in the midcentury. It evolved into a co-operative of different art potters, then into the Bennington Potters company we have known since 1960 and still very much active today.

After 1960, they made their bread and butter by making gorgeous modern styled dinnerware that was distributed throughout the US and sold in fine department stores.

In their 1964 catalogue, Gil described their creations as Art Objects in the Practical Realm" - Museum Honored, Hand-crafted, Modestly Priced.

This style of cup was introduced in 1972 and stayed in production for 10 years. It was designed by Charles Ketcham in 1967 and put into production in 1972. They are made of Vitrelle, are break resistant and microwave safe. In the company literature this style of cup was called either the "Stack Cup" or "Open Handle Cup" (info courtesy of corellecorner.com)

They hold 6-7 ounces, scant by today's standards of a cup or coffee but normal in the 1970s for a serving size of coffee.

This pattern is called Butterfly Gold and can be seen on page 162 of Mauzy's 3rd Edition (2004) Pyrex the Unauthorized Collector's Guide book. The cups and saucers are in good vintage shape and ready to give you years of service. So, if you already own the Butterfly Gold mixing bowl or refrigeraor set, this set of cups will fit right in.

The highest point of the pitcher near the spout is actually a bit taller at 6 1/24 inches. This line in transparent colors started in the 1950s.

By 1958, it had been renamed the Decor line, which was the brainchild of J. Richard Haden who along with his brother Samuel K. took over the business from their father Joseph Haden. In 1958, the first Decor by Morgantown" catalog was published.

However, when the Carbone Company of Boston, one of the major national Importers assumed the line as their own in the early Sixties, the line became known as Crinkle. This line can be seen and is well presented on pages 214-215 of Jerry Gallagher's Handbook of Old Morgantown Glass (1995).

This Tijuana pitcher is in the Peacock Blue color, one of the harder colors to find in this line. It is in excellent condition and ready to join your Mid-century home as you serve lemonade or iced tea on the veranda or patio (such great mid century terms).

Prior to changing the name to Bennington Potters around 1960, David Gil's company was known as Cooperative Design. There, he and other Alfred designers fashioned all sorts of interesting Mid-Century items. Having trained at Alfred University, Gil came to Bennington in 1948. His designs are included in many Mid-Century exhibits and catalogues.

This is the #1342 rimmed covered casserole with metal bail handle. It is done in an early brown glaze. It measures 10 1/4 inches across x 7 inches wide. It has a lid which features a metal handle which was formed into the pottery. . It would make a great baking and/or serving dish as. It's a good-sized practical dish. It would look great with your McCobb or Eames buffet.

The casserole bottom is marked 1342. The lid is marked 1342 C, most likely the C refers to it being the cover. It is in very good vintage condition. It was used to bake and cook in but there is no damage. There is a heat check on the bottom but that was there when it was made. It was there when I bought it and will be there when you buy it. I describe my items accurately.

It is signed with the circular 1964-1968 mark which includes the words Bennington Potters.

The Tex Glass Company was located in Decatur, Texas. The company was founded by Herman Rosenzwig after his family escaped Nazi Occupied Europe.

Not much is known about this company's production. They produced items in these colors: Ice, Seaweed, Pink Quartz, Hyacinth. I could not find any documentation for this color treatment. It appears to be scarce.

It was made around the same time as Crinkle, Driftwood, and Lido. Fortunately, it is very distinctive as the design incorporates large "thumbprints" in the design.

This set of 6 water tumblers is in the ruby-flashed color. this is not a listed finish so I do not know how unusual they are. They are in excellent condition and ready to join your Mid-century home as you serve lemonade or iced tea on the veranda or patio (such great mid century terms).

Sturdy, dependable, dishwasher-friendly, it is ready for your kitchen table today.  Vermont Studio potter Stanley Ballard (1917-1960) graduated from Alfred University’s highly respected Ceramic Program in 1939, having studied there while these influential teachers were part of the faculty: Marion Fosdick, Charles Harder, Clarence Merritt, and C. Katherine Nelson.

This signed and numbered #19 vase stands 5 5/8 inches tall. The glaze is a rich chocolate brown. Out of the 600+ pieces in my collection, I only own 5-6 pieces in this glaze. In my opinion, this is a vase that was not glazed with an overglaze. There is no "chocolate brown band" at the bottom of the sides. The glaze is extremely mottled, particularly in the inside.

Based on this mark I think it is closer to the 1948 date when Ballard started to use incised shape numbers as part of the bottom mark.

This vase is in excellent vintage condition.

This great example of Aldo Londi designed Bitossi Mid Century Italian pottery is signed on the white base ITALY and 3866. It is in his iconic Seta (Silk) pattern with vertically combed lines accented with horizontal bands of gold. This is the most common color combination I have seen in the Seta pattern: purple, blue, orange, black in repetition around the vase.

It's a great Eames era 1950s - 1960s look. The inside is glazed in a beautiful deep purple glaze.

It stands 13 1/4 inches tall and is in excellent vintage condition.

Add it to your Bitossi or midcentury Italian pottery or just Mid-century collection today.  Produced by the Bryce Glass Company, this is a set of four 4 5/8 inch tall 12 oz. flat tumblers in the Amethyst color.

Not much is known about Bryce's El Rancho production. It was made around the same time as Crinkle, Driftwood, and Lido, and is often confused with them.

This set of 4 12 oz flat juice glasses is in the Amethyst color, one of the harder colors to find in this line. They are in excellent condition and ready to join your Mid-century home as you serve lemonade or iced tea on the veranda or patio (such great mid century terms).

It is a fairly common shape with a great Deco Noritake design which maximizes stands out nicely on a blue lustre background. The design of a red Spanish Galleon with billowing tan luster sails sailing on a black sea with green highlights. The base is done in a purple color with black tendrils. The top inside is tan luster. The design and the rim are outlined in bold black, a standard Noritake Deco technique.

It is signed with the "Made in Japan" mark in green putting it in the transtition period between older Nippon and the 1925-1931 red wreath mark period. It is in very good vintage condition. Here is a whimsical modern stoneware piece from the late David Gil at Bennington Potters in Vermont. started by David Gil in 1948.

They are among the few American studio potteries that turned into production potteries in the midcentury. It evolved into a co-operative of different art potters. They made their bread and butter by making gorgeous modern styled dinnerware that was distributed throughout the US by Raymore and sold in fine department stores.

This is #1460 / #1460T and was called Crown Safety Ashtray in the 1964 catalogue. It is a two part design consisting of an underbowl that can be used separately and a top cover with the safety edge. The bowl measures 5 1/4 inches wide and stands 2 1/2 inches tall to the top of the rim. The top crown sits on top of the bowl when it is used as an ashtray.

This was produced in four colors: White, Turquoise, Charcoal or Brown. This is the iconic Turquoise color. It is marked with the Cooperative Design Bennington Vermont rectangle mark which is a transitional mark used from 1960 to perhaps 1964.

David Gil, trained at Alfred University and profiled in the Winter 1961 issue of Vermont Life, started Bennington Potters in 1948 in Bennington, VT right after WWII.

Condition is excellent -- no chips, cracks, nicks, flakes, stains or other damage / problems.  This great example of American Art Deco glass was made between 1922 and 1931. However, the red glass in this pattern was only made for two years: 1930 and 1931, making it very scarce. Three available, priced each.

It is beautiful red glass. Red glass is and always was very difficult and expensive to make.

This 3 ounce stemmed wine glass stands 5 inches tall. The red color is rich and deep. It is in excellent condition.

In the Mauzy book, this red stem lists for $60. In the Florence book, it lists for $40. I found this stem very reasonably so I can pass it along to a dealer OR collector very reasonably.

The design of vines and flowers was without a doubt inspired by Lalique's Sauterelle (Grasshopper) vase. The design minus the grasshoppers is on two vases in the original 1926 Martelé line: a 7" vase and a 10" vase. Consolidated expanded the design into its own line and introduced it to the glass trade in January 1929. If was offered in "jade, powder blue, honey, and crystal in a full line of flatware, bowls, and vases of various sizes." (Wilson page 60). According to Wilson, certain finishes on the 7" and 10" vases are hard to find including satin black, bright ruby red, matte red, and finishes on a custard glass base. Only the vases were made in these colors.

Here you have the #712 10 ounce goblet which has been turned into a "fan" vase by stretching the top rim while it was hot. The fan vase is shown in the original catalogue (page 126 Wilson) as #702, standing 6 1/2 inches tall.

" The Blue Cornflower was the first Corning Ware emblem. It was introduced with the original line of skillets and saucepans in 1957. In 1988 Corning retired the Blue Cornflower. The blue cornflower which is found on 90 plus pieces of Corning's Pyroceram ware debuted in 1957 and was retired in 1987. The P series dates from 1957-1971 when it was replaced by the A series which ended in 1987.
