Antique Arts

Produced by the Macbeth-Evans Company from 1930-1940, the Petalware pattern was made in pink, monax, cremax, decorated, Ivrene, and crystal. This is the Ivrene glass in the Petalware pattern. The edges of the pattern show the same fiery opalescence as some of the American Sweetheart pieces also made by Macbeth-Evans.

This variation of the Petalware Ivrene is decorated with a 22K gold rim.

The footed creamer stands 3 1/4 inches tall. The footed handled sugar bowl stands 3 1/2 inches tall.

This set was part of a purchase of 49 piece of this pattern which was in the original box. It is either very very little used or never used. The pattern can be seen on pages 175-176 of the Mauzy's 1999 Depression Glass book.

I am pricing these at exactly half of what the 1999 edition of Mauzy's Depression Glass book suggested as current values. I bought the set very reasonably so I can afford to pass these along hopefully to a collector who will use and treasure them.

Add it to your collection of vintage American dinnerware today. It would stunning on a dark wood buffet in the Mid-century style of a blond wood credenza.   The Spice O' Life pattern ran from 1971-1987. Corning had a longtime connection to France so it is not surprising that they featured a line highlighting the interest in French cooking and culture. In fact, Amory Houghton Sr, one of the prominent Houghton family executives of Corning had served as an ambassador to France through the 1950s.

These shakers were not produced by Corning but for Corning by the Gemco firm. The bottoms are milk glass and the tops are plastic painted a silver color to look like chrome. They carry the Spice O' Life design as they were an official go-along to the line.

Add them to your Corning, Corelle, Pyrex or Gemco collection today.  Made by the Federal Glass Company most likely in the 1960s or 1970s, this milk glass mug was fired with a black outer color to highlight the gold lettering on the mug.

It stands 3 3/4 inches tall x 2 3/4 inches wide at the top. On one side is the scorpion with the Zodiac symbol. On the other side is a panel with the dates October 23 - November 21. There is also a list of items associated with this sign.

The bottom has the capital F in a shield mark with the words HEAT PROOF above it and the words USA below with the shape number 48.

Add it to your vintage Zodiac or Federal mug collection today.  These stackable mugs are perfect for a small kitchen, apartment or camp where space is limited. Each stacks into another as the base is narrower than the top. Each mug stands 4 3/8 inches tall x 3 3/4 inches wide at the top. These mugs are what is called New Old Stock as they were never used. I bought a case of 24 of them recently. The box listed the color as Avocado Green. Talk about late 1960s, early 1970s!

They are in excellent condition. Each mug is signed Anchor Hocking Fire-King Oven-Prood Made in U.S. A. with a shape number also.

Perfect for that retro vintage kitchen, camp or apartment. Price is for the set. 4 sets of 4 mugs available.

Each of these four handled soup bowls or lugs stands 2 1/2 inches tall x 5 1/2 inches wide to the end of the handles across the top. The Goss Pottery and the Onion River Pottery of Winooski were somehow related. Research continues.

Goss/Onion River had their own patterns such as this Pineapple pattern but made a huge amount of promotional or advertising items which can easily be found here in Vermont as that is where they were made.

Price is for the set. Add them to your Midcentury or Vermont pottery collection today.  Born in Florence on October 1, 1915, Marcello Fantoni registered at the Institute of Art at Porta Romana in 1927 to attend the course, "The Art of Ceramics", which at that time was taught by the ceramist Carlo Guerrini, artistic director of the Cantagalli factory. Other teachers also contributed to his artistic formation including Libero Andreotti and Bruno Innocenti in sculpture and Gianni Vagnetti in the figure. He graduated in '34 as a 'maestro' of art, and began working as a ceramist. In 1936, after having worked for a few months as the artistic director of a factory in Perugia, he established himself in the stables of Villa Fabbricotti in Florence and established the Fantoni Ceramic studio. Its production of serial and unique pieces had remarkable success at the Florentine Arts and Crafts Exhibit in '37, revealing itself in line with the most recent tendencies, so much so that at the beginning of hostilities his production had already received notable artistic and commercial attention in Italy and abroad.

After the war years, when Fantoni was involved in the resistance, in '46 he began the creative and productive fervor that will allow him to enlarge his company, reaching at the beginning of the next decade the impressive size of over fifty collaborators. Among his employees there were many students who, in ceramics and other fields, would become excellent artisans and even famous artists. In the following decades, especially between 1950 and 1970, the success of his work continued to increase, his unique pieces of sculpture and vascular formations, characterized

by a design in step with the contemporary artistic currents, like archaic stylization inspired by Etruscan models, rendered modern because of their modern handling of materials, glazes and colors.

For this original spirit of modernity, his works entered in private collections and in the most important museums of the world: in the United States his works can be seen at the Metropolitan Museum of Art of New York, the Brooklyn Museum, the Museum of Fine Art of Boston, the Currier Gallery, the Syracuse Museum. In Britain they are in the Victoria and Albert Museum of London, the City Art Gallery

of Manchester, at Royal Scottish Museum of Edinburg. In Japan they are present at the Museum of Modern Art of Tokyo and Kyoto. In Italy they are represented at the International Museum of Ceramics in Faenza, the National Bargello Museum and at the Gabinetto Disegni e Stampe of the Uffizi. In his long and versatile career, Fantoni has completed works for churches, public and private buildings, schools, cinemas, theaters and ships cementing himself in both figurative and abstract ceramics and various metals, and qualifying himself also in the field of medalism. In 1970 he founded the International School of Ceramic Arts at his laboratory in via Bolognese in Florence where he continues to work and teach.

This Fantoni 1970s piece is painted with a blended glaze approach whereby colors run and blend into each other, sometimes referred to as graduated glazes. This vase is typical of Fantoni’s primitive style, with its archaic glaze and form. It is also tied closely with the studio pottery movement, which Fantoni was part of and to which he paid attention. It represents the more commercial side of his work (Mark Hill, Alla Moda, page 144)

This vase stands 12 1/2 inches high x 5 inches wide at its widest point. The glazes starts at the top in a mustard yellow, then shades or orange, chocolate brown, more orange with a mustard yellow base. The mustard yellow overglaze was poured over the piece created a volcanic or blended glaze which dripped down over the other colors. On the black glazed base, it is signed Fantoni Italy for Raymor in white letters. It is in excellent condition. Add it to your Midcentuy Italian pottery, Raymor, or Fantonin collection today.  Alvino Bagni (1919-2000) founded Bagni Ceramiche in Lastra a Signa in August 1946. During the 1950s and 1960s he worked closely with Irving Richards of Raymor, the American distributor, as well as with their competitor, Rosenthal-Netter. The United States became Bagni’s largest market with over 80 percent of the company’s production going there. Thousands of modern designs were produced over four decades. Though it is not possible to categorize Bagni’s work easily, the wax-resist technique, impressed geometric shapes, mottled brown or green glazes and high-relief geometric forms applied to the surface are hallmarks of his work. Many designs were also glossily glazed in bright colors in simple stylized patterns such as banding or swirling lines. (Mark Hill, Alla Moda).

Red clay was used from the late 1940s-1950s, before a finer white clay was used. Bagni considered his "Sea Garden" design to be his version of Londi’s Rimini Blu design. The factory closed in 1992.

As far as signatures, production destined for Raymor or Rosenthal-Netter was often marked in different ways. The first and most common Bagni for Raymor mark is a painted mark comprised of an ‘R’ for Raymor, followed by a three or four digit number. This number is probably Raymor’s internal stock number. The second way is a Raymor paper label printed with ‘BAG’ and a similar number. Some Bagni pieces for Rosethal-Netter were marked with two digits, followed by a slash, followed by two digits. This was often accompanied by a paper label (Mark Hill, Alla Moda, page 216)

This Bagni vase is signed R 2720 Raymor Italy. The underglaze is done is a crackled glaze, an imitation of a famous Chinese glaze, and the predominant color of the glaze is a rich blue, reminiscent of Rimini Blu. A rich green color is also used to form the bird’s body and the dors which appear to be flowers as they are next to branches done in dark blue. It is in good vintage shape but there are rwo small nicks to the underside of the top rim (see photo).

The vase stands 8 1/2 inches tall x 6 inches at its widest point. Add it to your collecton of Midcentury Italian pottery, Raymor or Bagni today.

Made by the Anchor Hocking Company in the 1960s, the Lido line is yet another of the popular crinkle glassware so prevalent at the time. Like the Morgantown Crinkle line , it features highly textured surface. What distiniguishes the Lido line is that the pattern does not go all the way up to the rim of the glass. It came in colors of Aquamarine, Avocado, Crystal, Honey Gold, Laser Blue, and Spicy Brown.

Anchor Hocking produced the "Milano" pattern from 1959 to 1963. The pattern name was then changed to "Lido" because subsequently the molds were remade by the Zanesville Mold Company in Ohio, a newly acquired Anchor Hocking Corporation subsidiary. The difference between the molds resulted in the `Milano' pattern name changing to "Lido." Although the two patterns are similar, the "Milano" pattern has a distinctive and more defined "crinkle" than "Lido". "Milano" was produced in Forest Green and Crystal only.

Each one of this trio of tumblers stands 5 1/4 inches tall x 2 7/8 inch top diameter and holds 12 ounces. All three are in Crystal. Made for cold drinks of ice tea, kool-aid, or lemonade, they are easy to grip and look great. A practical retro vintage design ready for your kitchen today. Price is for the set.

The Great Muppet Caper was the inspiration for four glasses, two of which you have here. One one glass, you see the Happiness Hotel, on the other specific characters as well as the McDonalds yellow logo and the Henson Associates Inc 1981 name.

Both are in great shape with bright colors. The glasses were made by the Libbey Glass Company as their logo is on the bottom of both.

Bring some memories back and add them to your McDonald's or Muppets collection today.  Here is a whimsical modern stoneware piece from the late David Gil at Bennington Potters in Vermont. started by David Gil in 1948. It is from the 1960-1962 period when Gil included both the words Design Cooperative and Bennington Vermont.

This square 8 inch diameter trivet / plaque was advertised in the 1964 catalogue as 1534, a trivet which could also be hung on the wall as a plaque as it had a built-in wire on the back. This piece is shown in the 1964 catalogue as and is titled there Chanticleer. Its original 1964 price was $3.00. This was designed by Gloria Gil.

It features a happy Rooster crowing. The cobalt and white glazed used for color on this piece pop because the background was unfired.

The back of the trivet/plaque has a wire hanger which was embedded in the pottery. It retains only one of the four original rubber feet which protect the flat surface upon which one sets it. They are however easily still found if you want to use it as a trivet. It is signed 1532 and has the spark mark on the forearm inside a rectangle made up of COOPERATIVE DESIGN and BENNINGTON POTTERS VERMONT. This is a transition mark used only in the 19690-1962 time period. It is in excellent vintage condition.

Bennington Potters is among the few American studio potteries that turned into production potteries in the midcentury. It evolved into a co-operative of different art potters.

After 1960, they made their bread and butter by making gorgeous modern styled dinnerware that was distributed throughout the US and sold in fine department stores.  Herei is a set of classic Art Deco inspired martini glasses in the classic martini cocktail shape! Each glass stands 4 1/8 inches tall x 3 1/8 inches across the top.

Both the foot and the top band are frosted glass both decorated with a thin silver rim. There are three silver bands on the top. This could well be Dorothy Thorpe stemware but I am not sure. It certainly would go well with those Mad Men inspired stemware items.

The set is in excellent condition and will be ready for your next cocktail / house party. Go green! Save resources and purchase a piece of the past. It is ready for your home today.

The Culver Glass company began in Brooklyn, New York in 1939, founded by Irving Rothenberg. Culver Glass features real 22-karat gold decoration, used effusively and magnificently especially from the late 1950s on through the 1960s.

In this set of 7 Culver Chantilly pattern glasses, each glass stands 5 1/2 inches tall and is 2 5/8 inches across the top.

This pattern is known as Chantilly and features three horizontal rows of gold floral and leaf designs with shadowing. In between the larger elements there are small flower of leaf designs in an abstract stylized manner. There is a band of gold embossed flowers at the top of the pattern. All glasses are in excellent condition as far as the glass itself is concerned. Five of the seven also still show the gold Culver signature on the side. Two of them have lost their signature, probably to the dishwasher. All in all, I came by this set reasonably and am selling it the same way. Go green! Make some ice cubes in those vintage metal trays!  Mattel Kelly and Tommy 4.5 inch girl and boy dolls as Alice in Wonderland and the Mad Hatter from 2002 as represented in the Disney movie. Alice has long blonde rooted hair with a black ribbon, painted blue eyes, and a closed mouth. She is wearing a blue dress with white pinafore, blue and white striped socks, and black Mary Jane shoes. Tommy as the Mad Hatter has platinum blonde hair under a giant aqua hat with 10/6 on it, aqua and gold striped pants, an aqua vest, aqua with white polka dots bowtie, gold coat, and aqua shoes. The dolls come in a box with a Wonderland backdrop with the Cheshire Cat, a fold-out table with a plastic teapot and tea cup. There is a synopsis of the setting on back of the box. These dolls are new, mint, and never-removed-from box. However, there are minor dents on the bottom of the box on the side.  These two Pillar Optic Rib with squared base Ritz blue bowls are made by Hazel Atlas and can be seen on page 111 of the Florence book, titled Hazel-Atlas glass.

There were three bowls in the set: 6 inch, 8 inch, and 10 inch. What you have here is the 6 1/2 inch bowl and the 8 1/2 inch bowl in excellent vintage condition. It looks like these bowls were little used, if any.

The price in the Florence book for the 10 inch bowl alone is $85. I bought these very reasonably so I will pass them along very reasonably as well. Price is for the pair.  Shown on page 100 of the new revised Mauzy 2004 Pyrex book, this is the #402 bowl in the beloved and popular 400 bowl set. What sets this bowl apart is that is from the very rare 1954 Opal set.

In 1954, Pyrex produced the 400 Bowl set in this opal (milk) glass. This very brief period of production means this version of the bowl set is "extremely rare" according to Mauzy.

One of the advantages of this opal bowl is that is hides wear well. This bowl has very light wear to its inside. Unlike other bowls in the 400 series you can run this one through the dishwasher all you want with no fear of damaging the color as there is NONE.

This Rival Ice-O-Mat ice crusher was state of the art for its time. This particular one also has the wall mount mechanism so you can add it to your mancave or rec room for good!

It stands 9 inches tall. The base is 4 1/2 inches wide. It comes apart by pinching the two chrome toggles one each side. The bottom is the container for the crushed ice. It is easy to transport it. To use, you lift the hinged top and fill with ice cubes. Turn the crank and crushed ice fills the bottom container. What could be easier?

I love the great graphics on the dial. It looks like the grill of a classic car! It is in great working condition. There are a few scratches on it. It was used. However it still has a great look and is ready to use.

It carries a souvenir inscription of St. Johns N. B. (New Brunswick Canada).

The top part of the holder is thin enough to show a lot of fiery opalescence. The original Heisey name for this custard glass was Ivorina Verde. According to the Brederhofts, the enamel decoration and gold was added to Ring Band by Oriental Glass Co, of Pittsburgh, PA.

Born in the Russian Ukraine, Jascha Brojdo, known as Georges Briard, created some of the most stylish and recognizable designs of the Mid-century period here in the United States. He studied at the Art Institute of Chicago eventually earning a Master of Fine Arts degree. He studied painting and design there. in 1947 he went to New York to work for Max Wille

This line is called Paradise. This design is pure Briard, with its modernistic abstract stylized flying birds done in shades of turquoise, white and gold. Between the flying birds there are whimsical designs of leaves with that classic half open leaf pattern so characateristic of the mid-century wares.

This same shape without the attached fork and chain can be seen on page 45 of the Pina Designed & Signed book. The Paradise pattern can be seen on page 61 of the Pina book.2.85

It is signed with the standard Briard gold lettering. What I love is that the glass dividers on the plate have an indentation where the shaft of the fork rests. There is some gold loss on the tops of the glass dividers and on some of the design. However, it is in good vintage shape and ready for your next retro cocktail party.

Made probably for the line titled Mr. Norman, this was imported from Italy and retailed in the United States. It has much in common with pieces from the Gambone firm.

The body of the piece is a white clay, covered with a speckled brown on white base glaze. Over that has been poured a drip deep green volcanic glaze which runs down the exterior sides of the bowl. The inside is pure glossy white.

It measures 8 inches long x 3 1/2 inches wide at its widest point and stands 4 inches tall. I can see it on a nice McCobb credenza or on a great Midcentury coffee table. Fill it with flowers or candy. It is a practical and great piece of Italian midcentury pottery.

Terry Crider started his glasswork in 1976. He is self taught. This studio glass artist has put out a limited amount of work over the past 36 years. He uses NO MOLDS and his only help has been his wife Donna. I had email from Terry and Donna stating that he doesn't think it would be fair to the collectors to make any of the same things again. They have decided, if they do make glass again, they are not going to make anything that they have made in the past. He stopped blowing glass around 1990 and didn't start blowing again until 1999. This toothpick is in mint condition and is signed with Crider on the bottom with no date. Judging by the base glass color and the pulled feather treatment, I will put it between 1977-1981.

This Crider toothpick holder is hand blown glass - it features his early Pulled Feather decoration on an amethyst base glass. What makes it special and hard to find is the applied glass threaded applied to it, applied by his wife Donna who did all the finish work on the pieces. It's hard to imagine the amount of work that went into this beautiful, hand made toothpick holder.

This little toothpick holder stands about 1 5/8 inches high at its highest point and 2 inches wide at top. It is a fantastic piece of art glass! It is in perfect condition.  2012 Robert Tonner Dynamic Red outfit for 16 inch Cami, Jon, Antoinette, and Precarious bodied dolls, No. T12CJOF05. The enamel is excellent- it is clean inside- little to no rust- there is some wear on the handle from use- see 3rd and 4th photo. Very nice vintage kitchen item!   This is a 3 1/2" tall Juice Glass in the Currier and Ives pattern. It is in excellent condition- no damage.  This is a 9" X 12" Oval Platter in the Maywood pattern made by Purinton Pottery (it is not marked). This is a hard to find pattern and the Platter is a harder to find item with in this pattern. The condition is excellent- there are no chips or cracks and it shows little use. There is a manufacturer flaw on the back side- see 2nd photo- it's in the glaze- only mentioning it for accuracy of description. This is a great Purinton Platter.

These hard to find plates feature the swirls and uneven hand tooled rims that make this line so distinctive.

The Catalonian line was made from 1927 to most likely 1932 when the plant closed. It is not known if the line continued after the plant reopened in March 1936.

Each one of this set of tumblers stands 5 1/4 inches tall x 2 7/8 inch top diameter and holds 12 ounces. There are two in Crystal and two in Honey Gold. Made for cold drinks of ice tea, kool-aid, or lemonade, they are easy to grip and look great. A practical retro vintage design ready for your kitchen today. Price is for the set.

They were made in Dallas, Texas by the Texas Ware Plastics & Manufacturing Company and are so marked in embossed letters on the bottom of each bowl.

The largest bowl, the #125 measures 11 1/4 inches across and stands 5 1/4 inches tall. The middle bowl #118 measures 9 3/4 inches across and stands 4 1/2 inches tall. The smallest bowl #111 measures 8 inches across and stands 4 inches tall.

This is the Texas Ware #111 light pink speckled mixing bowl in good vintage condition. Its main shade is a light almost salmon pink with secondary inclusions of purple and varying shades of darker pink. It is unusual for a Texas Ware bowl to have so few colors. It has light wear in its center with strong gloss at the very center. Buy it and use it. Gorgeous glossy finish on the outside too. FREE of chips, cracks, burns OR discoloration. Use wooden utensils and it will give you years of service. You will NOT be disappointed!!

It is marked only with the shape number 111, but I guarantee it to be a Texas Ware bowl.

Recently one has seen a Texas Ware vintage speckled Melmac bowl on the counter of Rachael Ray's TV kitchen. In fact, in late 2007, Food Network is now having produced and marketing a "Garbage Bowl" in a deep pumpkin color under the Rachael Ray name. Crate & Barrel has also put out a set of melmac bowls, but they just can't compare to the originals!  The Culver Glass company began in Brooklyn, New York in 1939, founded by Irving Rothenberg. Culver Glass features real 22-karat gold decoration, used effusively and magnificently especially from the late 1950s on through the 1960s.

It stands 4 3/4 inches tall and is 5 3/4 inches across the top.

This pattern is known as Prado Green and features three vertical rows of embossed squares of gold with alternating squares of textured green. There is a border of gold embossed diamonds at the top of the pattern. It is in excellent vintage shape and comes with a pair of ice tongs found with it when I purchased it.

Culver Prado Green Ice tub. Think Mad Me

Measuring 4 1/4 inches wide, this bowl by Mid-Century enamelist Harold Tischler clearly shows the influence of Edward Winter. Like Winter, he studied at the Vienna Kunstgewerbeschule from 1927 to 1932 under such greats as Michael Powolny and Josef Hoffman. In fact, It is Tischler who is credited with getting Edward Winter accepted into the school, according to the information on page 275 of the Painting with Fire exhibit companion catalog produced the the Long Beach Museum of Art, whose groundbreaking seminal exhibit opened in January 2007.

In 1935, Tischler visited Winter in Cleveland. During the visit he saw Winter's signature enameling method of immersing the metal in liquid enamel to achieve better coating than simply sifting powdered enamel on the surface. Tischler quickly also adopted this methold which accounts for the similarity in design between the two men's works.

His work was featured in the 1970 Edward Winter book called Enamel Painting Techniques. He died in 1993 at age 100.

This piece features pink ground with striations of gold on its front. The back is counter-enameled in robin's egg blue and is signed in white block letters H. Tischler.
