Antique Sheffield Repousse Silverplate Condiment With Glass Insert
This is an antique Sheffield repousse silver over copper condiment with a glass insert. It also shows some openwork. The repousse is also what is called applique in that it was made separately, being hammered from the back to raise the design on the front and then added on to the body of the.... condiment in this case. The sheet metal, in this case silver over copper was laid over what was called a 'swage' while it was being hammered to give it the intended design. My research has not gone this far but I would think that the 'swage' would have looked much like the inside of a mold and when the silver-plate was hammered into it, it would take on the same dimensions of design that were already in the 'swage'. In this case, we are talking about the grapes and foliage. The body of this condiment has a perforated design consisting of long thin rectangular openings. This condiment bowl is in excellent as made condition. When you look at the close-up photos of the grape design you will see some flat areas on the individual grapes where the hammering simply did not get completed into the entire round of the grape. There is also a close up that shows a gouge and what looks like a tear. I believe that this happened during the pounding but that it was decided to use the section anyway rather than start all over. I may be all wrong or partially wrong in this as I am not an expert so if any of you have different information, please tell me. The glass insert has no chips, cracks, dings or other damage although it does show a long, as made straw mark as you will see in the close up photo. The condiment measures 6 3/4 in diameter and 2 1/4 tall while the insert measures 4 3/16 in diameter and 1 7/16 tall. My research says that the making of Sheffield plate which is the joining of a plate of silver over a plate of copper, ended in the 1860's. Be sure and look over the photos as they are part of the description and can always give a better idea as to condition and quality than I can with the written word. Happy Collecting !!!!
This is a vintage silver plate cup in the Adam pattern by Oneida. The Adam pattern was made in 1917. This cup is in excellent to near mint condition. I hardly ever call any vintage item mint because if you look hard enough with a loop, you will find something about it even if it is only that it needs a good polishing. This measures 2 1/4 tall, 4 1/16 from the edge of the cup to the far end of the handle, and 3 1/8 in diameter. Be sure and check the photos as they are part of the description and do a much better job of telling about condition and quality than I can with the written word. Happy Collecting !!!
This is an antique Hartford Co., silver plate footed condiment holder. It's design dates it from the Aesthetic Movement which started in the 1860's, reaching its heyday in the mid 1870's, and ending in 1900. It has the Hartford mark on the bottom and the second line in the mark appears to be double stamped. I can make out 'Wm Roger' and some numbers. I don't think you will be able to see that in the photos as it is lighter than the Hartford Co mark. This holder measures 13 3/4 tall, 3 3/4 wide and 4 1/2 long. I believe it is possible that there was a glass insert for this at one time, but I have no proof of this as I have never seen this piece before, not even in books. This is in excellent condition with no chips, cracks, dings or other damage. Be sure and look closely at the photos as they are part of the description and can give a much better idea as to condition and quality than I can in writing. When you look at the bottom section, the part where it looks like there is a cover on the bottom, only its not a cover, as it does not come off, it just looks like that...by the bottom seam where that cover meets the base, it looks like either some of the silver-plating has worn off, or maybe it looks that way because you can't get into that area to clean it and polish it and remove the tarnish. I will let you be the judge. I have extra photos taken that I could not fit into this venue so be sure and ask for them if you are interested. Happy Collecting !!!

Beautiful piece with an unusual octagon body. Most are round. Very clean on the inside. Nice antique patina. On close inspection there is a slight dent on the edge of one of the octagon side panels. This precious baby spoon featuring the famous Gerber Baby, one of several that have been released over the years, is marked on the back: Winthrop / Silverplate / Gerber's. The Gerber story began in 1928 on the production lines of the Fremont Canning Company. Know who the real Gerber Baby was? Ann Turner Cook, mystery novelist and retired English teacher, was the subject of a simple charcoal sketch by Dorothy Hope Smith, an artist who specialized in drawing children. Smith submitted her drawing amid elaborate oil paintings and said that she could finish the sketch if it was accepted. The Gerber execs were so taken with it that they claimed it as it was, and the Gerber Baby made her debut. Gerber adopted it as its official trademark in 1931. In good + condition the baby does have a smudge mark over her right eye which I have shown in my pictures and it measures 4 1/4 inches long with a bowl that is 1 3/8 inches by 1 1/2 inches. An addition to any Baby Spoon Collection. SH & Ins. will be quoted after orders placed. If you have questions please contact me and thank you for looking.
