Partial, patriotic regimental letter sheet. 7 1/4 x 4 5/8. Beautiful imprint with vignette of infantry soldiers formed in line with tent scene in the background and 6TH REGIMENT, MICHIGAN INFANTRY above. Below that are bust view illustrations of the commanders of the regiment; F.W. Curtenius, Col., T.S. Clark, Lieut. Col., E. Bacon, Major, and C.W. Killborn, Adjutant. Lithograph by A. Hoen ...probably hear from them tomorrow. We may follow them and I hope we shall. The weather is very warm here now and we sweat pretty freely at our drills, but when we remember that these drills are what will make us better soldiers, make us truer and firmer in the hour of battle we do not mind the sweat or fatigue. We claim to love our Country and we hope to serve her whenever, and wherever we may be called upon to do so. We often think of those we have left at home. Light wear and some scattered staining. Don't be turned off by the fact that this is an incomplete letter sheet and letter. The regimental imprint itself is rare and very desirable. It is also war dated from Ship Island, Mississippi, and we know that a Michigan soldier sent it home to his Mother. At the time, the 6th Michigan Infantry was attached to the Department of the Gulf, and were part of General Benjamin F. Butler's forces. After the capture of New Orleans, the regiment made many excursions into the surrounding country and up and down the Mississippi River, capturing and destroying public property and Confederate supplies, many of the excursions being of an extremely hazardous nature.
