Format: Audio Cassette April 1993 Publisher: Harper Collins Abridged I Love This Game! : My Life and Baseball Author: Kirby Puckett List Price: $17.00 2 Cassettes 2 1/2 Hours Read by Actor Paul Calderon. In a style reflective of his engaging disposition, Puckett relives the events that led to his rise as one of baseball's most proficient and popular players. As the title indicates, the star of the Minnesota Twins harbors a deep respect for the game, a conviction that governs his approach to matters on and off the field. Whether relaying locker room anecdotes, replaying a memorable 1991 World Series, or rehashing a lengthy contract dispute, he seldom wavers from his positive stance. He attributes this trait to the realization that he is living out a lifelong dream. In the same vein, he maintains a proper focus throughout his book, refusing to dwell on incidental issues. Jackie Robinson A Biography Arnold Rampersad Read: Levar Burton New 4 Cassettes 4 Hrs
Jackie Robinson: A Biography by Arnold Rampersad read by Levar Burton BRAND NEW in Shrink Wrap, 1997. 4 CASSETTES, 4 HOURS The extraordinary life of Jackie Robinson is illuminated as never before in this full-scale biography by Arnold Rampersad, who was chosen by Jack's widow, Rachel, to tell her husband's story, and was given unprecedented access to his private papers. We are brought closer than we have ever been to the great ballplayer, a man of courage and quality who became a pivotal figure in the areas of race and civil rights. We follow Robinson through World War II, when, in the first wave of racial integration in the armed forces, he was commissioned as an officer, then court-martialed after refusing to move to the back of a bus. After he plays in the Negro National League, we watch the opening of an all-American drama as, late in 1945, Branch Rickey of the Brooklyn Dodgers recognized Jack as the right player to break baseball's color barrier - and the game was forever changed. Jack's never-before-published letters open up his relation-ship with his family, especially his wife, Rachel, whom he married just as his perilous venture of integrating baseball began. Her memories are a major resource of the narrative as we learn about the severe harass-ment Robinson endured from teammates and opponents alike; about death threats and exclusion; about joy and remarkable success. We follow his blazing career: 1947, Rookie of the Year; 1949, Most Valuable Player; six pennants in ten seasons, and in 1962, induction into the Hall of Fame, (including the full actual recording of his speech). But sports were merely one aspect of his life. We see his business ventures, his leading role in the community, his early support of Martin Luther King Jr., his commitment to the civil rights movement at a crucial stage in its evolution; his controversial associations with Eisenhower, Kennedy, Nixon, Humphrey, Goldwater, Nelson Rockefeller, and Malcolm X. Sosa AN AUTOBIOGRAPHY by Sammy Sosa W/Marcos Breton. Introduction read by Sammy Sosa. Sixteen years later, Sammy was engaged in the most titanic sporting duel of the last half century: a home run race with slugger Mark McGwire to smash Roger Maris' record of sixty-one homers in a single season. How did Sammy Sosa, who never played an inning of organized baseball until he was fourteen, go from a life of crushing poverty to superstardom in the major leagues w/the Chicago Cubs? In SOSA, Sammy tells his story in his own words. The result is a moving, intimate chronicle of a man whose charisma, joy, and sportsmanship - combined with awesome talent make him a favorite of baseball fans everywhere, an unsurpassed hero in his homeland, and a true international ambassador of the game.
