Jeffries stood 6 ft 3 in tall and weighed 225 in his prime. Despite his bulk, Jeffries, who was a trained sprinter, could run the 100 yards in a little more than ten seconds. The world record in 1900 for the 100 yard dash was a little under ten seconds. While working as a sparring partner for James J. Corbett, Jeffries consistently outsprinted Corbett. Corbett was an outstanding all around athlete and had never lost a footrace to any of his campmates. Jeffries was also nimble and could purportedly high jump over six feet. His greatest assets were his enormous strength and stamina. Using a technique taught to him by his trainer, former welterweight and middleweight champion Tommy Ryan, Jeffries fought out of a crouch with his left arm extended forward. He was able to absorb tremendous punishment while wearing his opponents down. A natural left-hander, he possessed one punch knockout power in his left hook. Jeffries has the record for the quickest KO in a heavyweight title fight ever, which was 55 seconds against Finnegan. During his reign as champion, Jeffries defended his title seven times, including two knockout victories over former champion Corbett. He won a 25 round decision over Tom Sharkey. Jeffries broke the ribs of three opponents in title fights: Jim Corbett, Gus Ruhlin, and Tom Sharkey. Jeffries retired undefeated in May of 1905. He served as a referee for the next few years, including the bout in which Marvin Hart defeated Jack Root to stake a claim at Jeffries' vacated title. ====================================================== Keywords: memorabilia collecting collectibles antiques collectable collectables patents print prints 1900ss vintage collecting dealers merchandise artwork for sale cool vintage antique buy shopping print prints shop dealer antique collectible boxer boxing fights

He was best known as Gentleman Jim , the man who defeated the great John L Sullivan. He also coached boxing at the Olympic Club in San Francisco. He stood at 6`1, with a reach of 73 inches. He was college educated and in addition to boxing, pursued a career in acting, performing at a variety of theaters. He has been called the Father of Modern Boxing because of his scientific approach and innovations in technique. Some think that he changed prizefighting from a brawl to an art form. On May 21, 1891, Corbett fought Peter Black Prince Jackson, because the reigning John L. Sullivan wouldn't fight Jackson because he was black. Corbett and Jackson fought to a draw after 61 rounds. On September 7, 1892 at the Olympic Club in New Orleans, Louisiana, Corbett won the World Heavyweight Boxing Championship by knocking out John L. Sullivan in the 21st round. Corbett's new scientific boxing technique enabled him to dodge Sullivan's rushing attacks, and wear him down with jabs. For his only title defense, January 25, 1894 Corbett knocked out Charley Mitchell of Great Britain in three rounds. On September 7 1894 he took part in the production of one of the first recorded boxing events, a fight with Peter Courtney. This was filmed at the Black Maria studio at West Orange, New Jersey, in the USA and was produced by William K.L. Dickson. It was only the second boxing match to be recorded. Jim Corbett lost his title to the Cornish boxer Bob Fitzsimmons on March 17, 1897 in Carson City, Nevada. Corbett was dominant for most of the fight, and Fitzsimmons was badly cut, when Mrs Fitzsimmons called out, Hit him in the slats, Bob! where slats meant the abdominal area. Fitzsimmons then winded Corbett with a hard punch to the solar plexus, and Corbett could not continue within the count. Following his retirement from boxing, Corbett returned to acting, appearing on stage and in film. He authored his autobiography under the title The Roar of the Crowd that was serialized by The Saturday Evening Post in six weekly installments during October-November of 1924. ==================================================== Keywords: memorabilia collecting collectibles antiques collectable collectables patents print prints 1890s vintage collecting dealers merchandise artwork for sale cool vintage antique buy shopping print prints shop dealer antique collectible boxer boxing fights world champions

    Jack Britton Boxing Strip Card
Strip cards were available in the teens and 1920s, and were issued in long strips of cards, which were purchased by children for a penny. These blank backed cards were then cut apart and collected. This particular JACK BRITTON Card measures 2 1/2 x 1 1/2 , and appears to be an actual black JACK BRITTON , and the number 3 . Also, the symbols IFC c. appear backwards on the lower right hand corner of the card. I do believe it to be from approx. 1919-1922, as there were other cards that I acquired in the same collection that were all from the same era, 1919-1922. Shipping is an additional $3.00 within the continental U.S.

Ring Magazine, 1943 Henry Armstrong & Photo
We put together this January RING magazine featuring Henry Armstrong together with an original News Photo of Henry dated to the same time as the magazine. This would make a nice combination in a matted frame. Original Photo dated to the 1940's of Henrey Armstrong, Alias Homicide Hank, and Sports Editor for the New York Post Hugh Bradley. Henry Armstrong has a very impressive record and career. Henry was born on Dec. 12, 1912 in Columbus Mississippi and later calling home St. Louis Missouri. His professional career started on July 27, 1931 against Al Iovino and ended on Valentines day, 1945 to Chester Slider. Henry's Record was 151 wins in which 101 were from KO's, only 21 Lost fights and 9 Drawn. Total fights 181. Henery was a holder of 3 Championships in the Featherweight class, Lightweight class and Welterweight class. New York Times wrote this about his Jan. 24, 1940 fight,,,,, Henry Armstrong vs Pedro Montanez in New York City for World welterweight title. For savagery and bruising fighting, virtually all of it displayed by the irrepressible Armstrong, this was a fight that has seldom been excelled. No welterweight, no man near Armstrong's inches or poundage could have survived the blistering firepower . Montanez was down for the first time in his career in the 4th. Down again at the end of the 8th, he had to be carried to his corner. The referee stopped the fight after 47 seconds of the 9th round. (New York Times). Henry passed away on October 22, 1988. This original photo measures 8 x 10 inches. A RARE photo of a real champ in his time. Top left hand corner has a small repair done, other than that the photo is in excellent condition. The magazine has some pages turned up in the corners, please scroll down to view all pictures. Overall condition is good. Again, this is a rare paired boxing collectible and would display nice together framed.
