Jim Pfeffer: A History & Collector's Guide To Pfeffer Fishing Lures By: Lewis Townsend
Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. Jim Pfeffer lures were produced for over forty years and to many they are considered beautiful works of art. It was amazing that these lures were produced in such great numbers yet in such a very primitive work environment. There is considerable information about Pfeffer Lures that the novice collector needs to know before they start on this journey of lure collecting. This book will provide you with the needed information since collecting Pfeffer Lures comes with a great deal of confusion and uncertainty, largely because many people copied his work. It is well documented that Pfeffer gave some individuals his blessing to duplicate his work and yet did not provide permission to others. Throughout the book, beautiful illustrations will provide you with the clarifying identification you will need. This book will give the new collector a good understanding of the models, colors and patterns Pfeffer produced. It also provides you with a practical grading system to evaluate the most common to the very rarest examples that might be encountered. Using these criteria will be of benefit in determining the value you can expect for any Pfeffer lure. For the seasoned Pfeffer collector there are never enough pictures and documentation of his work! Includes a biography of Jim and Betty Pfeffer; a history of the Pfeffer Lure Company; a history of Denmark's Sporting Goods and their connection to Pfeffer; a detailed discussion of colors and patterns; a comparative analysis of the hardware, rigging, and packaging; chapters on the Orlando Shiner, the Other Shiners, the Cripple, the Banana Lure, the Casting Lures and the Hud-Chug, the Dilly, the Mullet, the Darters, the Pigfish, the Pier Bait, and the Sunfish. Also includes chapters on Prototypes, Repaints, and Mysteries, and a comprehensive analysis of the Woodall and Densmore years of the Pfeffer Company. Truly the definitive work on Jim Pfeffer, one of the greatest lure makers who ever lived!

The Pictorial History Of Knives, Daggers & Bayonets By: Dr Tobias Capwell
Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. The first weapons were conceived around 500,000 years ago and ever since they have played a significant part in shaping human history. Cultures from all over the world crafted fighting blades, many of them so elaborately formed and decorated that they are noted for their beauty and craftsmanship as they are for their brutal capabilities. This stunning book traces the bloody and fascinating history of daggers, dirks and bayonets through to the 21st century. From the appearance of the earliest stabbing tools of the so-named Dagger Period of 15,000 BC it describes the development of these short-edged weapons and their impact upon ancient civilizations such as the Etruscans, Egyptians and Romans. The significance of the dagger in the artistic culture of the Celtic peoples and the role of the scrimasax fighting knife as a Saxon weapon of conquest is also explored. The symbolism of the dagger as part of a knight's armoury is covered, and its importance as a civilian weapon during the Medieval and Renaissance periods as well as in 19th-century America. The book looks at the journey played by fighting blades in military combat from hand-held stabbing tools, to the famous Highland dirk, to the bayonets of World Wars I and II, and 20th-century Commando knives. Weapons from around the world are described, from the Indian Katar to the Japanese Tanto. The book looks at the technical and military accomplishments leading up to the short-edged blade's present-day role as a military weapon, as well as its transformation into an object of modern art. This comprehensive and fully illustrated history of short-edged weapons will be an indispensable resource for both the amateur enthusiast and professional collector. Shown in over 225 beautiful photographs, these extraordinary pieces of craftsmanship will fascinate anyone with an interest in the weapons that have shaped the world.

A Fly Rod In My Sea Bag: Fishing Adventures In Baghdad By: Joel G. Stewart
Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. On May 1st, 2005, a Montana fly angler-turned-sailor arrived in the desert nation of Iraq as part of a coalition of forces working to bring peace to a war-torn countryside. A naval officer assigned to the Multi-National Corps Iraq, Joel Stewart found himself based in Camp Victory on the grounds of Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's former Al Faw Palace. With numerous man-made lakes stocked by the former dictator with a variety of sport fish, in the down hours from a stressful job in a war zone, Commander Stewart did what any good fisherman would do -- he went fishing. With the foresight to have packed a fly rod in his sea bag, in a desert oasis built by a brutal dictator, Stewart began an odyssey unparalleled in the history of fishing. As he discovered the strange fish inhabiting the lakes in the Camp Victory compound, he began to share his catches with friends via the internet. Others, fascinated by Commander Stewart's catches, began to join him, and soon he was teaching numerous others how to fly fish. Thus, the Baghdad School of Fly Fishing was born, an angling club that remained in existence for the remainder of the time American troops were in Iraq. From the many tales of fish caught and released and hooked and lost, to the struggles of finding fishing equipment and how numerous individuals and companies stepped up to the plate, to the growth of the Baghdad Angler's Club, the story of fly fishing in Iraq will fascinate fishermen and non-anglers alike.

Bamboo Heresies: The Writings Of Ralph W. Moon (A 50+ Year Fly Rod Builder)by: Ralph W. Moon
Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. Collector Bookstore Quick Notes: The author, Ralph W. Moon, made bamboo fly rods for over 50 years. In the 1970s, he began teaching others this craft to rodmakers, fly clubs and colleges. Included in the book are Ralph's thoughts on classic fly rods, his life-long passion for bamboo and more. Publishers Full Description: One of the most beloved, and learned, men in the modern history of rodmaking was Ralph W. Moon. Having spent over a half century at the rod bench, from the 1970s onward Ralph mentored dozens of beginning rodmakers, teaching classes on the art at colleges, fly clubs, and FFF conclaves around the Pacific Northwest. Gregory Shockley--a noted rodmaker who learned the trade from Ralph Moon--has compiled and edited a selection of Ralph's writings sure to please everyone from beginning builders to seasoned veterans. They clearly reveal Ralph's towering intellect and excellent command of the language (many people don't know he was once a college English instructor). Included in the book are Ralph's thoughts on classic fly rods, his life-long passion for bamboo, and even scholarly articles on the origins of the word Caddis and a history of an early Western fly angler, Wilford Woodruff. Of lasting value is his chapter on Spiral Bamboo Fly Rods (Ralph being one of the few to actually build spirals) and the most exhaustive analysis heretofore published on the historical development, ergonomic science behind, and modern development of fly rod grips. But perhaps the most delightful selection is what he called his Bamboo Heresies, folksy commentaries and quips on all aspects of rod building he often related on-line and in emails. Having intended to collect these into a book, his untimely passing earlier this year precluded this until Gregory Shockley dedicated his time and effort to go through the huge piles of Ralph's paper and correspondence to collect a selection of Ralph's quotations sure to make everyone smile. Gregory Shockley contributed a heartfelt introduction summing up his two decades of experiences with this kind and gentle soul. Noted authors Buck Goodrich and Jon Lyman also contributed remembrances of Ralph that help to document his wide influence in the fly fishing world. Ralph W. Moon's distinctive voice can be found on every page of this book. It is a lasting tribute to a man who's legacy was great, and a wonderful primer on all aspects of bamboo rodmaking and fishing bamboo for all readers. This is the third volume in the Fly Angler's Desktop Library.

Instead, they have used excellent color photographs and a lifetime of knowledge and experience with fishing lures to create the most complete and convenient single volume available today: Fishing Lure Collectibles, An Encyclopedia of the Early Years, 1840 to 1940. Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. Finally! An Easy-to-Understand Collector's Guide to Volcanics! Widely regarded as The Gun that Won the West, Winchester repeating rifles occupy a special place in the hearts of the American public†not to mention audiences of Hollywood Western movies worldwide. But without the lesser-known Volcanic Repeating Arms Co., none of that would ever have happened. This book tells us the story of five men who would become giants in the history of arms manufacturing (Hunt, Jennings, Smith, Wesson, Henry and Winchester) and illustrates the best surviving examples of the pistols and longarms that were produced when their creative and business talents briefly intersected, commingles and then separated. Without risk of exaggeration, what you hold in your hands is a veritable explosion of brilliant color photography, showing some of the most beautiful guns ever made. However, more than a coffee-table book, it is an indispensable guide to the identification, authentication, categorization and historical legacy of these intriguing weapons and their accoutrements. Nothing like it has ever appeared before, and we are confident that the publication of this book will change Volcanic collecting forever. Until now, even prestigious dealers and auction houses were often confused by the seemingly senseless tangle of variations, models, frame sizes, company names, markings and features that are all part and parcel of the complex Volcanic story. The time to end this confusion is now!

Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. Table of Contents: - - - - - - It has been more than 20 years since a major work on switchblades has been published, and never has one showcased as many different types of automatic knives as Rich Langston's welcome new book. The Collector's Guide to Switchblade Knives contains a history of the early cutlery industry in the United States, a detailed examination of the evolution of switchblade knives, and a user-friendly illustrated guide that helps collectors and novices alike identify all kinds of automatic knives from one-of-a-kind museum-quality antiques to Great-Grandfather's old folder that's been gathering dust in the attic for the past 100 years. Using a dual grading system, this reference gives an honest appraisal of more than 160 automatic knives based on: manufacturer tang markings condition availability functioning opening mechanism handle and blade materials. All of the knives in this book are from the author's personal collection, which he has been assembling since the age of 7 when he saw his first switchblade and fell under its spell. The knives include examples from the early days of the fledgling cutlery industry in New England to the current imports finding their way into the United States (despite the restrictive laws in the late 1950s that all but outlawed switchblades in this country). New opportunities to acquire and trade switchblades through such Web sites as eBay have sent prices skyrocketing, making older price guides totally unreliable. This handsome hardcover addition to the cutlery library is for collectors, switchblade aficionados, edged-weapons enthusiasts, historians, or anyone even thinking of buying or selling a switchblade. This book features: Schrade Boker Presto Remington Flylock Shur-Snap Hammer Remington and MORE!

Pa Valley Dawgs Mini Basketball Signed Darrel Dawkins
This mini pro red, white and blue basketball was signed by Darrel Dawkins, the coach of the Pennsylvania Valley Dawgs United States basketball league team, and former 76ers and NJ Nets player. We are not exactly sure of the age of the basketball, which the previous owner had signed by Dawkins while attending a game coached by Dawkins. Darrel became the coach of the Dawgs in 1999 and went on with the team to win the U.S. championships in both 2001 and 2004. Prior to this, his accomplishments include being named as one of the 10th best dunkers of all time. Ball is in very good overall condition, and had been stored in plastic by the previous owner once the signature had been obtained, which had been removed to take pictures. Signature is of Dawkins' name along with #53 and Chocolate Thunder (his number and nickname while playing with the Nets). Slight cracking of the red and blue paint, just from aging and not from use. Ball has lost some air, but could easily be re-inflated using a bicycle pump.

D Is For Dingley: The Master Reelmaker (C1900 Era Fishing Reels) By: Patrick Garner, Brian Taylor
Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. From Patrick Garner and Brian Taylor comes the definitive work on the life and career of W.H. Dingley. William Henry Dingley was arguably the most skilled English reelmaker of the 20th century. An inventor and consummate craftsman, Dingley's genius dominated more than 50 years of tackle history, an unrivaled feat. Both fishermen and collectors avidly seek his reels today. This book is the first that focuses on his life and his wide variety of reels. From the late 19th century through three quarters of the 20th, Britain produced highly accomplished reel makers who, for more than a century, produced the finest fishing reels in the world. W.H. Dingley, who spent more than half of his life in the small country town of Alnwick, Northumberland in the northeast of England, is increasingly recognized as one of the most skilled of these exceptional craftsmen. Collectors know his works today by the now famous D that is often stamped inside his reels. Although providing extensive biographical details--much of it in print for the first time--the book's prime purpose is to illustrate Dingley reels. Numerous photographs are provided, as well as rarely seen cuts of period catalogs. Research for the book included interviewing ex-Hardy and ex-Dingley reel makers, handling original documents, corresponding with Dingley family members, and correcting rumors and previously published errors. Collectors from around the world sent the authors their prized examples of Dingley reels for analysis and photo-documentation. More than 60 Dingley reels are illustrated--including a number both rare and spectacular. Photographs illustrate exterior features, as well as internal gearing. Subtle period differences are shown, and numerous variations illustrated. Dingley continued to work steadily until his death in 1946 at the age of 85. By the time he died, he had worked largely without pause in the English reel trade for almost 71 years--33 of those years as a proprietor and entrepreneur. Looking back over the last 150 years of reel making, the authors conclude that few reel makers of any era rival Dingley in his production, creativity, and tenacious standards.

About how he taught himself to be an underwater camera man and then became so proficient his photos graced the covers of hundreds of magazines. You'll read his anecdotes about many of the largest bass caught during his lifetime, and his successful foray into the tackle business with the patented Lau Lure. The book includes over 80 stunning full color underwater photos from Glen's extensive photo library, showing big bass at all stages of development, at rest, mating, and feeding. Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. Signed by the author A first-class book about antique folding fruit knives -- the first comprehensive volume on the subject. BOOK REVIEW Reviewed by Knife World Staff Pocket fruit knives are folding knives which contain a cutting blade intended specifically for fruit. Because the acid in fruit juices will rapidly discolor a carbon steel blade, cutlers offered these knives with blades of silver, gold, or silver plate (rarely other materials), which better resist corrosion. With an elegant fruit knife in your pocket, you were prepared for whatever fruit-dining opportunity might present itself. Perhaps no area of knife collecting has been so unfairly neglected as these fruit knives. In design, quality and ornamentation many represent the pinnacle of the cutler's art, and yet it seems that relatively little attention has been paid to them. Inexplicably, collector values have languished well below those fetched by steel-bladed knives of comparable quality, but perhaps that's all about to change. This new book entitled Pocket Fruit Knives is the work of Simon Moore, the leading expert in the field and since 1975, the author of many articles on fruit knives and early European cutlery for The National Knife Magazine, Silver Magazine, and others (he's also penned three booklets for Shires Album series). This book shares its format, retail price, and high standard with The London Knife Book reviewed last month - no coincidence as both are published by David Watson of Antique Knives Ltd. The book is divided into chapters covering: A Brief History of Pocket and Fruit Knives in Europe up to 1650; Early French Pocket Fruit Knives; Pocket Fruit Knives From Other Countries (primarily the U.S.); as well as four lengthy chapters on the evolution, peak, and decline of English Pocket Fruit Knives from the 1700s to 1940. The coverage of French and English fruit knives of all eras is truly outstanding, and far surpasses all previous publications on the subject. While French specimens are rarer here in the U.S. than in Europe, English-made fruit knives are easily the most often encountered and the most popularly collected, making this book an important resource. Coverage of American fruit knives as well as those made in other countries is more basic, but I still cant point to any other source that does a better job. The text is clearly written and well organized, and are accompanied by well over 600 illustrations. Like most other books on collectibles, the photographs are a HUGE drawing card - not just because they're clear and of decent size, but because they show so many fine knives. The hundreds of fruit knives pictured here range from common examples that collectors encounter with frequency, to a wide variety of extremely rare specimens - including some of the finest known. I thought that I would list a few of the more exotic examples pictured, to give one a taste of how complete this book is. Of course there are countless fruit knives with silver blades and mother of pearl (nacre) or tortoiseshell handles, but the number with gold blades is amazing, and handle materials extend to agate, enamel, ivory and fancy celluloid. Some are elaborately inlaid with silver or gold wire (pique work), bits of contrasting shell, and even diamonds and split pearls. There are unusual mechanisms like slotted, slide-out, and butterfly fruit knives, and one even has a mechanism to close the slot between the scales when the blade is open (wow!) You'll find pocketknives containing silver fruit blades, and fruit knives with fork, nut pick, and orange peeler blades. One fruit knife shown has a kukri-shaped silver blade! But some of my favorite photos are those that aren't pretty. There are quite a few shots of early fruit knives that have been disassembled to show hallmarks concealed on a blade's tang. And fourteen superbly illustrated pages are devoted to fruit knife construction, common faults, repair, and fakery and how to spot each. The author even provides guidelines as to how much such faults will affect the collector value of a given piece. Speaking of values, Moore has thoughtfully provided us with a separate insert suggesting approximate collector values for each knife illustrated. Though the value ranges are somewhat wide and are listed in British Pounds (1 GBP = approximately US $1.60 as of this writing) this is a great idea. Values seem a bit on the high side for the U.S. market - but that may change with the publication of this book. Four important pages are devoted to identification of makers hallmarks, something that collectors should really appreciate. There is also a glossary, a bibliography, and a very detailed index which I anticipate using often. Pocket Fruit Knives is without question the finest resource ever compiled for fruit knife enthusiasts - coupled with a basic guide to hallmarks, most collectors may not need another book on the subject. Collectors of antique English and French folding knives in general will also find much to like here, and it will appeal to the maker of Art Knives as a source of inspiration in the same way that The Antique Bowie Knife Book has. But don't be surprised if it leads you to collect these vintage gems! The London Knife Book: An A-z Guide To London Cutlers 1820-1945 By: Ron Flook
Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. Signed by the author Written by the respected knife historian, collector and author, Ron Flook, this new publication is an informational and reference tool on antique London knives, knife makers and cutlery dealers. With high quality color photography and concise, detailed content, The London Knife Book is expected to change the face of London knife trading and collecting by providing collectors with a great deal of previously unpublished information. BOOK REVIEW Reviewed by Knife World Staff Author Ron Flook's name should be familiar to most Knife World readers - if not for his occasional contributions to this publication, for his books on military knives (which include British & Commonwealth Military Knives - the definitive work on the subject.) But you may not be aware that the author's love for English cutlery extends far beyond military edged weapons, to include the fixed blade and folding knives that earned Great Britain its reputation as the world's cutlery center. While the city of Sheffield has for centuries attracted most of the attention, the cutlers of London achieved an equally high standard - and yet the city has largely been overlooked by cutlery historians. In digesting Mr. Flook's latest book, one is struck by the notion that it should do much to help correct this oversight and give London's cutlers the recognition that has been withheld for so long. Perhaps the best way to describe The London Knife Book is to suggest that its format resembles the highly regarded Goins' Encyclopedia of Cutlery Markings, but with crisp, clear, full color photographs (the work of publisher David Watson) and of course focused specifically on the cutlery makers and retailers of London. The bulk of the book (215 pp.) is devoted to an A-Z Listing of London Cutlers which is a compilation of known makers & retailers, their addresses and dates of operation, and a short history of each firm if that information is known. There are literally hundreds of entries, covering the better known firms like Evans & Co., Holtzapffel, Paget, Thornhill, Underwood, Weiss, and Wilkinson to those such as Clements, Cogswell & Harrison, J. Drew & Sons, Hill & Son, Lund, and Savigny, and of course a great many of the obscure variety. Few of these firms have been well documented in the cutlery literature, and I would venture that the majority of makers and retailers are listed here for the very first time. This is a tribute to the amount of original research conducted in the course of assembling this book, and is The London Knife Book's most significant contribution to the field. Accompanying the listings are many rare knives and other fine cutlery items with a London association. Hunting knives, bowies, and folding knives of all kinds (especially multiblade examples) are very well represented, and there are also a few surgical instruments, straight razors, folding saws, hunters axes and other items scattered throughout - enough to remind us that London's cutlers produced more than just the obvious. The large closeup photos of particularly significant pieces are a nice touch, and collectors of unusual cutlery will find many things to appreciate here - from pocketknives with unusual special-purpose blades or opening mechanisms, to a 19th century throwing star that will look familiar to Randall collectors, to English hunting knives that bear a strong resemblance to those popular in California's Gold Rush days. The London Knife Book is an important addition to the cutlery literature, and an absolutely essential reference for everyone with an interest in English cutlery of the 19th and 20th centuries - after all, it's the only book likely to identify the more obscure London cutlery firms. Those who simply appreciate bowie knives and high grade pocket cutlery will also find much to appreciate here as well. Hats off to Mr. Flook for delivering another superb book on a subject that was in real need of one. Goins' Encyclopedia Of Cutlery Markings (Antique Knife & Razor)
Collector Bookstore is a retailer of new books located in Leavenworth, Kansas. We specialize in price guides and reference books for the antiques and collectibles industry. Goins' Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition is one of the most talked about books in recent memory. Since the first Encyclopedia became required reading for all cutlery collectors 12 years ago, John and Charlotte Goins have been deluged with ever more questions, queries, and bits of information on old firms and markings. Increasingly, collectors have wondered if and when there might be an update to that knife collector's bible. Friends, the answer is yes, and that day is finally here. For those of you unfamiliar with the Goins Book, Goins' Encyclopedia contains summaries of the known history behind practically every marking found on antique cutlery. There are literally thousands of cutlery manufacturers, importers, dealers, hardware firms, barber supply companies, and the like included in its scope. When it comes to historial information on the brands of old knives, razors, or anything else that goes 'cut,' Goins' Encyclopedia is far and away the best single resource.
