1898 Naval Ship Print USS Indiana, Forward Deck, Spanish American War
Original book page which appears to have photos, from "The Battle with Spain", published by New York Monthly Company, New York in 1898. Not a reproduction, but page from an antique issue of this book (we guarantee this), with an antique print on each side of the page; on one side it's the Coast-line Battleship Indiana, with the other the Forward Deck of the First-Class Battleship Indiana (please note that there is another photo from the USS Indiana in item #1282). The deck photo includes "the heavy guns protruding from the forward turret", which are stated to be breech-loading rifles of a calibre of 13 inches, 40 feet long.
The book showed pictures of naval vessels, navy ships, battleships, cruisers, gunboats, etc., which were part of the U.S. Navy at the time of the war with Spain (or the Spanish American war, the one with "Remember the Maine!"). Under the photos on both sides there is a copyright line, "Copyrighted, 1895, by William H. Rau." There is a paragraph describing the ship or deck underneath each photo.
Excellent condition black & white photographs, on full page measuring about 13 inches wide x 11 inches high. No major bending or yellowing. There is a tear in the white margin area, about 2 1/4 inches in length starting at the edge of the page, but this is sufficiently distanced from the photo or description (about 1 1/4 inches away) that it could be easily covered by a mat when framing. There is very minor page or corner edge wear and expected handling wear for a book page (no large creases, but the little within-the-page handling bumps or small creases that you see from a page being handled or turned within a book; we judge that this would not be noticeable framed), and on the ship photo, some light brown vertical line dirt at the bottom in the white margin area (also coverable by a mat). There is also the expected uneven edge where the page was taken from the book.
The book covers were in very bad shape, so we removed the good pages and are selling them separately. A terrific piece to add to a collection related to the Spanish American War, the 1898 War, or a collection relating in general to the U.S. Navy or US Navy Vessels, Ships, Battleships, Warships, etc.
