2279

Mermaid & Lobster Fisherman Print Sat. Evening Post Norman Rockwell Fun small size framed print out of a home. This is a small size reproduction of a famous Saturday Evening Post magazine cover created by artist Norman Rockwell, that is double matted in a frame under glass.

Rockwell titled this "The Mermaid", with it appearing as the cover for the August 20, 1955 issue of the Saturday Evening Post. A humorous or "tongue in cheek" piece showing an older Lobster Fisherman lugging home his catch at the end of the day, but he has caught a Mermaid in his Lobster trap instead of lobsters!

A small size to easily fit in a small space or corner, with the frame measuring about 10 1/2 inches high x about 8 3/4 inches in width. This older framed art print weighs slightly over one pound unpacked and would be shipped in a box with bubble wrap and plastic peanuts for safety.

The print is double matted in the frame, with the outer mat printed to look like burlap or a food/fishing sack to go along with the fishing theme, with the mattes covered by glass that is lower inset into the frame, so the frame has a depth of about 3/4 inch. The frame is either a thick paperboard type or paper covered particle board type, which looks to us like an inexpensive type of frame. From the backside, you can see that the frame uses staple tabs or bent staples to hold the print in the frame, but these have been covered with thick clear tape for greater hold, so the print is secure in the frame. On the backside the prior owner taped some information about this Norman Rockwell print, as well as a manufacturer label for Decorative Arts, with the Item #7615, stating that the print is Protected by Art Glass, so this may be how this print was originally sold in its original matte/frame. The frame is hung via a metal sawtooth piece at the top, still firmly attached, but there is also part of a velcro piece still attached which the prior owner may have added for use in hanging this art.

From the subject matter, frame style, etc., this piece looks to us like it dates from the 1970s, not new but vintage. We've included images from varied angles, including closeups, to provide a good idea of this piece. Please note that the camera light causes white "hot spot" reflections on the glass. Please examine the images closely, using the zoom feature.

Very nice, very usable condition with minor age wear, ready to hang and enjoy. No chips, cracks, crazing, pieces missing, yellowing or fading. The Norman Rockwell reproduction print and the mattes are clean, no marks or water stains, all crisp and in great shape. The frame shows some light wear on the other corner edges & sides, but otherwise in very nice shape. As noted above, the backside has extra tape, etc., but nothing you would see from the front, so this will look great hanging on the wall..

A nifty piece that could bring a smile to the face of a fisherman, and might encourage them to tell you of their most unique catch! May also be of interest as part of a mermaid related collection, or a humorous addition to any collection with a nautical, ocean, fishing, or lobster fishing theme, or one related to Norman Rockwell art pieces.

1578

1800s Bufford's Oil Chromo Boston Framed Print Lithograph, Young Girls Wonderful framed antique chromolithograph or print from ca. mid 1800's of two young girls who appear to be holding some cherries. There is a tree and a ladder in the background so perhaps they had just picked the cherries from the tree. Print retains beautiful muted color and is fully visible in the glass of the frame (print appears to sit on top of a gold colored matte board, or is attached to the matte on its backside). Since it is in a sealed frame we don't know if this is the original size of the print or whether it has been trimmed to be inserted in this frame. The lithograph itself appears to be in excellent condition with just a touch of edge chipping/damage on the upper right side.

The antique print is signed/marked on the topside lower right with "Bufford's Oil Chromo Boston". Some of these letters are a bit hard to read but from looking at other pieces by this firm we believe this is what is shown. From a little bit of internet research, John H. Bufford operated Bufford's Lithographic & Publishing House (also known as Bufford's Print Publishing House) in the Boston, Massachusetts area from about 1857-1864. The company operated under other names both before and after that so we believe it is likely this print dates to that period. It looks to us to be an original lithograph and not a reproduction.

Overall frame measurements are about 8 x 10 inches. The print appears to be about 5 1/2 x 7 1/2 inches. The vintage wood frame also seems to be of the late 1800s to early 1900s era. It has curved corners and slightly indented sides. As you can see in the images, however, the two lower corners of the frame are damaged (we tried to show this better in one close-up). There are also line hairlines of varied lengths on the topside four corner areas. On the reverse side of the frame there is some damage to the paper covering applied to the outside of the frame. Since this paper does not appear "aged" we do not believe this print originally was sold in this frame but was likely put in the frame much more recently. However, to ua the gold coloring to the wood frame is a lovely compliment to the gold type image coloring of the lithograph itself, and despite the frame damage, the print appears to work well with this frame. One might be able to touch up or otherwise fix up the frame damage but we are selling this as is/as found with its "Shabby Chic" appearance.

Please note that the white "hot spots" in some of the images are reflections from the camera lighting on the glass. This lighting also lessens the intensity of the coloring of the print....it is darker and richer in color in person than what we can show here. Sorry, but this was the best our camera could depict.

A lovely antique print despite the frame flaws which could work well in a girl's room or with other antique related décor.

For shipping purposes, this framed antique lithograph weighs one pound unpacked.

1716

Framed Reproduction of October Calendar Floral Print Very nicely framed floral print ready for hanging. Appears to be a copy or reproduction of an antique calendar print or page for the month of October done on a textured paper or board (we haven't removed print from frame so we don't know which this is). Ornate floral design with names of actual flowers listed beneath flower image. Double matted in a gold then beige or light tan matte with a textured look. This has all been inserted into a painted gold frame with glass, that has cardboard backing and a saw tooth bar at the top back of the frame for hanging on a nail on the wall.

Rectangular with total outer frame measurements of about 9 1/8 inches by 11 1/8 inches. The gold ridged wood frame is about 3/4 inch in width and 7/8 inch greatest depth. Print hangs vertically. We can not tell you the total size of the print under the mattes since we have not disassembled the print from the frame. The topside glass opening measures about 7 1/2 x 9 1/2 inches.

Very nice used condition with no major flaws (no chips, cracks, etc. visible). There likely is some usual light expected use/age wear to the frame or glass, but nothing is jumping out at us here...there's nothing to worry about with the condition. Just a great little picture ready to fit a corner of a room.

For shipping purposes, this framed print weighs over one pound unpacked.

Click here to enlarge image and see more about item 23491: 1883 Framed Puck Magazine Cover New York City Tammany Hall Political

Click for more detail...

23491

1883 Framed Puck Magazine Cover New York City Tammany Hall Political Neat find out of a home. This is a framed antique magazine cover, matted and under glass in a wood frame. This looks to be an original Puck Magazine cover dated September 19,1883 for Vol. XIV No. 341 of the magazine, which sold then for 10 cents.

The cover art is a political cartoon by Bernhard Gillam, marked Gillam on the lower left, entitled "The Temptation" on the bottom center. This is satirizing New York City and New York state politics. It depicts the Tammany organization (Tammany Hall) as a snake (it states "Tammany" on the snake) holding an apple in its mouth that is labelled "Harmony", The apple is being offered to two figures, one labelled "Irving Hall" with the name "Davidson" on a ribbon extending from the cap on his head. The other seated figure is labelled "County Democrats" on his belt with the name "H. O. Thompson" on the lower end of his clothes. The cartoon appears to be a play on the Snake, Adam and Eve from the Bible.

This original Puck cover is double matted with pink and green mats within a two tone wood frame. Total frame size is about 16 3/4 inches tall x 13 1/2 inches wide and about 7/8 inch depth to the wood frame (exclusive of the double metal hanging hooks on the backside). While an antique magazine cover, we are not certain of the frame age. It is not brand new but from the wood frame style and clean paper frame backing, this could have been framed in the past 20-30+ years, we don't know. This is how we got this out of a home and we have not attempted to open the frame to examine the cover.

We've provided 8 images to try and show from varied angles and close-ups. Please note that the camera light causes white "hot spot" reflections on the glass, so we could not shoot images head-on but used varied angles to show detail and condition as best we could. Please use the zoom feature to examine closely.

Excellent overall condition with minor frame wear. The Puck cover looks to be printed on newspaper type paper. It appears to be in wonderful shape under the glass, with all art details clear and clean. We can see a few dot holes in the blank paper area outside the graphics in the bottom right corner, and on close inspection you can see hints of what must be printed on the backside of the cover, such as parts of lines, etc. The vintage frame shows expected minor wear, nothing bad, but there are spots on the topside and edges with nicks, scars, wear marks, etc.

A fun antique piece of political cartoon history which would catch attention hanging on a wall and make a great gift for anyone interested in the political history of New York City or New York state.
