Vintage Paragon China Tea Cup & Saucer Inside Decor Orchid Silver Red
Lovely antique or vintage teacup (tea cup) and saucer made and marked by Paragon China on the underside base of both pieces. Pale orchid or very light purple (not pink) primary color with decoration in silver in a stylistic leafy/floral pattern, also having raised round red dots of paint (you can feel these red dots with your finger). The decoration appears to us to be hand painted and is on the topside of the saucer and interior of the cup. The outside of the cup is base white porcelain (these are translucent) or bone china, with some line silver decoration encircling the cup and on the handle (the handle also has some red paint on the top).
Saucer is largely round with a slightly fluted edge (trimmed in silver), having a lowered or indented section in the middle for seating the cup, measuring about 5 1/2 inches diameter and sitting about 7/8 inch in height. The cup is also basically round with a fluted edge on the top and base (also silver lined), and cinches in prior to flaring out slightly for the base. There is an ornately curved handle on one side. Top opening diameter of the cup is about 3 7/8 inches with a total width to the outside of the handle of 4 13/16 inches. The cup sits about 2 1/2 inches total height (to top of the handle). When first placed on a table or on the saucer, the cup shakes slightly before settling still. The two pieces together sit about 2 5/8 inches total height.
Both pieces show the same Paragon mark on the underside bases in a dark brown/almost black, with some hand painted numbers in red. The mark has the Paragon name, then appears to show two royal warrants or appointments, under which it states "By Appointment to H.M. The Queen & H.M. Queen Mary" under which is "Fine Bone China, England, Reg'd". We don't know the name of this vintage Paragon pattern, but perhaps the red painted numbers on the saucer underside, "977 96/3" indicate the pattern. We also don't know the date of these pieces, but from the two royal appointments, we think this could date to the 1930's or 1940's.
We've provided 8 images to try and show from varied angles, including the Paragon mark on each piece. One image was shot without the camera light since it creates white "hot spot" reflections and sometimes blands out the detail (although the image without the light appears darker). Please use the zoom feature to examine closely. Together these two pieces weigh slightly over 7 ounces unpacked.
Wonderful vintage condition with no major chips, cracks, utensil marks, crazing or anything unusual for the age. There is indication of age/wear via some tiny scratches, some are only visible at an angle in bright light, there are a few scratches on the saucer that appear as white lines/spots among the orchid color, still not bad. if you go looking closely you can see these but nothing that would detract on display. There is some slight wear to the silver decor (some paint wear on the silver, most visible on the inner silver circle on the saucer and light wear elsewhere, and you can see some scratches on the thicker silver lines when viewed at an angle, but nothing unexpected or bad, the silver is 90-95%+ still there). There is other general wear via a few spots/dots/dark dots on the porcelain and decor, a small scratched & indented area on the underside of the saucer that may be as made or could be a low chip since it is unglazed (not along a rim/base, but in open area on the bottom). As made in manufacture there are raised dots of extra porcelain & paint, stray silver & red dots/spots from the hand painting (seen mainly as tiny spots on outside of cup), etc. The raised red dots/decor appears to all be there in great shape.
Impressive vintage Paragon cup & saucer set which would be eye-catching on display.
