Lg Antique Art Nouveau Lithograph Print “Hope” / Famous Listed Artist: George Frederick Watts This is a large antique lithograph titled, "Hope", by famous listed artist, George Frederick Watts. This is one of Watts’s best known works of art. This picture features a blindfolded woman sitting on what is believed to be the world. She embraces a lyre of which every string is broken … but one. Above, the sky entertains a single star. With its blues and greys, the work is reminiscent of some of Picasso’s blue period works, such as his ’Tragedy’. I have included extensive information about this famous work of art and the artist. This very compelling lithograph has wonderfully appealing colors. It has hand-colored highlights. The print is in excellent original condition. It has an original, complimentary cherry wood frame that retains a wonderful old patina. Original glass. New wire hanger. Circa 1920’s.

*** I’ve included some very interesting info, below, about the famous, well-known painting titled, HOPE:

"George Frederick (1817-1904) was a Victorian English painter and sculptor associated with the Symbolist Movement. Forsyth notes that for Watts, ‘Art . . . is a branch of sacred hermeneutics. Let natural beauty be what it may, artistic beauty is higher. And why? because it is spiritual. Because you have in Art the finished product of which Nature is but the initial stage’. Art is nature ‘born again’ and ‘is to Nature what salvation is to the soul’.

Though Watts shares a Victorian fascination with death, Forsyth asserts that this fascination with death is not to be condemned as morbid since ‘Like Art itself, Death is one of the great interpreters and expanders of life’. Forsyth writes that of the artists of his day, ‘Mr. Watts is our only artist who is capable of wrestling with death and therefore the only one who understands life’. For beyond death Watts has seen the power of love triumphant and has recognized in death itself ‘the arm of the Lord and the shadow of His wing’. His work therefore expresses a truly ’supernatural hope’.

In one of his best known works, ‘Hope’, Watts pictures a blind folded woman sitting on what we take to be the world. She embraces a lyre of which every string is broken … but one. Above, the sky entertains a single star. With its blues and grays, the work is reminiscent of some of Picasso’s blue period works, such as his ’Tragedy’.

But is Watts depicting despair or something else? Forsyth argues that here in this work we have the depiction not of hope itself, but certainly of one who hopes. Like her Victorian Age, she has conquered the world, and yet such conquering has brought her neither joy, peace or power. She has turned her face away from ‘heaven’s light’ ‘and now, with earth searched and heaven to explore, her gaze is not up but down, her heaven-searching power of faith is quenched’. But quenched does not mean despair, for ‘the thirst to believe is still there. Look how the darkened soul stoops and strains for the one string’s note, for the one voice to tell her a gospel that all her achievement has not yet attained, and all the round and mastered world cannot promise. The soul has in its own self and nature a note that Nature has not. But is that note of nature only in the soul? Is it a subjective dream of its own? Is there any promise in the ‘not-ourselves’? . . . Yes, there is one star, though the poor soul sees it not. The painter sees it, and we see it. A star is there and a dim dawn.’"

*** I’ve also included, below, a short bio about the famous listed artist: GEORGE FREDERICK WATTS:

"In his own lifetime George Frederic Watts (1817-1904), was widely considered to be the greatest painter of the Victorian age, enjoying an unparalleled reputation. His ceaseless experimentation embodied the most pressing themes and ideas of the time. A complex figure, Watts was the finest and most penetrating portraitist of his age, a sculptor, landscape painter and symbolist which earned him the title ‘England’s Michelangelo.’

His fame and renown was not limited to Britain and in 1884 he was the first living artist to have a solo exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, a show so enormously successful that it led to a longer run and a gift of his great work, Love and Life to the American people. His works also found great favour in Europe winning gold medals at the Paris Universal Exhibitions in 1878 and 1889. His influence among symbolists was profound and can be seen in the works of Gustave Moreau and Fernand Knopff.

The work of G F Watts is of seminal importance in understanding the Victorian period because he was one of its most notable artistic innovators. Watts’s own refusal to become part of any painting movement coupled with the reaction of early twentieth century critics to all things Victorian left his reputation a little tarnished. Ironically, that outspoken critic of Victorian painting, Roger Fry, considered Watts an exception. Fry recognized his great importance within the British School, as shown by his visits with his students to the Watts Picture Gallery. Until the late 1930s, the Tate Gallery had a Watts room which exclusively showed the work of the artist. The legacy of his Hall of Fame portraits form a major part of the National Portrait Gallery’s nineteenth century holdings and the Tate Gallery’s huge collection are a tribute to his importance."

Large Sepia Tone Antique Print “The Wind” / Famous Listed Artist: Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot / J.B. Corot This is a very captivating antique print titled, "The Wind" by famous listed artist, Jean-Baptiste-Camille Corot (1796-1875), signed on the back label, "J.B. Corot". This picture captures the forceful energy of the wind. The mighty wind and its power over humanity is effectively displayed in this picture. The stark, rough landscape contrasts with the resilient human spirit that lives and works off this harsh land. The bottom right corner of print has the publishers name, but is indiscernible. This wonderful work of art is in excellent original condition. The complimentary and decorative wood frame is veneered with choice grain and retains the original finish with black inset. The frame is also in excellent original condition. There are two original labels on the back of the frame. One reads, "Made Only By: R.M. Manufacturing Company", along with a handwritten Item ‘No.’ and a handwritten name on the line, ‘For’. The other label reads the title, "The Wind" and the artist’s name, "J.B. Corot". Original glass, new wire hanger. Circa 1900.

*** I’ve included, below, some interesting info about the famous listed artist, JEAN-BAPTISTE CAMILLE COROT:

"Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot (July 17, 1796 - February 22, 1875) was a French landscape painter and printmaker in etching. Corot was the leading painter of the Barbizon school of France in the mid-nineteenth century. He is a pivotal figure in landscape painting and his vast output simultaneously references the Neo-Classical tradition and anticipates the plein-air innovations of Impressionism.

Of him Claude Monet exclaimed ‘There is only one master here—Corot. We are nothing compared to him, nothing.’ His contributions to figure painting are hardly less important; Degas preferred his figures to his landscapes, and the classical figures of Picasso pay overt homage to Corot's influence.

Historians somewhat arbitrarily divided his work into periods, but the point of division is never certain, as he often completed a picture years after he began it. In his early period, he painted traditionally and "tight" — with minute exactness, clear outlines, thin brush work, and with absolute definition of objects throughout. After his 50th year his methods changed to focus on breadth of tone and an approach to poetic power conveyed with thicker application of paint, and about 20 years later, from about 1865 onwards, his manner of painting became full of mystery and poetry, created with a more impressionistic touch. In part, this evolution in expression can be seen as marking the transition from the plein-air paintings of his youth, shot through with warm natural light, to the studio-created landscapes of his late maturity, enveloped in uniform tones of silver. In his final 10 years he became the "Père (Father) Corot" of Parisian artistic circles, where he was regarded with personal affection, and acknowledged as one of the five or six greatest landscape painters the world has seen, along with Hobbema, Claude Lorrain, Turner, and Constable. In his long productive life, he painted over 3,000 paintings.

Corot approached his landscapes more traditionally than is usually believed. By comparing even his late period tree-painting and arrangements to those of Claude Lorrain, such as that which hangs in the Bridgewater gallery, the similarity in methods is seen. Compared to the Impressionists who came later, Corot’s palette is restrained, dominated with browns and blacks ("forbidden colors" among the Impressionists) along with dark and silvery green. Though appearing at times to be rapid and spontaneous, usually his strokes were controlled and careful, and his compositions well-thought out and generally rendered as simply and concisely as possible, heightening the poetic effect of the imagery. As he stated, "I noticed that everything that was done correctly on the first attempt was more true, and the forms more beautiful."

In the 1860’s, Corot became interested in photography, taking photos himself and becoming acquainted with many early photographers, which had the effect of suppressing his painting palette even more in sympathy with the monochromic tones of photographs. This had the result of making his paintings even less dramatic but somewhat more poetic, a result which caused some critics to cite a monotony in his later output. Théophile Thoré wrote that Corot "has only a single octave, extremely limited and in a minor key; a musician would say. He knows scarcely more than a single time of day, the morning, and a single color, pale grey." Corot responded:

‘What there is to see in painting, or rather what I am looking for, is the form, the whole, the value of the tones…That is why for me the color comes after, because I love more than anything else the overall effect, the harmony of the tones, while color gives you a kind of shock that I don’t like. Perhaps it is the excess of this principal that makes people say I have leaden tones.’

In his aversion to shocking color, Corot sharply diverged from the up-and-coming Impressionists, who embraced experimentation with vivid hues. In addition to the landscapes (so popular was the late style that there exist numerous forgeries), Corot produced a number of prized figure pictures. While the subjects were sometimes placed in pastoral settings, these were mostly studio pieces, drawn from the live model with both specificity and subtlety. Like his landscapes, they are characterized by a contemplative lyricism, with his late paintings L’Algerienne (Algerian Woman) and La Jeune Grecque (The Greek Girl) being fine examples. Corot painted about fifty portraits, mostly of family and friends. He also painted thirteen reclining nudes, with his Les Repos (1860) strikingly similar in pose to Ingres famous Le Grande Odalisque (1814), but Corot’s female is instead a rustic bacchante. In perhaps his last figure painting, ‘’Lady in Blue’’ (1874), Corot achieves an effect reminiscent of Degas, soft yet expressive. In all cases of his figure painting, the color is restrained and is remarkable for its strength and purity. Corot also executed many etchings and pencil sketches. Some of the sketches used a system of visual symbols—circles representing areas of light and squares representing shadow. He also experimented with the cliché-verre process—a hybrid of photography and engraving. Starting in the 1830’s, Corot also painted decorative panels and walls in the homes of friends, aided by his students. Corot summed up his approach to art around 1860, "I interpret with my art as much as with my eye." The works of Corot are housed in museums in France and the Netherlands, Britain and America."

Lg. Antique Print, Adorable Babies & Comical Birds on Tree Branch / Listed Artist: Charles Twelvetrees This is an adorable antique print featuring eight little babies perched on a tree branch. This picture was originally painted by the famous listed artist, Charles Twelvetrees (1888-1948). He became very well-known for his cartoon type figures, humor and whimsical illustrations of children and animals. This is one of his finest pieces. This is a large, bright, and colorful print with very sweet details throughout. The babies are so expressive, all busy doing things. Two babies are seen sneaking a kiss; one baby looks like he’s loosing his balance on the tree branch as a birdie comically pulls and unravels the thread from the poor little boys sock; beside him, a mature little baby girl seems to be intently knitting with a purse around her arm, next to her is a vain little baby looking at herself in a mirror as she pins a prickly rose in her hair; two more angelic, little rosy-cheeked babies, a girl and boy, are joyfully singing with sheet music in hand; and last but not least is the youngest and littlest musical baby seen playing a horn. Below the branch with the babies is another tree branch that features four sweet little birdies happily singing along, holding their own sheet music. Two more little birdies can be spotted sitting alongside ‘the kissing couple’, possibly kissing themselves. The pretty blossoming dogwood tree and the heavenly blue sky that surrounds them contributes to this enchanting and endearing piece. In the lower left corner of print reads, "Copyright Edward Gross Co., N.Y.". In the bottom right corner is the artist’s signature, "C. Twelvetrees". Original, decorative, gold-painted molded wood frame. The print and frame are both in excellent original condition. Original glass. Missing paper backing. New wire hanger. Circa 1920’s.

*** I’ve included some interesting information below about this well-known artist, FRANCES TIPTON HUNTER:

"Frances Tipton Hunter was an American magazine illustrator specializing in gently humorous and endearing genre pictures of children, in a style related to the Americana of Norman Rockwell. She was active from the 1920s to the late 1950s. Born in Pennsylvania, she was orphaned at age 6 and raised by relatives in Williamsport. As a young woman she studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and graduated from the Philadelphia Museum School of Industrial Arts. Later she became a member of the Society of Illustrators and the Artists Guild. Tipton illustrated for all the major magazines of the era and produced artwork for advertising, catalogs, calendars, greeting cards and posters. She drew paper dolls for Woman’s Home Companion in the 1920s and continued to make them at least into the 1940s; two collections were reissued by Dover Publications in 1988-89. She also produced covers for magazines such as Collier’s and Country Home as well as at least 18 covers for the Saturday Evening Post between 1936 and 1941. She published a children’s book, The Frances Tipton Hunter Picture Book, with verses and stories by Marjorie Barrows (1935). She left much of her artwork to the Lycoming County Historical Museum and the James V. Brown Library in Williamsport; according to the library’s web site ‘her original posters and advertisements are rare’."

The artist’s signature is in the lower right corner. The bottom left corner of print, reads, "G.P. 8124 Litho in U.S.A. Co.". Original, complimentary, decorative molded wood frame. The frame is also in excellent original condition, along with original glass and wire hanger. Circa 1920’s.

***I have included below, some interesting facts and information on this artist, Maud Tousey Fangel:

In the 1930s, '40s, and '50s -- if you saw a sketch or portrait of a child on the cover of Ladies Home Journal or Woman's Home Companion, or inside the magazines advertising, say, Colgate's Talc Powder, Cream of Wheat, or Squibb's Cod Liver Oil, you were probably seeing the work of Maud Tousey Fangel. For a good part of the first half of the twentieth century Ms. Fangel was the children's artist in our country -- her illustrations of ruddy-cheeked, doe-eyed, curly-locked children were everywhere. They set the standard for their day and made Ms. Fangel a kind of celebrity -- the subject of frequent feature articles and a much in demand children's portrait painter.

Maud Tousey was born on January 1st, 1881, the daughter of a Professor of Divinity at Tufts College. She began drawing in earnest when she was a teenager. After college, she was presented her portfolio to an art director of Good Housekeeping, Guy Fangel, who gave her her first commercial assignments and later proposed marriage to her. Their son, Lloyd, began Ms. Fangel's fascination with drawing babies -- she did more than 1500 pictures of him before he was three -- and later she would immortalize his face as the boy on the Cracker Jack box.

Many of Ms. Fangel's pictures were done in pastels, which allowed her to capture the movements of her young subjects in swift, impressionistic strokes. Most of Ms. Fangel's models were children from poor families, from orphanages, and settlement houses. Unaware of this, one newspaper referred to these children as "glamour babies." But Ms. Fangel understood the youngsters who sat and wiggled and dozed in the high chair for her a little more deeply than the correspondent: "I have a strange, persistent feeling that babies have a consciousness that we do not possess," she wrote. "They seem not yet to have lost an intelligence brought with them from another world. They are still wrapped in the mystery of their source."

Not only is this picture considered one of Maxfield Parrish’s finest works, but it’s quite significant in other ways as well. The book for which this picture was commissioned in 1904, titled, "Eugene Field’s Poems of Childhood", was the first in which Parrish’s work was reproduced in full color. This picture was also among the first of Parrish’s paintings to be made available as a color print. It is said that Parrish’s intention was to capture in this image "the spirit of the swing, just the catch in the turn of the motion". In other words, he surely captured the spirit of childhood.
